Business Turnaround Management program expands
As the number of businesses in distress grows, so does University of Detroit Mercy's unique Business Turnaround Management (BTM) program. As of fall 2008, there will be three options at UDM for those who wish to study BTM, the latest addition being a Master of Science in BTM degree. The Master's degree consists of a total of 30 credits and requires in-depth focus on the unique skills needed to make troubled companies run smoothly.
The College had previously instituted two other BTM options, which remain available to students:
- MBA students can select a concentration in BTM with three elective courses.
- Undergraduate students can become certified in BTM by taking five specific courses; MBA students can add the certification by taking two additional BTM courses.
All three options seek a holistic and systemic solution to business turnarounds, thus uniquely training students to exercise leadership in rescuing and restructuring ailing businesses and non-profit institutions. Through its capstone course, "Ethics of Business Turnaround Management", the program empowers students with the ethics of both rescue and restructuring skills management.
Other course topics the program covers include:
- Business Strategy
- Crisis Cash Management
- Forensic Accounting
- Bankruptcy Law
- Motivation and Negotiation
- Lean Manufacturing/Design
- Aggressive Marketing
- Systems Thinking
- Aliances, Mergers, and Acquisitions
- Corporate Restructuring
- Information Technology
In addition, students in any of the three programs may elect to complete a field project with major turnaround companies in Michigan.
Professionals from both industry and academe teach BTM courses so that both theory and practice are represented, allowing students to benefit from a wide range of perspectives on leading a business out of crisis.
