Funds support scholarship

Three new scholarship funds have been established in CLAE:

  • Bob and Jamie Dylenski '98, in conjunction with AT&T, are funding a CLAE "Study Abroad" Scholarship fund in support of students attending a CLAE Summer Study Abroad Program.
  • Following the successful conclusion of funding the Neal Shine Media Center, friends and alumni of the Varsity News and the Communication Studies Department have established the Neal Shine Endowed Scholarship Fund for CLAE students who are Communication Studies majors and/or staff members of the Varsity News.
  • Drs. Barbara '02 and Ralph '99 Cushing graduates of the Master's Program in Religious Studies, have endowed the Cushing Distinguished Lecture Series in Religious Studies.

For more information on these funding initiatives, contact Development Director Jennifer Dafoe at 313-993-1429 or dafoejm@udmercy.edu.

UDM named Economic Education Center for Macomb

The National Council on Economic Education and the Michigan Council on Economic Education have designated the University of Detroit Mercy at Macomb University Center as a Center for Economic Education. UDM Economics Instructor Joseph Weglarz will serve as director of the UDM Center.

The goal of the University of Detroit Mercy Center for Economic Education is to promote economic literacy in the schools through teacher professional development while increasing the number of economic education programs from kindergarten through grade 12 as well as on the university and adult levels.

The UDM Center intends to achieve these goals by offering teacher training activities, providing consulting services, performing community outreach such as the on-going symposia series, conducting research, and developing and disseminating standards-focused curriculum materials to fit the needs and interests of individual communities.

Alumni share career advice with students

The 3rd annual Career Daze, held in February, provided students an opportunity to network with nearly 40 CLAE alumni from a broad range of professions.

Over lunch, provided by Alumni Council President Tom VanEsley '75, alumni responded to student questions about their careers, described their individual career paths, and offered career guidance. The event was sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts & Education Alumni Council.

Alumni enjoy theatre afterglows

The CLAE Alumni Council has hosted Alumni Afterglows following each of the four productions (The Glass Menagerie, Back of the Throat, And Neither Have I Wings to Fly, and The Play About the Baby) during the UDM Theatre Company 2007-2008 Season. The afterglows provided an opportunity for CLAE alumni to reconnect with old friends while supporting The Theatre Company.

The CLAE Alumni Council looks forward to continuing its sponsorship of alumni afterglows for the 2008-2009 theatre season. If you are planning an outing for a social or business group, consider attending a 2008-2009 Theatre Company production. Contact Alumni Relations for more information.

Counseling group goes to Lansing

On March 19, Associate Professor of Counseling & Addiction Studies Nancy Calley and UDM Counseling students participated in a day of legislative advocacy in Lansing.

The group (pictured below) met with more than 20 Michigan legislators to discuss the professional counseling issues of mental health parity and school counselor-to-student ratios. For the fifth consecutive year, UDM students comprised the largest participating group from any Michigan university or counseling organization.
