Art imitates life as UDM Theatre Company Presents "A Life In the Theatre"

The theatre stage door opens to reveal unfeigned life in the UDM Theatre Company’s three-weekend run of David Mamet’s A Life in the Theatre. Running February 5 through 20, 2011 at the Marygrove Theatre (8425 W. McNichols Rd Detroit, MI 48221), A Life in the Theatre highlights the relationship of two thespians at opposite ends of their career.

A Life in the Theatre depicts the core principle of the UDM Theatre Company by focusing on a young actor (Joel Frazee) who grows through the guided mentorship of a theatre professional (David L Regal). The play illustrates the rite-of-passage that John experiences as his mentor, Robert emphasizes the discipline needed to maintain a career in the theatre. While each actor comes to realize his destiny of the theatre, friendships are challenged by the drama on and off stage.

A Life in the Theatre premiered at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago in February 1977 with Mike Nussbaum and Joe Mantegna. The play was revived on Broadway in 2010 starring Patrick Stewart and T.R. Knight.

Inspired by his real life experiences, David Mamet wrote A Life in the Theatre in 1974. One of American’s valued playwrights, Mamet won the Pulitzer Prize, New York Drama Critics Circle Award and a Tony nomination for Glengarry Glen Ross (1984). Mamet also is a two-time Academy Award nominee for The Verdict and Wag the Dog and Tony Award nominee for Speed-the-Plow (1988.) He is a founding member of New York’s Atlantic Theatre Company.

A Life in the Theatre is directed by Dr. Arthur J Beer (Warren, MI) and features David L Regal (Detroit, MI) as Robert , and Joel Frazee (Bluffton, OH) as John. The production team rounds out with Autumn Thiellesen (Ferndale, MI) stage managing, Melinda Pacha (Royal Oak, MI) designing set and costumes, Mark Choinski (Dearborn, MI) designing lights and Greg Grobis (Detroit, MI) heading up management and marketing.

A Life in the Theatre opens on February 5 and runs through February 20, 2011.
