Nurse Practitioner fulfills career aspirations at McAuley Health Center

When Tracy Threat literally bumped into a banner that read, "Try Nursing," she knew it meant more than just clumsiness on her part. Based on that encounter and her inner desire to be more than a biology research assistant, Threat (pronounced Threet) earned a BSN. Years later, while she was working toward her master's in nursing at UDM, another "aha" moment occurred.

"I was fulfilling my clinicals in fall 2008 at the McAuley Health Center and realized that I was there for a reason," says Threat. "Serving this community and being at the Center fit like a glove."

She continued working at the Center as the office registered nurse. In this position, she gained more knowledge, confidence and experience. It also solidified her desire to remain there. Upon passing the board exams in July 2008, the inevitable happened. Threat was asked to join the staff as one of its three nurse practitioners.

According to Tracey Chan, the Center's clinic coordinator and nurse practitioner, Threat's integrity, honesty and caring personality make her an ideal employee. Her knowledge and ability to click with patients helps, too.

"She takes wonderful care of her patients. She provides complete holistic care of her patients," says Chan. "Tracy upholds the Center's mission for compassion."

The nurse-managed Center operates in an underserved community on Detroit's east side in the Samaritan Center at Conner and Shoemaker Streets. Its three nurse practitioners develop a strong connection to the patients as they strive to offer them comprehensive care and keep them out of the hospital emergency rooms.

"I grew up wanting to be some kind of provider," says Threat. "I feel with my heart and soul that this is the job I was meant to do. It is a blessing."
