Become part of a winner
Within the current economic environment and surrounded by a city with major challenges, people often ask how the University is doing. In short, the University is doing well. In fact, we can say we are thriving.
How can we make this claim? Let's start with the numbers. The University's full-time undergraduate enrollments are even with last year, equal to our best in over 20 years. We continue a streak that began seven years ago. The College of Business Administration has seen the same trends in full time undergraduate enrollments. The MBA enrollments are up 14 percent, year-over-year. And we've done this without compromising student quality.
Tuition growth and close attention to costs have contributed to the second streak of importance, that the University showed an operating surplus for the sixth year in a row. There are few others, especially locally, who can point to this dual success.
In this way, the University has been able to invest in facilities and improve the overall student experience. Come to campus and experience the changes. Just a hint, stop in the renovated Commerce & Finance Building, drive the new "ring road" around campus or visit the Tennis Complex. If you haven't been here in a few years, you'll be impressed.
On this strong base, your giving is an opportunity to strengthen the College and University. The world will not stand still so the faculty still need to develop their skills. Research requires continuing support to advance new knowledge. And, very importantly, scholarships need your support so deserving students can get the help they need to develop their talents.
You may recall receiving materials for our "Support our Scholars" program to fund the continuing needs of deserving students. We need to attract new students and help existing students finish their degrees. With threatened cuts in State grant programs and the poor performance of investments, your support of our students is more critical than usual. Today's students are very much like when you were here; many are first or second generation college students who are achieving success from a demanding environment. Like you, they need help that our alumni can provide.
So think about including the College or University in your giving plans and invest in a winner. The University of Detroit Mercy and the College of Business Administration are making a difference to a growing number of students in a city that will benefit from our talents. Help by becoming a part of this success.
