UDM Hosts Engineering and Science Camps This Summer

University of Detroit Mercy’s College of Engineering & Science is offering a series of camps this summer aimed at students currently in grades 4 through 12. These programs will allow participants to explore science, technology, engineering and math through the most current methods of innovation with fun, hands-on and engaging activities in a college setting. The following camps are available:

STEPS (Science Technology Engineering Preview Summer Camp for Girls)
Who: Girls in grades 9 - 12
Date: June 23 - July 3, 2014
Time: 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Cost: $200 per week
This two-week all-girls camp will introduce students to the exciting world of engineering, science and robotics. Participants will gain an understanding of manufacturing techniques, circuits and sensors as they build and program robots.

STAR Summer Program
Who: Students in grades 7 - 9
Date: July 7 - 25, 2014
Time: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Cost: $135 per week
Program participants will learn about engineering, science, programming and math using two different types of robotic platforms: LEGO NXT Mindstorms and the VEX Robotics System. They will also build, design and program robots while taking part in a competition on the last day.

UNITE: ACT Prep and College Boot Camp Summer Program
Who: Students in grades 10 - 12
Date: July 7 - 25, 2014
Time: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Cost: $230 per week ($50 non-refundable registration fee due upon acceptance; cost includes camp, supplies and lunch.)
Designed for high school students, the three-week camp will resemble a university freshman engineering curriculum, exposing students to the world of engineering and science. The Boot Camp will assist students in test taking skills, structure and study goals, and build the tools and skills necessary to succeed in a university setting.

World In Motion: Jet Toy Challenge
Who: 5th graders
Date: July 14 - 25, 2014
Time: 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Cost: $200 per week ($50 non-refundable registration fee due upon acceptance; cost includes camp, supplies, and lunch.)
Students will form a fictional toy company and work together to provide a variety of interesting designs for a new line of balloon-powered vehicles made from inexpensive, common materials. After testing their creations, students will give a formal presentation to the judges.

World In Motion: Fuel Cell Challenge
Who: 6th graders Date: July 14 - 25, 2014
Time: 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Cost: $200 per week
This hands-on experience will let students explore concepts of motion, force, inertia, velocity and air drag in a team setting. Groups will compete in the designing and building of their cars, then give a formal presentation to the judges at the end of the week.

Math Works: Online Algebra & Fundamentals
Who: 6th graders
Date: July 14 - 25, 2014
Time: 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Cost: $200 per week
Participants in this interactive course will learn math-solving quick tips for how to add, subtract, multiply and divide integers. The two-week program will introduce students to the skills necessary to succeed as a college student, as well as fundamentals of basic math, pre-algebra and geometry.

World In Motion: Push Racer Challenge
Who: 4th graders
Date: July 14 - 25, 2014
Time: 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Cost: $200 per week
Students will become the lead engineer of their own racecar design and must complete all the obstacles to finish the race. The two-week long camp will teach participants how to design, build and analyze data.

TRANSIT, Smart Moves Summer Program
Who: 9th- 12th graders
Date: July 14 - 25, 2014
Time: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Cost: Free
This free camp for high school students currently in grades 9 - 12 introduces participants to the world of transportation and various transit systems around the globe. Students will build and program transportation systems while gaining an understanding of manufacturing techniques and control systems. (Program generously funded by Mineta National Transit Research Consortium.)
