Dasgupta
Associate Professor of Mathematics & Computer Science Abhijit Dasgupta received UDM's 2010 Faculty Achievement Award. He was recognized for his outstanding teaching, student mentoring and community services. Since joining UDM in 2004, Dasgupta has taught 18 different course preparations in 12 terms, covering all areas of mathematics at all levels. In addition, he often uses new methodology, such as the Moore method, in his classes and has guided student research. Dasgupta's scholarship spans widely across many classical areas, including mathematical logic, descriptive set theory, measure and probability theory, real and functional analysis, topology, non-standard analysis, algorithmic information theory, and the philosophy of randomness. He is widely published in scholarly journals with his most recent contribution in the prestigious Handbook of the Philosophy of Science, which was reviewed in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. His service contributions extend from the departmental, college and University level to the global community.
The following UDM faculty members were promoted or granted tenure, effective Aug. 16:
- Alan Hoback was promoted to professor of Civil Engineering
- Mostafa Mehrabi, associate professor of Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering, was granted tenure
At the annual meeting of the Botanical Society of America, Associate Professor of Biology Stokes S. Baker organized the symposium, "Broader impacts: Connecting education with basic research," presented two refereed papers, ran a workshop on digital imaging technology, and became the chair of the teaching section, July 31 - Aug. 4 in Providence, R.I.
E&S Dean Leo Hanifin, E&S Associate Dean for Research & Outreach Shuvra Das and Dean of Engineering Core Competency for Ford Motor Company Sean Newell presented a paper on innovative collaboration for curriculum development at the SAE Convergence 2010 conference, Oct. 19-20 in Detroit. Chemistry Storeroom Manager Meghan Murray accepted an award for Outstanding Local Section Younger Chemists Committee, on behalf of the Detroit committee, during the 12th annual ChemLuminary Awards at the American Chemical Society national meeting, Aug. 24 in Boston. In November, Murray also helped develop an exhibit of vintage chemistry sets and equipment, set on display in UDM's McNichols Campus Library with the help of Library Technician Maurice Greenia.
Engineering Professors Mark Schumack and Alexa Rihana-Abdallah and Chemistry/Biochemistry Associate Professor Prasad Venugopal received a summer stipend from the UDM Jesuit Associates to develop a new course on "Energy and Society" that will help advance the Catholic mission of UDM.
