Dean's letter

Dear CLAE Alumni and Friends,
I am delighted to send you this edition of Tapestry, our bi-annual electronic newsletter. It contains a variety of "good news." Several of our students and faculty have accomplished really "great things" this past semester. These include:
- Three CLAE students – Joslyn Flemons (Department of Education), Meagan Hanna (Department of Political Science), and Chuck Palermo (Department of Political Science) – were award winners for their presentations at the North American Model United Nations held in Toronto, Canada in February.
- China Sellers, a senior in Communications Studies, received the first place award from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters Foundation for her "radio feature" broadcast on UDM's 91.9 FM. The feature was based on China's one-on-one interview with Patricia Isasa, an Argentina torture survivor who spoke at UDM.
- Several journalism students are participating in an innovative program. They are working with online editors at The Detroit News preparing stories and posts about under-represented Detroit neighborhoods. Some of their work has already appeared online at www.detnews.com
- In February 2009, eight doctoral students in Clinical Psychology secured APA-accredited pre-doctoral internships for 2010-2011. They will be working at a number of sites across the United States including: Ohio Psychology Internship in Akron, Ohio, James A. Haley Veterans Hospital in Tampa, Florida, University Psychiatric Clinic in Detroit, Michigan, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Atascadero State Hospital in Atascadero, California.
- Joe Nolan, associate professor of Education, was an invited participant in the UNESCO Forum on Higher Education in Bucharest, Romania. The new Secretary of Education Arne Duncan was also an invited participant.
- Applications to the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program rose almost 20 percent from last year.
Please read through the stories in this issue of Tapestry and hear about many more great things that are going on with our students, faculty and alumni.
As always, thank you for your continued support of the College of Liberal Arts & Education. I, and our faculty, students, and staff, are most appreciative.
Charles E. Marske
Dean, College of Liberal Arts & Education
