UDM inspires area youth in engineering and science
Pre-College programs serve over 5,000
Nearly 5,400 youths participated in UDM Pre-College programs from September 2008 – August 2009. About 62 percent of the total were underrepresented minorities and included 50 percent females. The largest number of students (2,550) participated in the Ford-UDM Partnership for Advance Studies, which provides life and career skills within business and manufacturing activities. In addition, 1,278 students participated in the DAPCEP programs to interest students in engineering, math, computer science and the sciences. Technology Discovery Day excites future innovators
Approximately 800 future scientists and engineers from 23 high schools throughout metro Detroit attended the 19th annual Technology Discovery Day hosted by the University of Detroit Mercy, Oct. 23 on the McNichols Campus.
The event provides students the opportunity to learn and to generate stronger interest in engineering and science curriculum by proving to them that science is more fun than "most of us think." Students participated in such competitions as the Egg Drop, Rube Goldberg, Straw Tower and Toothpick Bridge, to expand and challenge their minds in the fields of science and engineering.
Other activities included a Jeopardy competition and the annual Chemistry Magic Show, sponsored by the students and faculty of the University's Chemistry Club, as well as displays from local companies and departments. The event was sponsored by BASF and DENSO.
