UDM Theatre: Autobahn rides shotgun through five intimate journeys
Closing the UDM Theatre Company’s 41st season is a collaborative production of Detroit native Neil LaBute’s Autobahn. Partnering with University of Detroit Mercy’s Architecture program and the Digital Media Design program, the Theatre Company’s production of Autobahn will be performed in the Warren Loranger Exhibition Space in the Loranger Architecture building on the campus of the University of Detroit Mercy (4001 W Mc Nichols Detroit, MI 28221). With limited seating capacity of 124 seats, Autobahn will be directed by David L. Regal and Andrew Huff and will run six performances; March 23, 24, 25, 30, 31 and April 1, 2012.
Autobahn is a play cycle made up of a collection of intensely personal conversations that take place within the confines of a vehicle. The intimate exchanges presented in Autobahn are portrayed from a “front seat” point of view, which travels through topics of addiction, adultery, paranoia and more. Full of rich, compelling and sometimes uncomfortable dialogue, this play offers a glimpse into what may be the last of our private frontiers; the sanctity of our own cars.
Autobahn’s ‘Bench Seat’ features UDM students Michelle Renaud and Chris Jakob as a young couple in a discussion about the future of their relationship. ‘Funny’ looks at the anything but funny subject of rehab and addiction, played by UDM student Charky Mushat and associate guest artist Karen Minard. UDM Student Autumn Thiellesen and associate guest artist Ron Hilliard trek across country under disturbing circumstances in ‘Road Trip’. ‘Merge’ features associate guest artist Karen Minard and associate guest artist Brak Little as a husband who picks up his wife from a business trip that defies explanation. In the story ‘Autobahn’, associate guest artist Crystal Brock frets over loss and disappointment while associate guest artist Brak Little drives the pair home.
Playwright Neil Labute was born in Detroit and raised in Spokane, Washington. He studied at Brigham Young University and was honored as one of the “most promising undergraduate playwrights” at the BYU theater department’s annual awards. LaBute also did graduate work at the University of Kansas, New York University, and the Royal Academy of London. His writing career has included work for both film and stage, most notably the film ‘In the Company of Men’ which won the Sundance Filmmaker’s trophy and his play ‘reasons to be pretty,’ which was nominated for three 2009 Tony Awards, including Best Play.
