10-24-theatre-anatomy-graytrue1349900180215palmerscUDM Theatre Company presents the Michigan premiere of "Anatomy of Gray"Theatre Company presents "Anatomy of Gray"/www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2011/files/10-24-theatre-anatomy-graywhitenjg1319468766598palmersc1328561605355The UDM Theatre Company proudly announces the second production of their 41st season, Anatomy of Gray.  Written by Jim Leonard, co-founder of the Bloomington Playwrights project and author of The Theatre Company's 2003 production of The Diviners, Anatomy of Gray will run for six performances, November 4, 5, 6, 11, 12 and 13 at the Marygrove Theatre (8425 W McNichols Rd, Detroit 48221). Filled with homespun innocence and vernacular, this is a story of hope, death and healing, which explores acceptance, rejection, and the making of hard choices.

Anatomy of Gray explores themes of survival, both spiritual and physical, in the rural town of Gray, Indiana in the late 1800's. Galen Gray, played by professional guest artist Brian Thibault, is a mysterious healer who is literally blown into town and is seen as the answer to the prayers of young June Muldoon, played by student Michelle Renaud. The townspeople of Gray look to this stranger for deliverance from the mysterious illness which plagues their community, only to find that "everything good for you has a price." Directed by Dr. Arthur J. Beer with music direction by Greg Grobis, Anatomy of Gray will run for six performances at the Marygrove Theatre: November 4, 5, 6 and 11, 12, 13, 2011.

Anatomy of Gray features numerous associate guest artists including Actors' Equity Association member Mary Bremer Beer (Warren, MI) as Tiny Wingfield and non-equity professionals Brian Thibault (Whitemore Lake, MI) as Galen Gary, Susan Reno (Brimingham, MI) as Rebekah Muldoon, Dax Anderson (Hamtramck, MI) as Pastor Phineas Wingfielfd, David Bokas (Southfield, MI) as Crutch Collins and Joanne Roth-Bokas (Southfield, MI) as Belva Collins.  Also featured are students Michelle Renuad (Troy, MI) as June Muldoon, Chris Jakob (Detroit, MI) as Homer and Char'Ravia Mushatt (Detroit, MI) as Maggie.  Townspeople include student Tim Shumack (Detroit, MI) and Johnice Littlejohn (Detroit, MI) and Bryan Spangler (Detroit, MI) as guest artists.   Directed by Dr. Arthur J. Beer (Warren, MI), the production team is rounded out by stage manager Matthew Lira (Toledo, OH), costume and scenic designer Melinda Pacha (Royal Oak, MI), lighting designer Mark Choinski (Dearborn, MI) and music director, management and marketing director Greg Grobis (Detroit, MI).

The Theatre Company at University of Detroit Mercy continues its mission of providing the Metro Detroit community with thoughtful, high-quality and professional productions.  The Theatre Company offers students of the Performing Arts Department the rare opportunity to work on and off stage with theatre professionals.  Annually, the Theatre Company spends 30% of its overall budget on professional associate guest artists and directors.   By working with professional directors and associate guest artists, students are encouraged to work at a high level, producing rapid growth throughout their undergraduate education.  For more information on becoming a student or an associate guest artist, please contact Greg Grobis at 313-993-3273.

Anatomy of Gray opens on November 4 and runs through November 13, 2011.  The Theatre Company's performances are held on Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. at the Marygrove Theatre on the campus of Marygrove College, 8425 W. McNichols Rd.  Adult admission is $18.  Student admission is $9.  Group tickets are available for parties of 10 or more at $13 per ticket for adults and $7 for students.  Please note a $3.00 service fee per order for non-subscribers.  No service fees will be charged to students.

The Carney Latin American Solidarity Archive at University of Detroit Mercy will host an art exhibit from Central America in the McNichols Campus Library, Jan. 12-31.

The exhibit showcases the work of Donald Voelker, a former processing archivist who currently resides in Costa Rica. His art focuses on current life in both Central and South America. Proceeds from this exhibit will be used to renovate the Centro Arte para la Paz, an alternative school that fosters a culture of peace in El Salvador, founded by Sr. Peggy O’Neill, SC.

A reception for the opening of the exhibit will be held on Wednesday, January 12 from 4 – 6 p.m. in the library. At the opening reception, Patrick Dengate, a Ferndale artist and close friend of Voelker will speak on his behalf. Light refreshments will be served.

Centro Arte para la Paz was a school operated by the Dominican Sisters of the Annunciation, who were forced to abandon the school due to the civil war in El Salvador. Currently, it is open for programs to build unity in the community, teach self-sufficiency skills and gender equality, as well as cultural awareness.

There will also be a closing event for this exhibit on Sunday, January 30 from 1-3 p.m. featuring Deacon Don Leach, pastoral associate at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Plymouth, who works closely with Sr. Peggy O’Neill and a sister community project in El Salvador; he will be available for questions and more information on the Centro Arte para la Paz. Light refreshments will be served.

01-12-healthtrue1349900180215palmerscCollege of Health Professions offers Health Information Management program/www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2011/files/01-12-healthpalmersc1294848284494palmersc1328561592112

Beginning this term, the University of Detroit Mercy College of Health Professions now offers a unique new degree program, a Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management.

UDM’s College of Health Professions and Computer and Information Systems department in the College of Liberal Arts & Education have collaborated to create the new degree. HIM students will learn health care data, health services organization and delivery, healthcare statistics and applied health informatics. They will also have access to the Cerner AES electronic health record system, which is used in health care facilities, to provide hands-on experience for students.

To ensure a one-of-a-kind, quality degree program, the colleges worked closely, developing the program in conjunction with American Health Information Management Association guidelines.

Graduates of the Health Information Management program can work in hospitals, consulting firms, colleges and universities, rehabilitation centers and many other sites. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has estimated careers for HIM professionals to grow at an extremely faster pace than many other job areas.

Assistant Professor Julia Stocker-Schneider, one of the program’s creators, says, “Currently, most HIM roles are being filled by people who have the IT skills but not necessarily the health care knowledge…so there really is an unmet need for specialists who have knowledge in IT and can apply it to health care.”

For more information, contact the College of Health Professions at 313-993-1208 or visit http://healthprofessions.udmercy.edu.

01-13-campustrue1349900180215palmerscUDM Participates in National Campus Kitchens Program/www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2011/files/01-13-campuspalmersc1294947982501palmersc1328561555815

After a year-long feasibility process, University of Detroit Mercy has been awarded a three-year grant to coordinate the Campus Kitchen at UDM Program from its McNichols Campus. Campus Kitchens is a national student-run program that promotes anti-hunger programs in communities near designated colleges. Student volunteers prepare meals and deliver them to food centers for distribution. The Campus Kitchen at UDM is the first college program in the state of Michigan.

The idea for Campus Kitchen at UDM came from Sodexo Retail Manager Kari Haddrill, and Sodexo continues to provide critical support for the program. Sodexo’s on-campus operation, which provides the food services for the UDM campuses, has helped the Campus Kitchen at UDM by providing kitchen space, volunteering staff hours, preparing meals, donating leftover food from the dining hall and helping obtain other food donations. UDM’s University Ministry, Dining Services, Student Life and the Institute for Leadership & Service collaborated to make UDM’s program possible.

UDM will kick off its program on Jan 28-29, 2011 with a collection of non-perishable items that were donated at the Loft and Café a la Cart located on the McNichols Campus. Approximately two dozen student volunteers will prepare and deliver collected donations to those in need in the surrounding neighborhood. Unused food from the UDM dining hall will also be donated to the Campus Kitchen at UDM. The main goal of the program is to connect students with the community and raise hunger awareness.

Community partners working with UDM are St. Gregory’s Parish, Peggy’s Place-COTS (Coalition on Temporary Shelter), and Martin Park, Fitzgerald and Pilgrim Village neighborhood associations in northwest Detroit. The Walmart Foundation has also provided funding.

“The program is in keeping with the University’s mission of being a student-centered program,” University Minister Drew Peters commented. Student responsibilities include planning a menu, cooking, organizing drivers and completing paperwork. The program will allow students to build leadership and team building skills.

“The program will be run by the students and the outreach is to the local community, which reflects the mission of reaching out in an urban context,” Peters said. UDM encourages its students to engage in service and the immediate community around the University.

The Campus Kitchen at UDM is a part of the nation Campus Kitchens Project whose goal is to provide food to those in need by utilizing student volunteers and connecting them to surrounding communities. As of January, 28 schools, both colleges and high schools, are participating in the program. Since 2001, more than 25,000 student Campus Kitchens volunteers have donated more than one million meals to their communities.

“The Campus Kitchen at UDM is another great pairing of willing and able students and a community in need,” said Mike Curtain, CEO of DC Central Kitchen, the parent organization of CKP. “The Campus Kitchens Project is using food to strengthen bodies, empower minds and build communities while developing the next generation of philanthropic entrepreneurs.”

The partnerships between the student participants and communities in need should be beneficial to both by providing students with leadership experience and teaching them the importance of helping the local community. This mission is consistent with UDM’s, which exists to provide excellent, student-centered, undergraduate and graduate education in an urban context. A UDM education seeks to integrate the intellectual, spiritual, ethical, and social development of its students.

01-21-theatretrue1349900180215palmerscArt imitates life as UDM Theatre Company Presents "A Life In the Theatre"/www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2011/files/01-21-theatrepalmersc1295620653861palmersc1328561559875

The theatre stage door opens to reveal unfeigned life in the UDM Theatre Company’s three-weekend run of David Mamet’s A Life in the Theatre. Running February 5 through 20, 2011 at the Marygrove Theatre (8425 W. McNichols Rd Detroit, MI 48221), A Life in the Theatre highlights the relationship of two thespians at opposite ends of their career.

A Life in the Theatre depicts the core principle of the UDM Theatre Company by focusing on a young actor (Joel Frazee) who grows through the guided mentorship of a theatre professional (David L Regal). The play illustrates the rite-of-passage that John experiences as his mentor, Robert emphasizes the discipline needed to maintain a career in the theatre. While each actor comes to realize his destiny of the theatre, friendships are challenged by the drama on and off stage.

A Life in the Theatre premiered at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago in February 1977 with Mike Nussbaum and Joe Mantegna. The play was revived on Broadway in 2010 starring Patrick Stewart and T.R. Knight.

Inspired by his real life experiences, David Mamet wrote A Life in the Theatre in 1974. One of American’s valued playwrights, Mamet won the Pulitzer Prize, New York Drama Critics Circle Award and a Tony nomination for Glengarry Glen Ross (1984). Mamet also is a two-time Academy Award nominee for The Verdict and Wag the Dog and Tony Award nominee for Speed-the-Plow (1988.) He is a founding member of New York’s Atlantic Theatre Company.

A Life in the Theatre is directed by Dr. Arthur J Beer (Warren, MI) and features David L Regal (Detroit, MI) as Robert , and Joel Frazee (Bluffton, OH) as John. 02-03-marketingtrue1349900180215palmersc25th Annual Super Bowl Ad Nauseum is Another Success/www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2011/files/02-03-marketingpalmersc1296763507255palmersc1328561556042

On Monday, Feb 7, University of Detroit Mercy marketing professor Michael Bernacchi hosted the 25th annual Super Bowl Ad Nauseum for over 250 high school students. At the event, students discussed their favorite TV commercials and why they thought they were effective.

Bernacchi teaches a variety of marketing classes at UDM, and is co-founder of the web site, "America's Marketing High School," found at americasmarketinghighschool.org, with Paul Galbenski of Oakland County Schools and Immersive Engineering. Both Bernacchi and Galbenski developed marketing and advertising course work related to the Super Bowl for high school teachers to use throughout the nation, which can be found on the web site.

A community service project was added to the Ad Nauseum discussion this year. The University asked every teacher and student in attendance to "Tackle Hunger" by bringing 2-4 cans to the McNichols Campus event. The collected items will be donated to Kids Against Hunger and distributed throughout Metro Detroit.

This year, students from Oakland Schools Technical Campus, Avondale High School, Hamtramck High School, Southfield Lathrup High School and Waterford Mott High School attended the event. Those schools who are unable to attend were still be able to view the Super Bowl lecture on the program's web site and vote for the most effective ad spots.

UDM also offers competitive scholarships to prospective students pursuing their undergraduate degree in marketing or related fields. The America's Marketing High School Scholarship is worth up to $1,500 per year.

Pizza, pop, and snacks were donated by Pizza Papalis (of Southfield). The event was open to all UDM students, faculty and staff as well as all interested high school marketing and business classes.

03-04-asbtrue1349900180215palmerscStudents Spend Spring Break Working and Helping Others02-28-reuss/www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2011/files/03-04-asbpalmersc1299266619715palmersc1328561598438During the week of March 5-12, 55 members of the University of Detroit Mercy community will travel around the country to help the less fortunate during this year's Alternative Spring Break (ASB). ASB offers participants an opportunity to see the world in a different light by helping with various service projects.

Participation in ASB gives individuals a chance for direct service, combined with reflection on how ASB can make a difference in the lives of others, along with their own lives. ASB participants exemplify the  Jesuit education goal, being "men and women for others" and the Mercy tradition of "compassionate service to those in need."

UDM's ASB 2011 will travel to seven different cities, and will post messages to the Alternative Sprint Break blog each evening:

  • Detroit: Two faculty members and four UDM students have a busy week exploring many of our cities most difficult issues including hunger, homelessness and social justice. Within one week, Detroit ASB participants will work and visit twelve different agencies in need. Volunteers will be working at the SHAR House (Self Health Addiction Rehabilitation), Detroit Evolution, Gleaners Food Bank, Manna Meals, a Detroit-area soup kitchen, Catherine Ferguson Academy for Young Women, the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network and the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries.   A group of Loyola University Chicago students will also be working with their Detroit Jesuit-counterparts at several of the agencies.
  • Salem, W.Va.: Seven UDM students will be working with Nazareth Farm in Doddridge County, repairing damaged homes in the rural community while exploring aspects of community, faith, service and simplicity.
  • Mt. Pleasant, S.C.: Seven UDM students will be repairing homes as part of the United Methodist Relief Services on home repair in rural South Carolina.
  • El Paso, Texas: Nine UDM students will work with Casa Puente, a living space for immersion groups and short-term volunteers for peace. Participants will experience and better understand the complex nature of the border and reality of immigration in North America.
  • Los Angeles: Nine UDM students will be working the St. Francis Center in downtown Los Angeles, an agency offering services for low-income families and homeless residents. The group will learn about the issues of urban life for youth and families.
  • Sacramento, Calif.: Ten UDM students will spend the week feeding the hungry at the Loaves and Fishes shelter and learning about advocacy.
  • Chicago:  Seven UDM students will be working at the SuCasa shelter, assisting Spanish speaking families in a predominatly African American neighborhood on the south side of Chicago. The volunteers will also be learning about immigration and community.

This is the first year, UDM’s University Ministry has added the Detroit location to the ASB program, as students volunteer on local projects throughout the year as part of the University’s mission.  Because UDM is an urban university, it is important to promote the city of Detroit whenever possible, David Nantais, director of the department explained. "Detroit is a city rich with ethnic and racial diversity, a multi-faceted history and tens of thousands of committed citizens working to change things for the better. It is very inspiring and we believe our students should see these aspects as often as possible. Many college students don’t know Detroit really well, and the Detroit ASB trip can help open them up to the community,” he added.

For more information about ASB, go to the UDM Minsitry web site or contact the office at 313-993-1560.

04-04-vogeltrue1349900180215palmerscUDM's School of Architecture Dean to Step Down From Position To Teach and Consult02-28-reuss/www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2011/files/04-04-vogelpalmersc1301929884643palmersc1328561608028University of Detroit Mercy's School of Architecture Dean Stephen Vogel has decided to step down from his position, effective May 15, 2011, to focus on full-time teaching and consulting in UDM's School of Architecture, following a one-year sabbatical. Vogel came to UDM in 1993 from the architecture firm of Schervish Vogel Merz, PC, where he was a founding principal. His projects at this firm included multi-family housing, adaptive re-use, historic preservation, urban design and master planning and large scale, mixed-income communities.

During his time as dean, Vogel focused on the School of Architecture’s mission to educate future architects with a commitment to build sustainable communities and to provide service to the community. Under his leadership, the School was also named as one of only six architecture schools in the country recognized for social justice in Design Intelligence magazine. In 1993, he co-founded the Detroit Collaborative Design Center to offer University-based design services to non-profit civic and community organizations, which became a model for design centers in the U.S. and has received national and international recognition.

Additional accomplishments during his time as dean include raising more than $10 million in individual and firm donations and foundation grants, raising funds and heading up the renovation for the majority of the Warren Loranger Architecture Building, initiating the development of the Master of Community Development degree and reorganization of the Digital Media Studies degree, increasing enrollment to its highest levels in the School’s history and increasing student ACT scores by 3 points, as well as many other achievements.

Vogel has also been recognized nationally for his expertise in urban design—he has given many presentations and published extensively on the topic. University of Detroit Mercy held its annual Commencement ceremony for undergraduate and graduate students on Saturday, May 14 in Calihan Hall on the McNichols Campus. UDM School of Law held its Commencement on Friday, May 13, and UDM School of Dentistry held its Commencement on Sunday, May 15. Both the Law and Dental ceremonies were held at Calihan Hall on the McNichols Campus.

At the annual undergraduate/graduate Commencement, the University honored David C. Stone, an attorney and chairperson of Bodman's Business Practice Group with an honorary degree. Stone’s law practice concentrates mainly on corporate law and estate planning. He received his B.S. from Michigan State University in 1970 and his J.D. from Detroit College of Law in 1976. Stone is a member of the Detroit Historical Society and the John Hannah Society of Michigan State University, and is an emeritus member of the Board of Visitors of Duke University Divinity School. He is also a strong advocate for the City of Detroit, non-profit groups, higher education, and has been a benefactor of UDM.

The keynote speaker for this year's Commencement ceremony was Reverend Richard Malloy, S.J., vice president of University Ministries at University of Scranton. Malloy has worked at multiple universities as director of campus ministry, as a professor of anthropology and sociology, and as a Jesuit faculty in residence. Malloy is a 1976 graduate from St. Louis University with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. He received a Ph.D. from Temple University in cultural anthropology, and a master's of divinity and S.T.L. from Weston Jesuit School of Theology.

Faye Nelson, an alumna of Mercy College of Detroit ’75 and University of Detroit School of Law ’80, was the keynote speaker for the School of Law Commencement. She is the president & CEO of the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, which was responsible for building an eight-mile River Walk from the Ambassador Bridge to the Belle Isle Bridge. Prior to that position, she was a corporate attorney and director of Government Affairs for Kmart Corporation and vice president of Government Affairs at Wayne State University.

The keynote speaker for the School of Dentistry Commencement was former Detroit Lion Lem Barney. Barney was named to the all-pro team in 1968, 1969 and 1972 and played in 10 Pro Bowls. As the ultimate tribute to his NFL career, he was selected for his sport's highest honor—membership in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992. He became only the fifth cornerback in history to enter the Hall.

Barney worked at MichCon as the utility’s manager of Civic Affairs from 1979-1993 and has worked in broadcasting. For the past four years, Barney has been employed at Sinai Grace Hospital, where he is the director of Physician Relations and an associate minister at Hope United Methodist Church in Southfield. He holds a bachelor’s degree in health and science from Jackson State University.

05-10-farmtrue1349900180215palmerscUDM School of Law Announces Urban Farming Symposium - May 20. 201102-28-reuss/www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2011/files/05-10-farmpalmersc1305048815349palmersc1328561556928

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law is co-sponsoring an Urban Farming Symposium on Friday, May 20, 2011, from 8:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. along with the Real Property Law Section of State Bar of Michigan.  Professor Jacqueline Hand, a tenured professor at the School teaching Property Law and Environmental Law, is co-chairing the event with Gregory J. Gamalski (UDM Law, 1983), a partner in the Business Practice Group of Giarmarco, Mullins & Horton, PC, in Troy, Michigan, and Paul Thursam, an associate at GMH.  The Symposium will benefit from a generous in-kind contribution by the United Auto Workers which has donated use of the UAW-GM Riverfront Joint Training Center on Atwater Street along the Detroit Riverwalk for the Symposium.

Law School Dean Lloyd Semple remarked, “This is the third Symposium the School of Law has sponsored this year.  This Symposium in particular shows the School of Law’s continuing commitment as a leader in legal education in the state and metropolitan Detroit area.”  The Symposium is a discussion and examination of key urban issues, which must include urban agriculture and the re-purposing of Detroit.

The Symposium will be open to the public but focused on the legal community and planning organizations.  Detroit is a laboratory where urban farming is fermenting, evolving, and growing. The Symposium is intended to establish a reasoned framework for discussions about the legal and policy issues that should be considered by local units of government and citizens grappling with this dynamic concept.

Professor Daniel Pitera of the University’s Detroit Collaborative Design Center in the School of Architecture will be one of the featured speakers, discussing his work on Recovery Park, a proposed urban farm in the City of Detroit.

For additional information or to register for the event, please see the link on the home page of the UDM Law web site at www.law.udmercy.edu.  Space is limited and reservations are required ($50 general admission and $25 for students).

The University of Detroit Mercy College of Liberal Arts and Education will be hosting a talk with 2010 Miss Michigan Katie LaRoche of Bay City about the nonprofit organization she formed, “One World, One Future.” The anti-human trafficking organization was established to eliminate the crime of modern day slavery on both the local and international levels.

LaRoche will be speaking to UDM’s “Global Issues in Criminal Justice” (CJ-447) course on Tuesday, June 7 at 5:00 p.m. in the Briggs building, McNichols Campus, Room #211.

“Katie has always been extremely passionate in helping make a difference,” said Lindsey Schuholz, a co-founder and the organization’s vice president of administration. Schuholz is also an admissions counselor at UDM and speaks to schools and community groups in her spare time. “We want to raise awareness that these problems exist, and Katie utilized her Miss Michigan platform from the beginning, to talk about how we can all make a difference in other people’s lives.”

“One World, One Future” is an organization run by a group of ambitious women, determined to help their brothers and sisters around the world that are unjustifiably facing a life of slavery.  Their compassion and motivation for this cause is rooted in the empathetic realization of what a life spent voiceless and trapped in slavery would be like.

An Alpha Chi Omega alumna, she first learned of the trafficking problems after her experience volunteering in an orphanage in Belize and her work in Nepal with an agency fighting child trafficking with the Sisters of Mother Theresa. As Miss Michigan, she aspired to bring this issue to the forefront, to lobby for stronger state and federal legislation, and to attain funding for proper rehabilitation services for victims at home and abroad.

Prior to taking the role of Miss Michigan, she worked as a legislative aide in the Michigan House of Representatives in Lansing after graduating from Michigan State University with a sociology degree. LaRoche plans to earn a Ph.D. in international development in the future.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information about LaRoche’s organization “One World, One Future,” visit: http://www.oneworldonefuture.org.

Scholarships will support UDM’s McAuley School of Nursing in developing a demographically representative pool of nursing professionals

The University of Detroit Mercy’s College of Health Professions was selected as one of 52 schools to receive grant funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation New Careers in Nursing Scholarship Program (NCIN). During the 2011-2012 academic year, UDM will receive $100,000 to support their students in the school’s Second-Degree Nursing program who are traditionally underrepresented in the field of nursing. The NCIN Scholarship Program was launched in 2008 by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (NCIN) to address the national nursing shortage, develop a diverse professional nursing workforce, and fuel the pipeline of nurse faculty and leaders.

“Through the NCIN program, we are challenging nursing schools across the country to expand nurse leadership and strengthen education, two clear goals of the landmark 2010 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report on The Future of Nursing, “said Denise A. Davis, Dr. P.H, RWJF program officer for NCIN. “By diversifying the nursing profession through these scholarships, we are also helping to create a health care workforce ready to meet the needs of the 21st century American patient.”

At University of Detroit Mercy, 10 scholarships in the amount of $10,000 each will be awarded to 10 students entering the accelerated nursing program during the 2011-2012 academic year. Since 2008, the NCIN program has distributed 2,317 scholarships to students at 108 unique schools of nursing. The program considers its grantees vital in the development of culturally competent health professionals and future nurse leaders.

“We are extremely pleased to receive these Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grants,” said UDM College of Health Professions Dean Christine Pacini, Ph.D., R.N.  “We are confident that the scholarships will contribute to students with their education and further help the nursing profession in the Detroit-area.”

06-17-theatretrue1349900180215palmerscNew UDM Theatre Company Plays Announced /www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2011/files/06-17-theatrepalmersc1308340805270palmersc1328561592769

The Theatre Company at University of Detroit Mercy proudly announces its $41/41st theatrical season. The 2011-2012 season will continue to demonstrate a commitment to bringing thoughtful, high-quality professional productions to the Metro Detroit community. In honor of our 41st season, we are offering a four-show subscription package for only $41, a savings of 45% off UDM’s regular ticket prices. This year’s season includes Eleemosynary, Anatomy of Gray, Dogman’s Last Stand and Autobahn.

The theatre  season opens with a poignant work by Lee Blessing, Eleemosynary. This offering plucks the tenuous and often delicate strings which bind three generations of mother to daughter. From the eccentric to the cerebral, a mother, daughter and granddaughter live and re-live their relationships with each other, while coming to a personal understanding of the word ‘charity’. Characters explore acceptance, rejection and the significance of realizing one’s own potential. Eleemosynary will run for six performances at the Marygrove Theatre: September 30,  October 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9, 2011.

By the author of the Theatre Company’s 2003 award-winning production of The Diviners, the Theatre Company’s second production is Jim Leonard’s Anatomy of Gray.  Anatomy of Gray explores themes of spiritual survival versus physical survival in the town of Gray, Indiana.  The truth behind the homespun philosophy of “everything good for you has a price” is dissected and probed as the townsfolk of Gray seek deliverance from an unknown malady.  Galen Gray, who is literally blown into town in answer to a young girl’s prayers, finds a town plagued by a mysterious illness. Will Galen Gray be the miraculous healer the town is hoping for?  Directed by Dr. Arthur J. Beer with musical direction by Greg Grobis, Anatomy of Gray will run for 6 performances at the Marygrove Theatre: November 4, 5, 6, 11, 12 and 13, 2011.

The third production is Dogman’s Last Stand by Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning writer Rick Cleveland. Living in a Midwestern steel town, Dogman Thompson is a laid off factory worker with a murky past who must defend the honor of his canine companion after a run-in with a local punk and paperboy, Danny Pascol. Set in a gritty area with even grittier characters, the situations that unfold on Dog’s front porch reveal that assumptions can often determine and define the events of our lives. Directed by David L. Regal, Dogman’s Last Stand will run 6 performances at the Marygrove Theatre: February 3, 4, 5, 10, 11 and 12, 2012.

Closing the season is Detroit native Neil LaBute’s Autobahn. This play cycle is a collection of intensely personal conversations that take place within the confines of a vehicle. Portrayed from a “front seat” point of view, the conversations center on topics of addiction, adultery, paranoia and more.  Full of rich, compelling and sometimes uncomfortable dialogue, this play offers a glimpse into one of the last private frontiers, the sanctity of our own cars. Andrew Huff and David L. Regal will share in directorial and performance capacities in Autobahn which runs for six performances at a location to be determined: March 23, 24, 25, 30 and 31 and April 1, 2012.

The Theatre Company at University of Detroit Mercy continues its mission of providing the metro Detroit community with thoughtful, high-quality and professional productions.  The Theatre Company offers performing arts students, the rare opportunity to work on and off stage with theatre professionals.

The Theatre Company will celebrate Season 41 by offering a four-show subscription package for only $41, a savings of 45% off regular ticket prices. Please note a one time five-dollar processing fee for subscription orders.  All processing fees throughout the season will be waived for subscribers when exchanging tickets, saving our patrons even more!  Season ticket sales will begin August 1, 2011 and are available through October 9.  To request a copy of the subscription brochure, please sign up for the UDM Theatre Company e-newsletter at http://theatre.udmercy.edu.

Back by popular demand is the Student Flex Pass for any full-time student currently enrolled in high school, community college or university.  The Student Flex Pass is $20 and gives students access to unlimited performances of all four shows, a savings of nearly 80% off regular ticket prices!  A student picture ID is required to purchase a Student Flex Pass.

Individual ticket sales begin September 1, 2011.  Adult admission to the 2010-2011 season will be $18 plus a $3 processing fee for each non-subscriber order.  Student individual tickets are are $9; all processing fees for students will be waived.

The Theatre Company’s performances of Eleemosynary, Anatomy of Gray, Dogman’s Last Stand will be at the Marygrove Theatre on the campus of Marygrove College, 8425 W. McNichols Rd.   Autobahn will be performed at a location yet to be determined.  The UDM Theatre Company’s box office on non-performance days is located in Reno Hall on the University of Detroit Mercy campus.  Hours of operation are 12 noon to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday.  To subscribe, or for more information, call the theatre box office at (313) 993-3270, or reserve tickets online at theatre.udmercy.edu.

Summer Engineering Program for High School Students Will Teach Real-World Skills Using Dassault Systemes PLM Solutions

UDM in partnership with Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta), and sponsorship support from the Ford Motor Company Fund, the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company, and Dassault Systèmes, will be part of the Innovation Initiative: Dream It à Build It. The first step of this initiative is the Ford – UDM Innovation Camp beginning Monday, July 18, 2011.

Innovation Camp is a two-week summer program run simultaneously at Georgia Tech and UDM on the McNichols Campus – Engineering Building. The students in Detroit will be led by Georgia Tech grad students and UDM Professor Kirstie Plantenberg, author of a widely-used CATIA textbook. Approximately 30 Detroit-area high school teachers and students will participate from schools from across the areas, including Notre Dame Preparatory School (Pontiac), Troy High School, University of Detroit Jesuit (Detroit), The Roeper School (Birmingham), Oakland Schools Tech Center (Royal Oak) and Brother Rice High School (Bloomfield Hills).

The first week is focused on teaching students how to use Dassault Systèmes V6 Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software platform consisting of CATIA, DELMIA, ENOVIA and SIMULIA. Dassault Systèmes’ PLM solutions are the premier 3D engineering design and collaboration tools used by the aerospace and automotive industries, as well as numerous additional markets, including consumer goods, energy, industrial equipment and others.

During the second week, participants working in collaborative teams from both locations will tackle design problems related to automobiles or renewable energy. Upon completion of the camp, attendees receive a certificate of completion and other awards for their participation.

“The Innovation Initiative is designed to encourage more young people to consider careers in engineering and to introduce the exciting digital technology tools that are being used by industry across all sectors today," said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. "We believe the Innovation Camp and other similar programs are essential to motivate and prepare America’s youth for studies in engineering and help sustain the leadership of our nation in innovation, product development and manufacturing.”

The Innovation Initiative creates a collaborative manufacturing environment enabled by Dassault Systèmes’ V6 platform and by other advanced technologies, such as rapid prototyping that allows students to “print” three-dimensional parts. These systems allow teams comprised of high school students in both Michigan and Georgia to collaborate in real-world design and production processes involved in the creation of innovative vehicles and equipment.

"We are excited to be part of this partnership with some of the world's leaders in engineering and engineering education,” said Dr. Leo Hanifin, UDM Dean of the College of Engineering and Science. “The students in this camp will employ cutting edge systems for design and engineering collaboration that are available at few universities and corporations in the world.  It is our hope and expectation that they will become the engineering leaders of the future."

This initiative is a pilot for a much larger project with hopes to eventually involve 1,000 high schools from across the nation.  The goal is to engage students across clusters of schools to collaborate via social networking media through the V6 platform and to jointly design and build systems of moderate complexity in response to prize challenges.

Said Roy Smolky, academic sales operations for Americas, DELMIA, Dassault Systèmes, “We are proud to contribute to this groundbreaking project, where students can communicate through the V6 single, web-enabled database to develop collaborative designs in real-time, mimicking the way an OEM might work with its extended enterprise of supplier partners.”

Each year, University of Detroit Mercy faculty, staff and students gather in Calihan Hall for the annual "Celebrate Spirit!" event. This longstanding tradition is a symbol of the beginning of the new academic year for students, faculty and staff and will include a worship service for all faiths, a ground breaking, picnic lunch and a student organization fair.

This Mass of the Holy Spirit service will take place on Thursday, Sept. 22, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at Gesu Church, across the street UDM's McNichols Campus. Following the program, there will be a ground breaking for UDM’s new Student Fitness Center (east of the Engineering building under the canopy) at 1:00 pm and a picnic/student organization fair with games around the Fisher Fountain at 1:30 p.m.

"Celebrate Spirit!" gathers the entire University community together to rededicate everyone to UDM's mission, to renew friendships, and to welcome new friends. The yearly event is part of a religious tradition that dates back to the great European universities in the Middle Ages who celebrated the new school year.

As part of the prayer service, guest speaker Jim Paul will discuss his involvement in Engineers Without Borders USA, a program that more than 12,000 professional and student members have come together to work on 350 projects in over 450 developing countries.  Established in 2002, EWB’s Detroit chapter has worked on various projects including the installing of water systems in rural parts of Honduras and Buenos Aires, which previously had no water supplies for residents to drink.

This event is free and open to the entire University of Detroit Mercy community. All are encouraged to attend and receive inspiration as we recommit ourselves to living the UDM Mission in the city of Detroit.

Dorothea’s daughter, Artie, played by Karen Kron (Livonia, MI), long since alienated from both her mother and her daughter is intellectually gifted, yet emotionally unavailable and unable to maintain a presence in either of their lives. Eleemosynary plucks the often delicate strings which bind three generations of mother to daughter.  Directed by Theatre Company alumni Yasmine Jaffri, Eleemosynary will run for six performances at the Marygrove Theatre: September 30 and October 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9, 2011.

09-08-masstrue1349900180215palmerscUniversity of Detroit Mercy School of Law to Celebrate 99th Annual Red Mass/www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2011/files/09-08-masspalmersc1315577932210palmersc1328561587683Michigan Supreme Court Justice to lead Renewal of Lawyer’s Oath of Commitment: The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law will host their 99th annual Red Mass on Tuesday, September 27, 2011, at 5 p.m. at Saints Peter and Paul Jesuit Church located at 629 E. Jefferson Avenue in downtown Detroit. The church is immediately adjacent to the School of Law Campus.

UDM’s Red Mass is an occasion for judges, lawyers, and officials of all faiths to pray together for guidance at the beginning of the new judicial term and join in the Renewal of the Lawyer’s Oath of Commitment. The Oath is recited by all new lawyers in the State of Michigan as a mandatory part of swearing-in ceremonies. Renewal of the Oath is a voluntary means of reaffirming the pledge made at the onset of a lawyer’s career. This year’s Oath will be led by the Honorable Brian K. Zahra, and Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court. The celebrant of the Mass will be Reverend Simon Hendry, S.J., Jesuit priest, a superior of the Jesuit Community and Director of the Catholic Studies Program at UDM. The University of Detroit Jesuit High School Student Choir will perform.

The custom of a special religious ceremony for all members of the bench and bar at the opening of each term of the court arose principally in England, France, and Italy in the early 13th century.  A Mass was celebrated in honor of the Holy Spirit, for which red vestments were worn.  Hence, the celebration became known as the Red Mass.

The University of Detroit Mercy’s annual Red Mass dates back to 1877, when Detroit College, as the University was then known, began its first year with a mass at Saints Peter and Paul Church to ask the blessings of the Holy Spirit on the coming year’s work.  The School of Law continued the tradition when it opened in 1912, again hosting the Red Mass on behalf of the Archdiocese of Detroit at Saints Peter and Paul through the present.

Today, the Red Mass is attended by judges, lawyers, and officials of all faiths asking God to bless, strengthen, and enlighten our civic and religious leaders, all servants of the law and all people of faith, so that in cooperation and mutual trust we may more effectively achieve justice and freedom for all. For more information about the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, visit www.law.udmercy.edu.

09-13-eng100true1349900180215palmerscUDM College of Engineering & Science celebrates 100 years/www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2011/files/09-13-eng100palmersc1315922652652palmersc1328561549112For the past 100 years, University of Detroit Mercy's College of Engineering & Science has graduated more than 13,000 men and women, in 17 different undergraduate and graduate programs, who have made major contributions to their professions, their employers and their communities.

On October 2, 1911, classes began at University of Detroit for 25 students on the College’s first campus on Jefferson Avenue. President William F. Dooley and Engineering Dean John R. McColl initiated a curriculum that included a cooperative education component, which helped to attract students from across the country. Students began spending half their time in the classroom and the other half in the “shop” for a practical application of theory, earning 10-25 cents an hour to pay for tuition, matriculation, laboratory fees and books.

Over the next 15 years, the program expanded to include aeronautical, architectural and chemical engineering, in addition to the original programs in civil, electrical and mechanical engineering. The general purpose of the College of Engineering was to provide students with both theoretical and practical knowledge through a curriculum enhanced with cooperative education. This allowed students to become familiar with employers of engineers as well as the requirements of the profession. Through the years, new degrees, concentrations and minors were created in such areas as entrepreneurship, bioinformatics, architectural engineering, product development and environmental engineering to reflect the changing needs of industry and society.

At UDM, innovative programs are still developed through direct collaboration with corporate partners such as Ford Motor Company and launched to meet emerging challenges.  One such program is the new Advanced Electric Vehicle (AEV) Graduate Certificate curriculum. The College has received high marks from organizations like the Michigan Academy for Green Mobility Alliance.  Since the AEV program was launched just last year, over 200 practicing engineers have enrolled.

Other innovative programs have been created to engage K-12 students in advanced pre-college engineering experiences, such as the Summer Innovation Camp created in partnership with Georgia Tech, Dassault and Ford.

As engineering education enters its second century at UDM, additional new projects and programs are expected in such areas as robotics/mechatronics, transit development and innovation/entrepreneurship.

Over the past century, many UDM graduates have risen to top positions at leading corporations, including serving as president at Ford Motor Company, as CEO at DTE Energy and as vice presidents at Xerox, Lear, GE, IBM, Dell, Dow, Marathon Oil, Boeing and General Dynamics. UDM Engineering graduates also become national leaders in the government and higher education, including four deans of engineering colleges.

To celebrate the College’s 100th anniversary, the University will be celebrating the Centennial year with several academic and social events. They include:

The Carney Latin American Solidarity Archive and African American Studies Program is hosting speaker Miriam Miranda. On Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. in Life Sciences room 113 on the McNichols campus. This event is free and open to the public.

Miranda is the general coordinator of the National Fraternal Black Organization of Honduras (OFRANEH), Vallencita, Honduras. She and her organization have been fighting for the rights of African-descended Garifuna people in Honduras, whose claims to the land they have lived on for generations have been recently threatened by greedy land-grabbers who want to profit from mega-tourism. Miranda has braved detention, tear-gas burns and beatings at the hands of police for the sake of her cause. She has been active with the Assembly of the Peoples of the Land and Sea, who met in February of this year in the community Durugubuti Beibe. There, those gathered demanded the immediate suspension of the construction of the hydroelectric dams in the Patuca river, which would be a death sentence for the Tawahka people and the country.

This is a free event and is open to the public. For more information, please contact CLASA Director Dr. Gail Presbey 313-993-1124 or at presbegm@udmercy.edu.

On Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, leaders from Ford Motor Company and University of Detroit Mercy joined together to celebrate innovation and collaboration on Ford Innovation Day, as part of UDM’s Engineering Centennial year.  Through this unique partnership, UDM has had the opportunity to offer cutting-edge automotive education programs to Ford engineers, such as UDM Master’s Degree in Product Development and the Advanced Electric Vehicle Program.

Ford and UDM continued this collaboration with the third annual Ford-UDM Innovation Contest for university students.  The announcement of this year’s winners and a keynote speech by Ford President & CEO, Alan Mulally was the focus of the Ford Innovation Day program.

For the contest, students were asked to identify current opportunities with existing vehicles as well as possibilities that may arise from emerging technologies to develop proposed innovations to the automobile. Each team, comprised of 3-5 full-time undergraduate students from any major, developed a three-minute digital video communicating the problem addressing the team’s solution.  Ford will present $2,500 to the winning team, $1,500 for 2nd place, and $1,000 for 3rd place. Twenty-six teams from universities across the nation were competing this year.

The program agenda included:
  • 2:30 – 5 pm – Display and discussion of 11 current and future Ford vehicles
  • 5 pm – 6th Annual Ford Innovation Symposium, with presentations by Ford VP, Derrick Kuzak and Ford President & CEO, Alan Mulally
    Student Center, Fountain Lounge
  • 6:00 pm – Ford Innovation Contest presentation of finalists’ entries and announcement of winners

Many UDM graduates have held leadership positions at Ford, including three vice presidents, a Ford fellow and a past president. Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s Group Vice President for Product Development Worldwide, holds engineering bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees at UDM.

Ford Innovation Day events celebrated this broad and deep partnership and explore concepts for innovation. The event was free and open to the public.

University of Detroit Mercy students will get a chance to test their critical thinking skills at 12th annual Ethics Bowl.  Inspired by TV’s College Bowl, and created to examine and find answers for tough ethical issues, the Ethics Bowl will take place on Friday, November 18, 2011 at various location on UDM’s McNichols Campus from 12-6 pm.

Competition begins when the moderator poses a variety of ethical questions to each competing team, and the team that comes up with the most morally defensible answer will win the match.  Questions may address ethical problems on classroom topics (e.g. cheating or plagiarism), personal relationships (e.g. dating or friendship), professional ethics (e.g. engineering, law, medicine), or social and political ethics (e.g. free speech, gun control, etc.).

A panel of judges drawn from UDM faculty, staff and administration, along with several guest judges from off campus, rate answers in terms of intelligibility, focus, depth, and judgment. The first-place team has the honor of representing UDM at the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl. This event is in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE). Forty teams, representing colleges and universities throughout the United States, will put their abilities of ethical reasoning to the test.

12-06-fordtrue1349900180215palmerscUDM Receives $1.5 million Ford Foundation Grant Fitness Center Groundbreaking/www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2011/files/12-06-fordpalmersc1323197678781palmersc1328561600983

The University of Detroit Mercy’s Detroit Collaborative Design Center (DCDC) in the School of Architecture received a $1,500,000 grant from the Ford Foundation to develop and implement a year-long civic engagement process that will yield a long-term land-use vision for the revitalization and growth of the City of Detroit. DCDC will be working together with the Detroit Works program to develop and implement the plan.

The work of DCDC focuses on developing and implementing urban strategies for the City of Detroit that are becoming models for other cities experiencing similar urban challenges.  The Center promotes community collaborations that create inspired and sustainable neighborhood spaces for all people by providing advice, design, and fabrication to urban neighborhoods.

The initiative’s community engagement process will have a significant presence in the community, such as a storefront location where community members can meet and give their input about the projects.

“University of Detroit Mercy is thankful to the Ford Foundation for its support of this community–based initiative,” said University of Detroit Mercy President Antoine M. Garibaldi. “This proposed engagement with community residents, businesses and non-profit organizations is intended to complement other local projects that are focused on revitalizing the City of Detroit. This Ford Foundation grant will significantly increase the scope of the Design Center’s work to enable community-driven development in Detroit,” he added.

Since it was established in 1994, the Design Center has worked with more than 80 local non-profit organizations to create quality design solutions for urban neighborhood spaces. Most recently, the Design Center has worked with the Detroit Office of Foreclosure Prevention and Response to develop a conceptual vision of underutilized land. The Ford Foundation grant will help to expand the Design Center’s mission to assist the community.

“Ensuring that every resident has a say in the future of the city isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do,” said Don Chen, senior program officer of the Ford Foundation. “By capturing the ideas and aspirations of residents, businesses, community organizations and others, this effort can help advance revitalization in Detroit and begin to build a model for other communities across the country.”

“The University of Detroit Mercy and the Design Center see this as a unique opportunity not to work independently but to use the grant as a way to forge relationships with other agencies and non-profit organizations,” said Dan Pitera, FAIA, Executive Director of the Detroit Collaborative Design Center and Associate Professor of Architecture, University of Detroit Mercy. “We will be acting as a guide, not the single leader, to build on this important initiative.”

12-13-lawtrue1349900180215palmerscUDM Law’s Project SALUTE hosts U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans ClaimsFitness Center Groundbreaking/www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2011/files/12-13-lawpalmersc1323785380001palmersc1328561605209

For the first time in the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law’s 99-year history, live oral arguments were presented in front of three federal judges from the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims.  Upon accepting an invitation from Lloyd Semple, Dean of UDM Law, and Tammy Kudialis, Director of UDM Law’s Project SALUTE and the Veterans Appellate Clinic, the Honorable Bruce E. Kasold, Alan G. Lance, and Lawrence B. Hagel graciously took time from their busy court docket to travel from Washington, D.C. to preside over the proceedings.

Students and faculty alike were enthusiastic about the October 26th visit.  Michael Glynn, UDM 2L and President of the school’s Veterans Law Society, explained, “Our school prides itself on preparing students to be ‘practice ready.’  Having the opportunity to host three federal judges at our school to preside over an official hearing is a very, very big deal. Events like this make me want to finish law school and start helping people.”

The three judge panel heard oral arguments in the case of Burden v. Shinseki, an appeal which examined the standard of review to be applied when determining whether a valid marriage existed under Alabama law between a veteran and a surviving spouse, for the purpose of Veterans Affairs death benefits.  Representing the Appellant was Angela Hill from Alexander City, Alabama.  Ms. Hill is a sole practitioner who agreed to represent Mrs. Burden pro bono through the Veterans Consortium Pro Bono Program in Washington, D.C.  Counsel for the Appellee, Eric Shinseki, Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affiars, was Karen Hartridge from Washington, D.C.

In this case, the Appellant, Mrs. Burden, married a veteran in a ceremonial marriage in April 2004.  The veteran died two months later.  In August 2004, Mrs. Burden applied for Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) which is a monthly compensation awarded to a veteran’s surviving spouse, children, or parents when the veteran dies from a service connected disability.  In October 2004, the claim was denied by the Veterans Affairs Regional Officer (RO).  The RO determined that she was not married to the veteran for at least one year prior to the veteran’s death, as required by VA regulations.  Mrs. Burden subsequently submitted a Statement of Marital Relationship and other evidence indicating that she and the veteran had been living together as common law husband and wife since 1998.  However, the RO determined that a common law marriage did not exist under Alabama’s clear and convincing evidence standard of review.  In August, the Veterans Affairs Board of Appeals affirmed the RO’s decision. That decision is now the matter on appeal.

The crux of the issue in this case is the standard of review to be applied when determining whether a valid marriage existed for the purpose of VA death benefits.  Mrs. Burden argued that the proper standard of review in determining whether she had a valid common law marriage is the preponderance of the evidence standard (benefit of the doubt), because it is the “touchstone of veterans’ law.”  In contrast, the Appellee (counsel for the government) argued that the proper standard of review in determining whether there was a valid common law marriage is the standard used in any given state.  In this case, the state law standard is clear and convincing evidence.  Furthermore, the Appellee argued that although the preponderance of the evidence standard is traditionally applied in veterans’ law, the statute and regulations carve out an exception when the issue concerns the existence of marriage.  Moreover, the government argued that the statute clearly instructs the Court to apply the law of the place where the parties resided at the time of the marriage.

After the proceedings, the judges explained to the litigators and audience that the matter before them would not be determined immediately and that after careful contemplation, discussion, and further examination of the law a final ruling would be issued in several weeks.  The judges then allowed for a lengthy question and answer period.  Some students asked about careers in veterans’ law, while others were interested in the background of the judges.  It became clear that the judges possessed a wealth of experience and knowledge in veterans’ affairs issues.  The revelation that each judge had personally served in the armed forces gave hope to several law students/veterans in attendance who aspire to help others in the field of veterans’ law.

In addition to UDM Law hosting its first oral arguments before the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims, the law school also celebrated two other “firsts.”

As a result of UDM Law’s capital improvement fundraising initiative, nearly the entire school has been completely made-over.  Recently completed is the magnificent ceremonial courtroom on the second floor.  The visit by the United States Court of Appeals provided the school with an opportunity to showcase its newest gem in a long line of state-of-the-art classroom renovations.  Several staff members worked hard to ensure the room would be ready for the Court’s momentous visit.

Dean Semple remarked, “It was a great honor to be chosen by the Court to be the venue for this session.  It never would have happened were it not for our nationally recognized veterans’ clinical programs, representing veterans in benefit claims throughout the state and the country.   We carefully planned all aspects of our recent total renovation of our facilities. The new room in which the Court’s session was held worked perfectly and met everyone’s highest expectations.  It was designed with an event such as this one in mind.”

Hosting this event required considerable planning and execution by the UDM Law Team.  Tammy Kudialis, Director of UDM’s veterans’ law program, Project SALUTE, was the primary point person with the Court.  Amy Smith, Director of Special Projects, and Assistant Dean Denise Hickey handled most of the logistics.  Chris Congdon, the Information Technology Director, and his team provided the necessary IT support, which was considerable.

Additionally, Amanda Clark, UDM Law class of 2010, returned to her alma matter to assist in the Court proceedings in the capacity of law clerk for the Honorable Lawrence B. Hagel.  During her time at UDM, Amanda participated in both the school’s Veterans Law Clinic and the Veterans Appeals Clinic.  Because of her strong grades, work ethic, and commitment to helping veterans during her time at UDM, Ms. Clark was the first UDM Law graduate hired to clerk for the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims.  Dean Semple remarked, “Amanda’s presence gave the visit by the court a special meaning for all of us.  We are proud of our successful graduates such as Amanda and always look forward to seeing them.”  Tammy Kudialis was also enthusiastic about the success of the event that she helped bring to campus and gushed with pride over the return of Ms. Clark.  “It was simply thrilling to have the opportunity to watch Amanda put to work the practice-ready skills she learned at UDM Law,” said Ms. Kudialis.

When asked if UDM Law would be willing to host another visit from the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims, Dean Semple replied, “Absolutely!”
