Health Services Administration Program

Mary O'Shaughnessey, Chair

Revision of Master of Health Services curriculum

The Health Services Administration faculty and staff are proceeding with updating and revising the Master of Health Services curriculum to meet the growing demands of healthcare. Students who enroll in the master's program in Fall 2008 and beyond will follow the new curriculum that includes courses in health care marketing and population health. Students who enrolled before Fall 2008 have the option to follow the new curriculum or continue with the previous course offerings. These changes are part of the ongoing effort to achieve accreditation status through the Commission on Healthcare Management Education.

Survey for recent master's degree graduates

Alumni who graduated with a master's degree within the previous four years will receive a letter about a new online survey. The survey includes questions about their experiences in the master's program and their current employment.  The letter will include a URL that alumni can use to easily access the survey. All alumni are encouraged to complete and return the survey as soon as possible. Information from the survey is an important component of the accreditation process and will be used to guide future improvements in the program.

Articulation agreement with WCCC

This past fall, a new articulation agreement was implemented between the Wayne County Community College District and the UDM undergraduate HSA program. The Agreement allows eligible undergraduate students who have completed an associate's degree or are near completion to enroll directly into the HSA program. Students who have taken advantage of this new opportunity report that they are very pleased with the Health Services Administration program.

Internship requirement

A requirement for all Health Services Administration undergraduate students is that they must complete an internship requirement. The majority of the graduate students also select to complete an internship as part of their academic plan. The internships provide students with an opportunity to apply the knowledge they have learned in the classroom to a real world situation. As students complete their academic studies, they begin to consider employment opportunities and take advantage of the opportunities that the internships provide. Recently some of the undergraduate students were offered employment at the internship sites because of the skills, knowledge and work ethic they demonstrated. They were very pleased to have these opportunities and to secure positions within the field of healthcare administration.

Graduate certificates

The HSA Program now offers two graduate certificates in Health Services Administration:

  • Certificate in Health Services Administration for post-baccalaureate students
  • Certificate in Health Services Administration for post-baccalaureate business students

These graduate certificates provide the extra edge needed in today's competitive job market. Strong business management skills combined with knowledge of the health care industry create a skills set in high demand. Courses for the HSA graduate certificates begin in September, January and May, with many offered online. You may begin the program any term and can usually complete the certificate within a year. The certificate credits may also be applied toward completing a master's degree in Health Services Administration.
