Executive in Residence: Paul R. Shefferly '75

Paul R. Shefferly '75, has joined the UDM College of Engineering & Science as Executive in Residence In this capacity, Shefferly will lead the faculty of the College in developing new and expanding collaborations with industry and government partners.

Such collaboration may include joint research and development projects, education and training programs, and technology transfer activities.  His initial focus will be on the areas of innovation methods and Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII).

Shefferly was most recently the director of Vehicle Build and Electrical/Electronic Laboratories at Chrysler LLC, having spent 33-1/2 years with the company. His other positions included director of the Truck Program Management, and director of Truck Vehicle Development when the Ram Heavy Duty won the 2003 Motor Trend Truck of the Year.

Shefferly received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Detroit and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Michigan.  He is a longtime and active member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and the UDM Engineering & Science Advisory Council. Golf course

Annual golf outing tees off July 14

UDM's College of Engineering & Science invites all golf enthusiasts to participate in its fifth annual E&S Golf Outing to be held on Monday, July 14 at Shenandoah Golf Club in West Bloomfield.

The fund-raising event, which is supported by corporate sponsors and donations, will support E&S student scholarships and organizations. The event includes 18 holes of golf, use of a golf cart and range balls, two golf contests, plus awards, prizes, raffle and a live auction. Sponsorship opportunities, ranging from $250 to $1,000, are still available.

Cost to play is $125 each ($500/foursome) and includes a continental breakfast at 7:30 a.m. with a 9 a.m. start time and open bar from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. A steak dinner at 3 p.m. concludes the event. You do not need a foursome to play and may make a contribution if you cannot attend. Payment (major credit cards are accepted) is required with your reservations by June 27.

Graduate management programs develop leaders

Program registration is currently under way for the Master of Product Development and Master of Engineering Management programs, as well as for Six Sigma Green Belt and Black Belt certification. These programs provide the necessary technical and business skills for management leadership positions.

The programs are taught by faculty with academic and industry experience. Industry executives also serve as co-teachers or guest speakers. During this past year, guest speakers included Ford CEO Alan Mulally, Kelly Services Board Chairman Terence E. Adderly and General Motors Executive Hideki Isetani.

E&S to hold pre-college summer camps

The College of Engineering & Science will host two summer camps for high school students this year:

  • STEPS (pictured below) is a one-week residential camp for girls currently in the 9th or 10th grade, covering robotics, manufacturing, engineering, programming, math and science. STEPS camps will run June 15-20 and June 22-27. See the STEPS web page.
  • TRANSIT is a one-week commuter program exploring the world of transportation. It is open to any high school student currently in the 9th through 11th grades. TRANSIT will run July 21-25. The registration deadline is June 13.
