Dean's letter

Charles Marske

Dear CLAE Alumni and Friends,

It has been an exceptionally exciting and event-filled time for the students, faculty and staff of our College. Beyond the day-to-day rhythms of the College with classes, academic advising, committee meetings, and grades, there is a myriad of "extra curricular" activities continually taking place throughout the College.

The intellectual and social life of the College of Liberal Arts & Education is uniquely enriched by the scores of student organizations, publications, and special programs and events. Whether it is the English Department sponsoring a poetry writing contest, students in the Pre-Law Program presenting a mock trial, the Philosophy Department sponsoring the College Ethics Bowl competition, Political Science students fund raising so they can attend the model United Nations conference or perhaps students and faculty in the Department of Performing Arts (formerly the Department of Theatre) performing one of their major productions or smaller one-act productions or faculty, alumni, and students conversing after the recent Cushing Endowed Lecture on social ethics, there is a kaleidoscopic series of experiences unfolding day by day.

In addition a legion of practicums, internships, student teaching activities and other community-based programs, service-learning opportunities and volunteer activities are taking place each and every day, often in tandem with partner organizations throughout the region.

On campus, our two clinics — the Counseling Clinic and the Psychology Clinic — provide a range of professional services to clients, many of whom are in desperate need. A wide array of "auxiliary enterprises" are also an important part of CLAE, including the Dudley Randall Center for Print Culture, the University of Detroit Mercy Press, the student-run radio station (CST 102.3 FM) and student-run newspaper (Varsity News), the Black Abolitionist Archives and Carney Latin American Solidarity Archives. Each, in its own way, adds to the richness of the College.

As Dean of the College, I am grateful for the continued support of our alumni, for without your support many of the "great things" happening in our College could not continue. I thank you.
