Associate Professor of Nursing Maureen Anthony wrote two recently published articles: "Relationships among nurse staffing, nurse adherence to practice guidelines and patient outcomes in the treatment of hypoglycemia" in the Fall 2008 issue of Quality Management in Health Care and "Health needs of migrant farm workers" in the Sept. 2008 Journal of Community Health Nursing.
Anthony also received the 2008 MedSurg Nursing Clinical Scholarship/Best Practice Award at the Oct. 5 MedSurg Nursing: The Journal of Adult Health annual Writer's Awards in Nashville, Tenn. Anthony won for her article, "Hypoglycemia in Hospitalized Adults," which appeared in the journal's February 2008 issue.
Associate Professor of Nursing Janet Baiardi is a co-investigator for the study, "Engaging the community in health care research: creating a community academic partnership," which will receive $25,000 in funding from the Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research and the Michigan Center for Health Intervention.
Nursing Instructor Shari Bertolone gave the presentation, "Needs of pediatric neuroscience patients," to the Advanced Neuroscience Nurses Conference, Aug. 20.
Greg Bozimowski, clinical assistant professor of Nurse Anesthesiology, received IRB approval and has begun data collection on his project, "Patient perceptions of pain management: a comparison of real-time assessment of patient education and satisfaction and registered nurse perceptions." Bozimowski also gave the presentation, "Professionalism among nurse anesthetists," at the spring meeting of the Michigan Association of Nurse Anesthetists in May.
Clinical Track Assistant Professor of Nursing Karen Burritt gave the presentation, "When stroke strikes," at the Innovations in Neurosciences Conference at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, May 30. Burritt also gave two presentations at the Advanced Neuroscience Nurses Conference, Aug. 20 in Grand Rapids, "Care of brain tumor patients" and "Care of patients with cerebrovascular diseases."
Assistant Professor of Nursing Sandra Cleveland, Nursing Instructor Thelma Philips and College of Health Professions Simulation Practice and Technology Integration Center Coordinator Suzanne Guzelaydin gave the presentation, "Towards a new way of instructor training: avatar-guided online orientation for nursing and health professions adjunct faculty" at the NEP-TIP conference in August at Duke University.
Colleen Connolly, executive assistant to the Dean of the College of Health Professions, became an Associate of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, Regional Community of Detroit (now the West Midwest Community), in a ceremony at Mercy Center in Farmington Hills, June 20. Mercy Associates are women and men who enter into a covenant with the Sisters of Mercy to participate in the life of the Mercy Community. Read more about the Sisters of Mercy at UDM.
Associate Professor of Nurse Anesthesiology Mike Dosch has been awarded a 2008 Doctoral Fellowship in the amount of $10,000 from the AANA Foundation. Also, Dosch is co-author of two articles, "Time to a 90% change in inhaled gas concentration: A comparison of three semi-closed anesthesia breathing circuits," to be published in Anesthesia and Analgesia, and "Attrition rate in the nurse anesthesia graduating class of 2005," published in the Journal of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.
Professor of Nursing Carla Groh and former Nursing professor Joan Urbancic are co-authors of the book, Women's Mental Health: A Clinical Guide for Primary Care Practitioners, recently published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. Contributors to the book include Associate Professor of Nursing Janet Baiardi and Associate Professors of Physician Assistant Sharon Moser and Suzanne York.
Dean of the College of Health Professions Suzanne Mellon has been selected as the 2008 recipient of the Sy Gottlieb Award for Outstanding Leadership in Health Care by the Greater Detroit Area Health Council (GDAHC). Mellon was recognized for her commitment and contributions to GDAHC as well as the health care profession during the GDAHC Annual Business Meeting, Sept. 22, at Plum Hollow Country Club in Southfield.
Associate Professor of Nursing Judith Mouch presented the pre-conference workshop, "And the greatest of these is: Advocacy," Sept. 12 at the 22nd annual Westberg Symposium, in St. Louis, Mo. The symposium is sponsored by the International Parish Nurse Resource Center.
Assistant Professor of Health Services/Health Services Administration Mary O'Shaughnessey authored the chapter, "Individual behavior and motivation," which was published in Health Organizations Theory, Behavior and Development by Jones and Bartlett.
Pat Rouen, assistant professor of Nursing, has been appointed to the Research Affairs Committee of the North American Menopause Society.
Associate Professor Mitzi Saunders' manuscript, "Family caregiver support and hospitalizations in patients with heart failure," has been accepted for publication in the December issue of Home Healthcare Nurse.
Nutrena Tate, assistant professor of Nursing, co-authored the article, "Trust of nurse practitioners and physicians among African Americans with hypertension," which was published in the May 2008 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.
Tricia Thomas, assistant professor of Nursing, gave the presentation, "Delivery models and reimbursement: can evidence override history?," at the Evidence-Based Practices conference, in June. In July, Thomas gave the presentation, "Contemporary issues affecting nursing today: IOM reports, nursing education, practice, and regulation," to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.
