CLASA hosts Technological Design professional John Barrie

The Carney Latin American Solidarity Archive is hosting Appropriate Technology Collaborative Executive Director John Barrie, who will speak on Thurs. Feb. 10 from 7-9 p.m. in the Genevieve Fisk Loranger Architecture Center on the McNichols campus.

Appropriate Technology Collaborative is a nonprofit company that designs award winning green technology for low-income residents around the world. Executive Director Barrie also works as an Adjust Professor of Architecture at the University of Michigan and has a commitment to sustainable design and social justice.

Currently, Appropriate Technology Collaborative and John Barrie are working with college students majoring in engineering, business and design on "World Challenge Design Teams". These teams work together to develop new technologies that can be used around the world in low-income populations. University of Detroit Mercy students are encouraged to get involved or work for similar projects.

This speech will focus on sustainable energy design and developing technologies in developing countries, as well as what UDM students can do to contribute. Appropriate Technology Collaborative says, "Our focus for 2011 and 2012 will be to continue to develop very low cost clean energy technologies that can be built in the countries where they are used and to continue to develop low cost biomedical technologies, like our solar vaccine storage refrigerator."

This is a free event and is open to the public. For more information, please contact CLASA Director Dr. Gail Presbey at (313) 993-1124 or presbegm@udmercy.edu.
