Varsity News update

The Varsity News now has 21 student staff members, compared to only 10 last  year. This increase in staff is due in large part to the new Neal Shine Media Center, which is proving to be a great recruitment tool.

The Center was developed last year after a group of former VNers, including the late Neal Shine, gathered their financial resources and those of other alumni and the CLAE, to create the new facility.

The Center was Phase I of the project. The CLAE and this dedicated group of VN alumni are working diligently toward Phase II—stipends and scholarships for Varsity News staffers and Communication Studies students. If you would like to contribute to this effort, please contact Dean Charles Marske at 313-993-3250 or marskece@udmercy.edu.

Counseling Clinic receives first contract

The UDM Counseling Clinic, under the direction of Assistant Professor of Counseling/Addiction Studies Sheri Pickover, was awarded its first revenue-producing contract to provide mental health counseling services to Southfield Youth Assistance, who previously received no-cost counseling services from the Clinic.

Although the revenue will be used for technology and facility enhancements, the Clinic will remain focused on its mission of service, social justice and the academic preparation of graduate Counseling students, according to Associate Professor of Counseling/Addiction Studies Nancy Calley, director of Counseling Programs.

Located on the McNichols Campus, the UDM Counseling Clinic has provided no-cost mental health counseling services to the public for several years. Each year, approximately 300 children and adults, mostly from Detroit, come to the clinic for such help.

According to Calley, most of the clients have been ordered by the criminal justice system to receive mandatory counseling because of misdemeanor charges, but cannot pay for these services. The Clinic also provides outreach counseling to the homeless, working poor and impoverished senior population at St. Aloysius Outreach Center in downtown Detroit.

The primary objectives of the clinic are two-fold, says Calley:

  1. to live the service mission of the University and enact the social justice mission of the counseling profession by providing no-cost mental health counseling to individuals without the ability to pay nor access to such services, and
  2. to enhance the academic preparation of the graduate Counseling students by facilitating the practicum experience through a teaching clinic.

The Clinic was also recently recognized by Lahaska Press at the American Counseling Association annual convention as the recipient of the annual Lahaska Cares campaign and was awarded $500. The campaign recognizes counseling programs nationwide that reflect the value of social justice.
