Growing up is hard to do, especially for the parents! ... The UDM Theatre Company presents "Memory House"
The heartwarming comedic drama Memory House will complete The Theatre Company’s 43rd season at the University of Detroit Mercy. Directed by David Regal, this moving account of a daughter, a mother, a paper and a pie is an emotionally charged story of learning and letting go. Kathleen Tolan’s Memory House will run six performances, March 28 through April 6, at the intimate 90 seat setting of the Grounds Coffeehaus on the UDM McNichols campus. Tickets are available by calling 313-‐993-‐3270.
Memory House, by Kathleen Tolan, is a dramatic blend of the ingredients that make up the parent/child relationship. Katia, played by Theatre Company newcomer Ashé Lewis (Westland, MI), is a teenage daughter on the cusp of adulthood who is struggling with writing her college entrance essay. As the three-hour deadline looms, she is searching for an elusive context in writing her ‘memory house’. Questioning the choices of her parents and the details of her heritage, Katia prods her adoptive mother, Maggie, played by Equity Guest Artist Stephanie Nichols (Troy, MI), for answers. Maggie is spending the evening baking her first pie, a therapeutic exercise to ease the pain of her divorce from Katia’s father.
Memory House deftly captures that poignant moment when a mother realizes her life’s work is coming to an end, along with the maturing of a daughter’s understanding of her parents, as they both come face to face with the inevitability of growing up.
The New York Times calls Memory House “a captivating emotional ballet that is also a moving demonstration of the strenuous work that goes into good mothering.”
The production team includes Director David Regal (Ferndale, MI), Stage Manager Greg Ettleman (Grosse Pointe, MI), Scenic and Costume Designer Melinda Pacha (Royal Oak, MI), Lighting Designer and Technical Director Rudy Schupebach (Detroit, MI), and Director of Marketing and Management Greg Grobis (Detroit, MI).
