UDM team places third in international competition
UDM's Electrical & Computer Engineering team of nine students, three faculty members and their robot were awarded third place overall at the 14th Annual Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition (IGVC) in June. The competition includes a design competition, navigation challenge, and autonomous challenge.
Forty-one teams from 30 universities representing the U.S., Canada, India and Japan competed at this year's IGVC at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison Township, Mich. UDM's team, "THOR," took home third place overall, behind Virginia Tech's "Gemini" and "Johnny 5" teams.
The IGVC is an annual international competition created to offer cutting-edge design experience to engineering students. In the specific challenges, UDM's team placed fourth in the autonomous challenge and third in the navigation challenge out of 41 teams. UDM also received the "First to Qualify" award at the competition.
"The skills and experience that our students gained from preparing for the IGVC will help set them apart from others when they enter the workforce," says Nizar Al-Holou, professor and chair of Electrical & Computer Engineering at UDM.
