CLAE faculty news

Faculty promotions/recognition

The following CLAE faculty members were promoted and/or granted tenure, effective beginning the 2012-2013 academic year.

  • Nancy Calley was promoted to professor of Counseling & Addiction Studies.
  • Mary Hannah, who retired in the past academic year as professor of Psychology, was named professor emerita. This title honors Hannah's 34-year academic career and contributions to UDM.
  • Mary Catherine Harrison, assistant professor of English, received the University's 2012 Agere ex Missione Award recognizes her considerable commitment to the UDM mission, both in role as a professor, but also in her personal life.
  • Hsiao-Lan Hu was granted tenure and promoted to associate professor of Religious Studies and Women's & Gender Studies.
  • Lorri MacDonald was granted tenure and promoted to associate professor of Education.
  • Sheri Pickover was granted tenure and promoted to associate professor of Counseling & Addiction Studies.
  • Tom Stanton was granted tenure and promoted to associate professor of Communication Studies.

Faculty research/scholarship and presentations

Libby Balter Blume, professor of Psychology and co-director of the Community Development program housed in the School of Architecture, facilitated a workshop for The Alley Project (TAP Gallery), entitled "Southwest Detroit: Art impacting a neighborhood," Aug. 18, during MicroFest Detroit, a national conference sponsored by the Network of Ensemble Theatres.

Rita Barrios, assistant professor of Computer and Information Systems, was appointed to the executive board of Michigan Council of Women in Technology as co-vice president of Partner Development. In this role, she will assist the organization in the development of partnerships with the information technology industry and academia.

Laurie Britt-Smith, assistant professor of English, and Allegra Pitera, assistant professor of Digital Media Studies, gave the presentation, "Digital composition across programs," at the Writing In Digital Environments conference, held at Michigan State University, Oct. 20.

Nancy Calley, associate professor of Counseling & Addiction Studies, wrote the article, "Juvenile offender recidivism:  An examination of risk factors," which was published last May in the Journal of Child Sexual Abuse.

Mark Choinski, scenic and lighting designer, has retired after 33 years with the UDM Theatre Company.

Barry Dauphin, associate professor of Psychology, along with Grant Heller, a recent graduate of the Ph.D. Clinical Psychology program, presented the poster, "Predictors of self-reported interfering video game use," at the American Psychological Association Convention in Orlando, Fla., Aug. 3.

Roy E. Finkenbine, interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Education, gave the lecture, "The causes of the Civil War," to the Adult Learning Institute (an affiliate of Elderhostel) at Oakland Community College on Sept. 19 in Farmington Hills, Mich. He was also featured in the AP article, "How did ex-slave's letter to master come to be?," published July 14.  Read the full article on the USA Today site.

John Freeman, professor of English, wrote the article, "At play in the cyber/fields of cultural production, or: How to be a stay-at-home mom and earn extra symbolic capital in your spare time," published in the journal CTheory, in October.  You can read the article on the CTheory website.

David Koukal, professor of Philosophy, presented his paper, "Being with the homeless," at the annual meeting of the Society for Phenomenology and the Human Sciences, Nov. 1 in Rochester, N.Y.

Douglas MacDonald, associate professor of Psychology, Christine Panyard, professor of Psychology, and Angela Lijewski, clinical psychology master's graduate, authored the paper, "Examination of the psychometric properties of the MMPI-2 Restructured Clinical Scales with a sample of public safety officer candidates," to be published in the International Journal of Educational and Psychological Assessment.

Judy McCown, associate professor of Psychology, and Holly Hale, a doctoral candidate, presented the poster, "Multidimensional social support experienced within World of Warcraft: Gender Differences," at the annual meeting of the Midwestern Psychological Association, May 3 in Chicago.

Isaiah McKinnon, associate professor of Education, was the keynote speaker for the 2012 conference of the Michigan Council for Human Resource Management in Novi, Mich., Oct. 9. His topic was "Leaders in a turbulent world." McKinnon also appeared on local ABC television affiliate WXYZ Channel 7 as well as on ABC national news Sept. 10 to speak about proper police procedures in barricaded gunman situations, like that following the murder of West Bloomfield Township Officer Patrick O'Rourke on Sept. 9.  Also, McKinnon appeared on WJR's The Warren Pierce Show Sept. 9 to discuss crime in the city of Detroit.

Cheryl Munday, associate professor of Psychology, presented the paper, "Self care, colleague support and career trajectory among women professional psychologists," at the annual meeting of the Association of Psychology Training Clinics, in San Diego last March. Munday also presented, with six national co-authors and UDM doctoral student Chislon Thomas, the poster, "Patient race, ethnicity, gender and reliability of self report in psychiatric diagnosis," at the annual meeting of the American Psychological Association in Orlando, Fla., Aug. 2.

Nicholas Rombes, professor of English, presented the paper, "Do Not Screen," at the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, held at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada on May 30.

Victoria Sepulveda, assistant professor of Counseling & Addiction Studies, co-wrote the article, "Salience, valence, context, and integration: Conceptualizing the needs of sexually and gender diverse youth in P-12 schools," which was recently accepted for publication in Journal of Homosexuality.

Greg Sumner, professor of History, presented his twelfth annual fall film and discussion series at the Rochester Hills Public Library, Tuesdays on Oct. 9 and 16, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.  This year's subject is "The Cuban Missile Crisis, 50 years later."

Carol Weisfeld, professor of Psychology, presented (with five international colleagues) a paper at the biennial Congress of the International Society for Human Ethology, Aug. 13 in Vienna, Austria. The talk was entitled "Using actor-partner interdependence models to examine the influence of attractiveness, financial status and children variables on marital satisfaction."

Kathleen Zimmerman-Oster, associate professor of Psychology—in her role as a director of UDM's Institute of Leadership and Service—was a featured speaker at the 2012 Greenleaf Servant Leadership Conference, held in Ann Arbor, Mich. in April (download presentation - PDF).
