Maureen Anthony, associate professor of Nursing, authored the article, "Hypoglycemia in hospitalized adults," in the January/February issue of MEDSURG Nursing.

Nursing Clinical Track Instructor Karen Burritt gave a patient safety presentation at the 2007 Trinity Fall Conference, in Chicago. The presentation was titled "Evidence-based strategies for decreasing falls with injury in inpatient settings."

Associate Professor of Nursing Carla Groh and Professor Emeritus of Nursing Joan Urbancic were recently awarded a grant from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation. The grant, titled "Evaluation of Health Life-Style Change Program for Obese Underserved African American Women: An Integration of Exercise, Nutrition and Spirituality," will include evaluation of the program's long-term effectiveness.

Associate Professor of Nurse Anesthesiology Michael P. Dosch is co-author with two recent alumni of the article, "Attrition in the Nurse Anesthesia class of 2005: A program director's survey," which will be published this summer in AANA Journal, the international student journal of nurse anesthesia.

Walid Harb, medical director of the Physician Assistant Program, was selected as one of "The Best Doctors In America." The selection is based on a nationwide survey of physician peers.

Dean of the College of Health Professions Suzanne Mellon presented two papers at the 39th biennial Convention of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Nov. 2-7 in Baltimore, MD: "Attitudes, Beliefs, and Access for Hereditary Breast Cancer Risk Assessment in a Low-Income Arab-American Community," and "Families at Risk for Inherited Breast/Ovarian Cancer: The Use of the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model Analysis." She also authored the manuscript, "Risk perception and cancer worries in families at increased risk of familial breast/ovarian cancer," to be published in Psycho-Oncology.

Approximately 70 posters were presented at the Second Annual UDM Faculty and Student Research Symposium and Poster Fair, April 15. Awards were presented to the best poster from each college/school. The posters were judged on the basis of scholarship and presentation. The College of Health Professions award was presented to Associate Professor of Nursing Mitzi Saunders for "Comparison of Employed and Non-employed Caregivers of Heart Failure Patients on Caregiver Outcomes."

Saunders also has had her article, "Factors associated with caregiver burden in heart failure family caregivers," accepted for publication in the Western Journal of Nursing Research.

Julia Stocker-Schneider, assistant professor of Nursing, is primary author of the article, "Evaluating home health care nursing outcomes with OASIS and NOC," published recently in Journal of Nursing Scholarship.

An article by Assistant Professor of Nursing Patricia Thomas, "Case Manager Role Definitions: Do They Make an Organizational Impact?" was accepted for publication in the spring 2008 issue of Professional Case Management Journal.

Thomas also gave the following presentations: "Mentoring New Faculty: Mentor and Mentee Share Key Questions for First Faculty Interviews," at the Convention of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Nov. 2-7 in Baltimore, MD;"Building a Great Team: Learning How to Communicate and Interact Effectively with Your Medical Team," at the third annual Hope, Health and Healing conference, Oct. 7 in Southfield; "Lessons Learned on the Magnet Journey," at the Registered Nurses Association in Michigan (RN-AIM) regional meeting, Oct. 17; and the poster presentation, "Managing Hospital Length of Stay: Are our Assumptions Accurate?" at the state-wide RN-AIM conference, in October, which won a "Best Use of Resources" award.

Assistant Professor of Nursing Kate Walters successfully defended her dissertation, "An Investigation of the Cognitive Processes that Contribute to Faculty Development among Selected Nursing educators in Michigan."
