Intelligence Analysis addresses security

In response to the 9/11 Commission Report issued last year, UDM created one of the first comprehensive academic programs, a Master of Science degree in Intelligence Analysis. The graduate program is interdisciplinary, teaching students how to determine threats, identify trends and quickly pass along informed judgments to decision-makers. Currently, 15 students are enrolled in the program.

UDM students will find employment opportunities in both the state and local law enforcement agencies, along with many corporations that must guard against disruptions at their facilities here and in other countries.  Assistant Professor of Sociology & Criminal Justice Erick Barnes, who spearheaded development of the program's curriculum, looks forward to continued growth of the program.

Advisory Board reaches out to Psychology alumni

The Psychology Chair's Advisory Board was formed last year to assist the department chair in an advisory capacity and to help with outreach efforts to graduate Psychology alumni as well as future fund-raising initiatives. The group held its first meeting in spring 2006, and in September, hosted a reception for about 70 Psychology Ph.D. alumni.

Currently, two Psychology Ph.D. students are assisting Psychology Chair Steven Abell in updating the department's database of Ph.D. alumni.  Advisory Board members, who are experienced psychologists from Southeastern Michigan, include:

  • Sharon Foster '88
  • Debbie Harms '80
  • Randy Harms
  • Paul Kaye '75, '76
  • Lynn Kuttenauer '86
  • Arthur Lewandowski
  • James Maher '84, '86, '89
  • John Porcerelli '87
  • Karen Colby Weiner '77, '86, '88
  • Walter Sobota '68, '73

Giving to UDM

Please include UDM in your year-end philanthropy plans.  The tax laws intentionally encourage charitable giving. Because of the income tax charitable deduction, individuals who make their gifts by December 31 and itemize can significantly reduce their income taxes for 2006.

Also, check with your financial advisor about new opportunities and tax benefits of transferring distributions directly from your IRA to make a contribution to UDM.  See the UDM giving site.
