The sixth edition of Interim Dean Gerald Cavanagh, S.J.'s book, American Business Values: A Global Perspective, has just been published by Prentice-Hall. New in this edition are subjects such as balancing work and family, money and status as goals, hedge fund and private equity pay, threats to democracy, how firms lose customer trust, plus new case studies on Hewlett-Packard, PepsiCo, Facebook, ExxonMobil, Whole Foods, and cell phones.
In November 2008, Marketing Professor Michael Bernacchi appeared on WJBK-TV FOX 2's show, Let It Rip, to discuss the first attempt by leaders of the Big Three auto manufacturers to ask Congress for billions of dollars in loans. In February, Bernacchi, with the support of Oakland Schools' Paul Galbenski, hosted hundreds of metro Detroit high school students for the 2009 Ad Nauseum event. Students evaluated ads from the 2009 Super Bowl as part of the "America's Marketing High School™" program.
Alumni
INSIDE Public Accounting, an independent newsletter for the accounting industry, named Bill Hermann '72 one of 2009's Top Five Most Admired Peers. Hermann has served as CPA and managing partner at Plante & Moran for eight years, leading the way to growth and broadened service capabilities.
James O'Sullivan '76, '86, president and CEO of Mazda North American Operations, was named 2009 Automotive Executive of the Year by the Automotive Industry Action Group. The award, which has been given out since 1964, celebrates "individuals who demonstrate great leadership and tireless dedication to the innovation and creative thinking needed to succeed in this industry."
Students
The Financial Executives International bestowed professional honors on senior Trina Kochanski and Ann Morgan '99, '09, at the Annual FEI Recognition held in March. The honor recognizes outstanding work in Accounting and/or Finance at the undergraduate and graduate levels of study.
Senior Matthew Parker was named CBA's 2009 Co-Op Student of the Year by the UDM Career Education Center for his commitment and willingness to build a connection from classroom theory to workplace learning, demonstrated leadership abilities, and willingness to learn new skills.
Other top CBA students were recognized for their accomplishments at the Honors Convocation and the Honor Society Induction.
Fu Jen University students from the fourth cohort of the Global Entrepreneurial Master of Business Administration program studied at UDM for two weeks and participated in the Commencement ceremony on May 9.
