Pamela Zarkowski appointed Provost and VP of Academic Affairs

Pamela Zarkowski, J.D., M.P.H., has been named Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Detroit Mercy, effective immediately.

In this combined executive position, Zarkowski is the chief academic officer of the University and responsible for the administration of all academic departments and programs, and a member of the UDM President's Cabinet.

As a faculty member in the University’s School of Dentistry since 1978, she attained the rank of professor in 1994. She was appointed Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs in 2007 and was officially appointed Vice President of Academic Affairs in 2008. Prior to that position, Zarkowski was Executive Associate Dean of UDM's School of Dentistry from 2002-2007. She was also chairperson or director of three departments (1988-1997), associate dean for admissions and community relations (1992-1997) and associate dean for academic administration (1997-2002).

In the UDM School of Dentistry, she has continued to teach community dentistry and legal and ethical concepts to pre-doctoral, dental hygiene and graduate students. She has also conducted continuing dental education courses and published in the areas of community oral health and legal and ethical issues for dental professionals.

Zarkowski is former president of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and American Society for Dental Ethics (ASDE); former chairperson of the ADEA/Gies Foundation; and past president for the Society for Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (SELAM). She is also a faculty contributor to the annual ADEA Leadership Institute and Allied Leadership Institute programs and a senior consultant for the Academy for Academic Leadership.

She received her Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene and a Master of Public Health in Dental Public Health and Teaching Certificate in Community Dentistry from University of Michigan. She earned a Juris Doctor from Wayne State University School of Law, where she served as an editor for the Wayne Law Review.
