University to host White House Young America Town Hall Meeting
On Tuesday, May 22, 2012 from 9 a.m. -1 p.m., University of Detroit Mercy will host one of 17 White House youth “town hall” style meetings being held on college campuses across the nation. The UDM event will be held in the Student Center, Fountain Lounge on the McNichols Campus. The White House Young America series was established by the Obama Administration for young Americans to come together to discuss topics important to their generation.
UDM was chosen to host this Michigan event not only for their commitment in providing students with a quality higher education but for the University's promotion of social justice, their leadership role in the community and the compassion that exists to help persons in need. UDM students, staff and alumni aim to take an active role in strengthening Detroit through community outreach and partnership with like-minded organizations on projects such as this one.
The Detroit event is being sponsored by UDM’s Institution for Leadership and Service and the White House Office of Public Engagement in conjunction with the Millennium Momentum Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, D.C. The program will feature conversations from Detroit-area students that are making a difference, student-facilitated small panel discussions and a Q & A session.
The White House has confirmed that its designee to attend the event will be Victoria McCullough of the White House Office of Public Engagement (OPE). Prior to joining OPE, Victoria worked for Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs Team at the Department of Homeland Security and the 2008 Obama campaign. Victoria graduated from Rhodes College and hails from Lewisburg, Tennessee, where she first learned a passion for community service. Also present will be Jason Seward of the Millennium Momentum Foundation and Samuel Ryan of the U.S. Department of Education.
The event is free of charge, but pre-event registration is required because space is limited. For more information, please contact Colleen Moore at firstname.lastname@example.org or 313-993-1047. To RSVP, please visit http://www.udmercy.edu/youngamerica/.
