Faculty news

The following College of Health Professions faculty members were promoted and/or granted tenure, effective August 2012.

  • Catherine Corrigan, promoted to Assistant Professor of Nursing
  • Rose-Marie Higgins, formerly Clinical Associate Professor, granted Associate Professor of Nursing in the tenure track
  • Katherine Marshall, promoted to Assistant Professor of Nursing
  • Kate Walters, Assistant Professor of Nursing, granted tenure

Associate Professor of Nursing Maureen Anthony received the 2011-2012 Med-Surg Nursing Clinical Scholarship/Best Practice Writer's Award at the annual convention of the Academy of Medical Surgical Nurses, in Salt Lake City, Utah, Oct. 6. In addition, Anthony with Marge Freundl, associate chief for Nursing Research and Education at the John Dingell Veterans Administration Medical Center and adjunct faculty in the McAuley School of Nursing, presented "Joining forces: Teaching nursing students to care for veterans" at the National League for Nursing annual summit in Anaheim, Calif., Sept. 21.

NA Clinical Associate Professor Greg Bozimowski is scheduled to complete his DNP in 2013. He also serves as chair of two committees of the Michigan Association of Nurse Anesthetists, Wellness and Publications.

Assistant Professor of Nursing Rosanne Burson and Assistant Professor of Nursing Kathy Moran delivered the presentation, “A patient-centered medical home (PCMH) care delivery innovation that improves outcomes,” at the National DNP Meeting in St. Louis, Mo, and the presentation, “A cost-effective PCMH care delivery innovation that improves outcomes,” at the GVSU Interprofessional Collaboration Conference in September. In conjunction with Dianne Conrad, they also spoke on “DNP scholarship: Influence and impact.” In addition, their book, The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Project: A Framework for Success, will be published in January 2013.  

Nurse Anesthetist (NA) Program Chair Michael Dosch was elected to the board of the Michigan Association of Nurse Anesthetists. He also made presentations on the “New preanesthesia checklist” and “New ventilation modes” in San Francisco, Charleston, S.C. and Grand Rapids, Mich. He published his dissertation on computer-based testing in the August AANA Journal.

Professor of Nursing Carla Groh and Clinical Assistant Professor of Nursing Andrea Kwasky wrote the article, "Vitamin D and depression: Is there a relationship in young women?" published in the July 2012 edition of the Journal of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association. In addition, Groh and former Professor of Nursing Joan Urbancic were recently named the 2012 Alpha Sigma Nu Book Awards winners in the category of health sciences for the book, Women’s Mental Health: A Clinical Guide for Primary Care Providers.

NA Assistant Program Director Petra Hurt visited other CRNA programs as an on-site reviewer for the Council on Accreditation and serves on a variety of CHP committees.

Professor of Nursing Molly McClelland co-authored the article, “Metaphors of the Adult Asthma Experience in a Suburban Area,” in the Journal of Asthma and Allergy Educators. She also co-authored the following articles and presentations with Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering Daniel Kleinke:  “Innovative educational collaboration between colleges to improve disabilities and enhance learning” in the Michigan Academician; “Teaching innovation using multidisciplinary collaboration” at the Proceedings of the National Collegiate Inventors & Innovators Alliance 16th Annual Conference; and “Teaching innovation and assistance to university students using a unique multidisciplinary collaborative approach,” at the Proceedings of the International Conference of Education, Research and Innovation, 2011 annual conference. In addition, McClelland's article, “IV therapies for patients with fluid and electrolyte imbalances,” will be published in MedSurg Matters, Nov./Dec. 2013 issue.

Physician Assistant (PA) Professors Sharon Moser and Amy Derezynk’s original research on “Predicting professionalism by personality attributes” was published in The Journal of Physician Assistant Education. Moser also gave two presentations on hyperbaric medicine and bipolar disorder at the state PA CME conference in October.

College of Health Professions Dean Christine Pacini co-chaired the statewide Task Force on Nursing Practice, convened by the director of the Michigan Department of Community Health.

Assistant Professor of Nursing Thelma Phillips presented the poster, "The experience of weight retention among postpartum African American adolescents," at the annual conference of the Midwest Nursing Research Society, April 13 in Dearborn, Mich.

Assistant Professor of Health Services Administration Mia Platt authored the article, “The current state of health economics education in nursing programs in the United States,” in the Academy of Health Care Management Journal. Platt also gave the presentation, "Promoting active learning in online classes," at the AUPHA Undergraduate Workshop in Birmingham, Ala; and co-presented “The current state of health economics education in nursing programs in the United States,” at the Beaumont Health System Corporate Nursing Research Day: “Growing Your Research” in Troy, Mich.; the poster presentation received the Best Poster Award in the Beaumont Professional Practice Model category of VISION at the research event. In addition, Platt created supplemental resources (test bank and PowerPoint lecture slides) for Thomas Getzen’s textbook, Health Economics and Financing.

Mitzi M. Saunders, associate professor of Nursing and coordinator of the Clinical Nurse Specialist online program, gave the educational presentation, "Role of the adult-gerontology clinical nurse specialist," to hospital administrators and the Advanced Practice Nurse Council membership at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, Mich., Sept. 20.

Nurse Anesthetist Clinical Coordinator Andrea Teitel serves the Michigan Association of Nurse Anesthetists as Federal Political Director for 2012 and is Government Relations Committee Chair this coming year.

On an ongoing basis, College of Health Professions faculty, students and alumni provide service and volunteerism to community-based organizations throughout the city of Detroit, inclusive of health screenings/physical exams, food and clothing drives, and outreach to underserved populations.
