UDM hosts executive speakers
On Monday, Nov. 19, Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson ’61, ’67, will speak on the topic, “Oakland County Economic and Technology Development.” The presentation will begin at 4 p.m. in the Engineering Building, Room 237.
Patterson’s talk is part of a fall series hosted by UDM’s Product Development Program for UDM students, faculty and guests to hear executives speak on engineering and business-related topics. Following each presentation, students and guests have the opportunity to talk with the individual speakers during a reception.
Previous speakers this fall included:
- On Oct. 11, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Kelly Services, Inc., Terence E. "Terry" Adderley, spoke on "Kelly Services and the Market for Engineering Talent." Joining Adderley for the presentation was David R. Hay, senior director for Government Affairs and Teresa Carroll, VP & general manager, Kelly Engineering Resources.
- On Sept. 27, GM's Executive Director, Global Engineering Processes of North America, Hideki Isetani discussed "The Globalization of General Motors Engineering."
- On Sept. 17, President and CEO of SKF USA Inc. and President of SKF Automotive Division-North America George Dettloff presented a lecture on "Automotive Engineering in a Structurally Changing Industry."

Freshmen initiate tablet computer, software program
Approximately 70 engineering and science students are utilizing the College’s recommended tablet computer and software for their studies this fall term.
According to E&S Dean Leo Hanifin, the tablet computer and designated software package will ensure that students have the necessary tools to coincide with current engineering or science methods and faculty teaching techniques.
"We feel it is important for students to integrate advanced computing into their learning so they can reach their goals in becoming the best engineer, scientist or medical professional," adds Hanifin.
Technology Discovery Day excites future scientists and engineers

Girls work on a Rube Goldbergian contraption in Calihan Hall
Over 700 future scientists and engineers from 18 high schools throughout metro Detroit attended the 17th annual Technology Discovery Day hosted by the University of Detroit Mercy, Oct. 26 on the McNichols Campus.
The event provides students the opportunity to learn and to generate stronger interest in engineering and science curriculum by proving to them that science is more fun than "most of us think." Students participated in such competitions as the Egg Drop, Rube Goldberg, Straw Tower and Toothpick Bridge, to expand and challenge their minds in the fields of science and engineering.
Other activities included the annual Chemistry Magic Show, sponsored by the students and faculty of the University's Chemistry Club, as well as displays from local companies and departments. The event was sponsored by Chrysler Corporation, Ford Motor Company, BASF, DENSO and Continental.
Golfing event scores another success
Approximately 70 golfers participated in the fourth annual E&S Golf Outing held July 16 at Shenandoah Golf Club in West Bloomfield. The event, supported by corporate sponsors, raised over $13,000 to assist UDM College of Engineering & Science student scholarships and organizations.
Congratulations to the winning foursome: John Ciulis, Dan Ciulis, Mike Harman and Bill Darin.
Next summer's Golf Outing is scheduled for Monday, July 14 and will be held at Shenandoah Golf Club. To reserve a spot, arrange sponsorship, make a contribution or for more information, call 313-993-1218.

UDM’s Chemistry Club received an ”Outstanding” rating by the American Chemical Society for the third year in a row. This honor is bestowed on 30 or fewer of the 900 chem clubs in the nation. The UDM Chem Club was also designated a “Green Chemistry” chapter for 2006-2007. Only 10 clubs receive this citation annually.
UDM hosts graph theory scholars
The 45th MIGHTY — MIdwestern GrapH TheorY — Conference was held Oct. 6 with the plenary Harary Lecture, "Failures," given by Marc Lipman, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. The conference, which included 13 additional presentations, was created to foster the development of graph theory research. UDM presenters included Mathematics Instructor Scott Anderson and Associate Professor Jeffery Boats, who organized the conference with Assistant Professor Lazaros Kikas.
