Spring 2007
The Nautilus

Dean's letter

Dear Alumni:

Stephen VogelAnother semester done—how time does fly! The last week of the term was particularly busy for alumni. Finals week included the Alumni Event on Thursday, followed on Friday by a "mock team room" assessment of student work in which the curriculum committee of the alumni participated, and finally, on Saturday, a Career Day for high school juniors completely organized by alumni. This latter event attracted 28 students and their parents from Ohio and Michigan. In the past, this event has led many students to enroll in the program.

The hard work on these programs was led by the president of the Alumni Council, Wayne Chubb '00. Sarah Belanger '02, was chair of the alumni event, Lonny Zimmerman '71, organized the alumni portion of the "mock team room", and Robert Brown '04, and Michael Ford '06, chaired the Career Day. Shanita Rutland '04, is the new chair of the graphics committee and created all of the wonderful graphics for these and other coming events. I know I am leaving out other people who worked hard to make these activities a success. Thanks to you all!

Finally, the NAAB Accreditation process for the School of Architecture takes place this new academic year (AY 2007-2008). We are busy writing the report now for submittal in the fall, and then the visit will be next spring. For the spring visit, we will again be mounting an alumni show and exhibit. Expect requests for digital examples of your work for this show and for a scheduled reception for the alumni.

I am also seeking an "observer" for the visiting team. The observer has to give up a Saturday afternoon through a Wednesday morning to work with the team. This is a considerable sacrifice in time, but is a very rewarding experience. Kathy Reehil '67, served as an observer for the last visit six years ago and was thrilled with the experience. Please let me know your interest.

We now have six endowed scholarships fully funded or pledged. Scholarship support is often the crucial difference in a student's ability to continue his or her course of study without interruption. If you, or your firm, are interested in creating a seventh, please let me know.

Have a good summer!

Sincerely,

Stephen Vogel, FAIA
Dean, School of Architecture
