UDM 2013 Commencement Ceremony honors Jane K. Nugent '48

University of Detroit Mercy held its annual commencement ceremony for undergraduate and graduate students on Saturday, May 11, at 1:30 p.m. in Calihan Hall on the McNichols Campus. UDM School of Law held commencements on Friday, May 10, 5:00 p.m. and UDM School of Dentistry held commencements on Friday, May 10 at 9:30 a.m. The Law and Dental ceremonies were also at Calihan Hall on the McNichols campus.

At the annual commencement, the University honored the valedictorian Kaitlyn Rose Avery, a business major. Ms. Avery has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors throughout her academic career, including the Rev. Gerald Cavanagh, S.J. Scholarship for service learning.

The keynote speaker for this year's commencement ceremony was Jane K. Nugent. Mrs. Nugent received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from UDM at the 2013 Commencement.  A pioneer among female executives, Mrs. Nugent is a member of the College of Business Administration Hall of Honor and the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame. 

Nugent received her B.S. in personnel management from the University of Detroit Mercy. She rose to being one of the highest-ranking women in the Metro Detroit corporate world while making it her priority to serve her community. Nugent participated in the nation's first management development program for women held at Cornell University. She has presented a similar program in major cities throughout the United States. Nugent has received degrees from the University of Detroit, an MBA from the University of Michigan, and an MA from Wayne State University in Personnel Psychology, as well as professional certification as a certified Administrative Manager and Accredited Executive Personnel.

During her professional career, Nugent is most recognized for breaking the glass ceiling during her role as Vice President of Administration at Detroit Edison from 1982-90, one of the top electric utility companies in the nation. Nugent was responsible for overseeing the Department of General Purchasing, Information Systems, Business Services, Security, Buildings and Properties, Food Service, General Facilities Administration, and Real Estate and Rights of Way. Nugent also made history being the first woman vice president of the Economic Club of Detroit.
