The article, "Cancer Patients' and Caregivers' Perceptions of Control over Pain," by Assistant Professors of Nursing Maureen Anthony and Mitzi Saunders, was accepted for publication in Journal of Pain Management Nursing.
Nursing Professors Janet Baiardi, Carla Groh and Pat Rouen presented "Model Development for the Role of Faculty Mentorship in Graduate NP Role Transition" at the Celebrating Nursing Excellence Conference at the University of Windsor in October. In April, they presented "Using the Real World Experience of Role Transition to Refine Nurse Practitioner Curriculum" at the annual meeting of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties in Denver. Rouen also had a poster presentation at this conference entitled "Metabolic Challenges of Menopause: Effects on Adipokines & Insulin Resistance."
Associate Professor of Nurse Anesthesia and Program Chair Mike Dosch, who is in his second year of full-time doctoral study in Education, is currently revising his chapter on the anesthesia machine for the 4th edition of Nurse Anesthesia. Dosch also serves as an on-site reviewer for the Council on Accreditation and submits questions for the Nurse Anesthesia certifying exam. He recently completed a two-year appointment to the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists Task Force on Doctoral Education.
Associate Professor of Nursing Carla Groh co-authored the article, "The relationship between spirituality, purpose in life, and well-being in HIV-positive persons," to be published in the Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care.
Nursing Instructor Kristine Herrington and Associate Professor of Nursing Linda Thiel, O.P., presented, "Instilling Integrity: Honor Codes and Plagiarism," as part of the Aquinas Lecture Series at Aquinas College, Grand Rapids.
The Journal of Physician Assistant Education will publish the research article, "Service Learning as a Component of Physician Assistant Education: The Development of a Compassionate Practitioner," by Assistant Professors of the Physician Assistant department Debra Knight and Sharon Moser, and Associate Professor of Nursing Carla Groh. Moser also had an article submitted to the AAPA's Paragon Publishing Awards competition by the Editorial Coordinator of the Journal of the American Academy of Physician Assistants.
Assistant Professor of Nursing Joette Lambert presented her dissertation research, "Exploring the Life of Young Black Women with HIV: The Intersection of Race, Gender, Class, and Age," at the Midwest Nursing Research Society conference in Omaha, as well as at the annual meeting of the Society for Adolescent Medicine in Denver. Lambert was also elected chair of the Disciplinary Subcommittee of the Marriage and Family Therapy Board, a statewide board to which Lambert was appointed by Governor Jennifer Granholm last year.
Suzanne Mellon, dean of the College of Health Professions, is the principal investigator of a recent award from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation for a community project in collaboration with Karmanos Cancer Institute and ACCESS entitled, "Hereditary Breast Cancer: Increasing Awareness and Reducing Barriers of Access to Breast Cancer Assessment in the Low Income Arab-American Community." Mellon also co-authored two articles: "A family-based model to predict fear of recurrence for cancer survivors and their caregivers," in Psycho-Oncology, and "Concerns and recommendations regarding inherited cancer risk: the perspectives of survivors and female relatives," in Journal of Cancer Education.
In March, she also presented the paper, "Predictors of Decision Making for Cancer Risk Information in Survivors and Female Relatives at Risk for Inherited Breast/Ovarian Cancer," and the poster, "Communicating About Cancer Risk in High Risk Families: A Comparison Between Breast and Ovarian Cancer Survivors and Their Female Relatives," at the ninth National Conference on Cancer Nursing Research in Hollywood, Calif.
Todd Ray, assistant professor of Health Services Administration, was elected chair of the Faculty Forum on Distance Education at the annual meeting of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA).
Assistant Professor of Nursing Shirley Sherrick-Escamilla successfully defended her dissertation entitled, "Factors Affecting Self-Reported Physical Activity in Children Ages 10-12," and presented a poster on the topic at Midwest Nursing Research Society conference.
McAuley School of Nursing assistant professors Julia Stocker Schneider and Mitzi Saunders presented their respective posters, "NIC Interventions in Cardiac Home Healthcare" and "Influence of Heart Failure Caregiving on Caregiver Burden, Caregiver Health-Related Quality of Life and Patient Hospitalizations," at the 2007 annual research conference of the Midwest Nursing Research Society as part of the Heart Failure Poster Discussion Forum.
The American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on the Magnet Recognition Program® has selected Assistant Professor of Nursing Patricia Thomas to be a program appraiser for a two-year term.
