01-13-HOFtrue1349900180215palmerscDetroit Titans To Induct 10 Into Sports Hall Of Fame/www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2010/files/01-13-HOFpalmersc1263411206588palmersc1328561574031The ranks of the Detroit Titans Sports Hall of Fame will swell by 10 later this month as the 2010 Induction Class – which includes former Horizon League Men’s Basketball Players of the Year Jermaine Jackson and Rashad Phillips – was unveiled today by UDM athletic director Keri Gaither.

The latest honorees will be inducted on Jan. 23 at halftime of the Titans’ Homecoming basketball game against Horizon League rival Wright State. The class also includes two other former Detroit basketball greats (Cassandra Pack and Joe Kopicki) as well as former stars from baseball (Pat Adams and Mike Pesci), cross country/track and field (Ken Dubois and Kim Jess), golf (Adam Walicki) and tennis (Maria Pandele).

Together, they will bring the number of greats in the Hall of Fame to 112. UDM established its Sports Hall of Fame in 1977, during the University’s Centennial year, in order to honor those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have helped develop the successful tradition of Titan Athletics.

The 2010 induction class will be feted during a private pre-game event, and again following the basketball game during a reception in Calihan Hall to which all former Titan student-athletes have been invited.

“This is a tremendous class of people who have distinguished themselves not on athletically while at the University, but have also gone on to distinguish themselves in their professional careers and their communities,” Gaither noted. “I congratulate them all.”

"LLCs are somewhat new", Sweigman said. "There is not a lot of case law on how they are treated. I wrote a position paper on how I think they should be treated."

He said the assistance and encouragement from Prof. Henning and Prof. Carol Clark were instrumental.

"They were extremely helpful. Professor Henning helped with the writing and Professor Clark helped with some substantive issues," said Sweigman, who spent several months working on the paper.

Gallick, a practicing cardiovascular surgeon for more than 20 years, won for his piece on the value of voluntary disclosure of medical errors as a way for community hospitals to improve quality assurance programs and patient safety without incurring financial or legal liability. He said it was an exhaustive process going from an idea to the finished work product with a big assist from Prof. Henning.

"I can't tell you how many revisions we went through before the final paper was submitted", Gallick said. "I can tell you I was gratified by the response to my paper and the invitation to attend the Health Care Bar Section's annual conference where I received my award--even though I had to leave early to get to Health Law Class that night."

Henning said the effort to teach UDM students good writing techniques begins with the first-year writing course, but also extends beyond that to all classes that incorporate a writing assignment as part of the school's writing across the curriculum plan.

"We do have a terrific first-year writing program," she said. "But that program is supported by our writing across the curriculum requirements and by the willingness of our entire faculty to work with students to help them gain the substantive knowledge required to write these award-winning submissions."

O'Rourke said it was only after prodding from Henning that she decided to enter the Bert W. Levit Essay Contest, which she ultimately won with her essay on the implied waiver of attorney-client privilege. For her efforts, O'Rourke received a $5,000 cash prize and a free trip to Miami, Fla. She also has a better appreciation for legal malpractice and professional responsibility issues.

"I found the topic not only fascinating but also relevant to the future practice of law," said O'Rourke, an evening student from Grosse Pointe Park, Mich. "I was exposed to an area of law about which I had little experience or familiarity prior to the competition."

Gallick encouraged other students to get involved in future writing competitions. Not only is it gratifying to win, he said, but the process also makes for an educational experience that will enhance any student's legal education.

"A lot of work goes into writing and re-writing a paper of this type, but Professor Henning is an excellent source of guidance for anyone willing to commit to the process," Gallick said. "More than an award, the educational experience is highly worthwhile, and I strongly recommend it."

01-26-pirrotrue1349900180215palmerscTV Judge Jeanine Pirro Addressed Victims' Rights and Legal Issues at Law School/www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2010/files/01-26-pirropalmersc1264541306392palmersc1328561535870Hon. Jeanine Pirro, a highly respected, nationally-syndicated television court show judge, former District Attorney and County Court Judge, visited the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law on January 28, 2010. Judge Pirro honored law students with an hour-long discussion centered on her passion for victims¹ rights and her vast experience in the courtroom.Judge Pirro was an Assistant District Attorney in Westchester County, New York, before becoming the first female judge to sit on the county court bench, and the first female District Attorney of Westchester County, serving from 1993 to 2005.

Students filled the Moot Court Room at the School of Law to hear Judge Pirro's presentation and for the opportunity to discuss current issues in the law. "It's all about victims" rights for me," she began. "That¹s my perspective on the law." Her passion for protecting victims was clear as she told stories about her time as a prosecutor and as a judge. "Victims don¹t have rights," she argued. "Criminals have rights. We've got to do something for crime victims, so we don¹t end up losing them, too."

A focus of Judge Pirro's career has been the protection of women and children in domestic violence and sexual crimes. Referencing current publicized court cases such as the Chris Brown assault and battery case and the David Letterman extortion case, Judge Pirro encouraged students to recognize that the goal of any trial should be to uncover the truth. "It's not a game," she reminded them. "You¹re developing the skills here to truly help people."

The Judge Jeanine Pirro show is broadcast locally in Detroit on WKBD/CW50 weekdays at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

The entire University of Detroit Mercy School of Law community extends it thanks to Judge Pirro for taking the time to speak with our students, and for sharing with them her perspective on the value of law and what they can do as attorneys to improve it.

Super Bowl Newsletters

Join the "Mike-roscope" on Facebook

In conjunction with his discussion, Bernacchi also teaches a Promotion Management class at UDM and is co-founder of the website, "America's Marketing High School with Paul Galbenski of Oakland County Schools and Immersive Engineering. Both Bernacchi and Galbenski developed marketing and advertising coursework related to the Super Bowl and created a website, "America's Marketing High School", found at http://www.americasmarketinghighschool.org for high school teachers to use throughout the nation.

"This event gets larger every year," Bernacchi explained, "and if high school students are talking about the game, why not have them learn about the business behind the messages," he added. According to Bernacchi's newsletter “Under the Mike-roscope,” Super Bowl ads will cost $2.75 million for 30 seconds this year. That works out to be $91,667 per second or more than 70 times that of Super Bowl I where ads cost $40,000 for 30 second.

The Super Bowl is the most watched television event each year and he tells students to forget what is happening on the field… the real game is in the other business world, the commercials. He asserts, "Super Bowl ads are the biggest ad game in town each year. Many of us watch the ads and fast-forward through the game."

During the AdNauseum event, Bernacchi discusses advertising and what students should look for while watching the spots. "When the night is over," Bernacchi says, "There will be some winners and some big losers. We look forward to analyzing the spots the next day with UDM and high school students from across the country."

This year, students from Oakland Schools Technical Campus, Holly High School, Lake Shore High School, Hamtramck High School, Rochester Adams High School, Flint Southwestern Academy High School, Henry Ford II High School, and Waterford Mott High School will be attending the event. Those schools who are unable to attend will still be able to view the Super Bowl lecture on the program's website and over 1,600 students, including 178 students at Deltona High School in Florida, will vote for the most effective spots. Participating high school students are also eligible to apply for marketing scholarships (valued up to $1,5000) at University of Detroit Mercy.

Pizza, pop, and snacks have been donated for the occasion courtesy of Pizza Papalis (of Southfield). The event is open to all UDM students, faculty and staff as well as all interested high school marketing and business classes. Media are always welcome.

02-04-presidenttrue1349900180215palmerscUDM president to assume national Jesuit position/www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2010/files/02-04-presidentpalmersc1265305908566palmersc1328561583858University of Detroit Mercy President Gerard L. Stockhausen, S.J., Ph.D., will assume the position of Executive Assistant to the President of the Jesuit Conference and Director of Planning for the Jesuit Conference in Washington, D.C., effective this summer. The Jesuit Conference serves as the national organization of the 10 Jesuit provinces in the United States. In this new role, Stockhausen will serve as chief of staff, advising and working closely with the President of the Jesuit Conference and his staff to lead, direct, and coordinate a series of planning projects that will implement the apostolic choices made by the national and international Society of Jesus over the last few years.“Father Stockhausen has a proven track record in creating and implementing a dynamic vision during his 10 years at the University of Detroit Mercy,” said Thomas Krettek, S.J., Provincial Superior of the Wisconsin Province. “In calling him to this new ministry on behalf of the Society of Jesus, I am confident that he will apply these same talents in helping the 10 Jesuit provinces achieve their strategic plan for a more effective apostolic service.”

Stockhausen has served as UDM president since July 2004. Previously, he was vice president for Academic Affairs and Provost at UDM from 2000-2004.

“During his tenure at UDM, Father Stockhausen led the University with a laser focus on mission, ministry, and growth,” said Board of Trustees Vice Chair Rosita Schiller, RSM. “His commitment to the educational traditions of the founding sponsors (Sisters of Mercy and Jesuits), academic excellence, service, and the City of Detroit has garnered strong support among students, faculty and staff, alumni, and the business community. We will especially miss his unique ability to fuse his priestly ministry with academic administration.”

UDM experienced increases in both enrollment and academic stature during Stockhausen’s 10-year tenure. The University realized record enrollments in the School of Architecture, School of Dentistry, College of Health Professions and Nursing, and in the Sciences. In addition, the School of Law enrollment more than doubled. The full-time student enrollment grew by 37 percent during this period. The 2008 and 2009 freshman fall classes are the highest incoming classes since the consolidation of University of Detroit and Mercy College of Detroit in 1990 to form the University of Detroit Mercy. In addition, freshman ACT scores have increased from 20.7 to 23.9 during the past six years and the University is consistently ranked in the top tier of Midwestern master’s universities by U.S. News & World Report.

Under Stockhausen’s presidency, more than a dozen new academic programs were also established, including five-year undergraduate/graduate programs in Business Administration, Physician Assistant, Teacher Education, Engineering and Chemistry. A new Doctor of Nursing Practice was recently approved to begin May 2010 and a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering is scheduled to begin September 2010. Stockhausen also created the Office of Mission & Identity and hired a permanent director for the Catholic Studies Program to further enhance the University’s Catholic identity.

The University received wide-spread acclaim for its hosting of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Regional Final in 2008 and the NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four in 2009. Both events realized NCAA record attendance.

From 2005 to 2009, the University achieved five straight years of surplus budgets and is on track to achieve the same result this year. Also during this period, the University experienced strong fund-raising results, with particular growth in planned gifts. The University has expanded its outreach to alumni nationally and experienced an increase in donors in 2009.

Stockhausen has also focused on enhancing University facilities for greater student satisfaction. Significant building renovations and an improved internal campus ring road were completed on the McNichols Campus. Plus, a new track & field and a new tennis complex were installed to accommodate three new sports teams: men and women’s lacrosse and men’s tennis. In 2007, the University moved its School of Dentistry from its former Outer Drive Campus to a larger facility in Corktown in order to expand student enrollment and increase the scope of dental care to patients.

As an advocate for Detroit, Stockhausen has worked to improve its neighborhoods by serving as chair of the Board of Directors of University Commons, a northwest Detroit community organization comprised of neighborhood associations, Livernois Avenue businesses, Marygrove College and UDM. The organization works to improve the residential and business environment in the area.

Stockhausen also implemented the UDM Employee Homeownership Program to encourage employees to purchase a home in the neighborhoods surrounding UDM’s three campuses. Through a variety of clinics and outreach programs, the University provides professional services and assistance to approximately 12,000 community members annually.

Stockhausen has served as a director on the boards of Detroit Downtown, Detroit Economic Club, Detroit Economic Growth Corporation and New Detroit. He is also a trustee for Loyola Jesuit High School in Detroit and a board director for Wheeling Jesuit University and Creighton University.

“I am most grateful for my 10 years here at UDM,” said Stockhausen. “I am proud to say that UDM is a better and stronger school today than it was 10 years ago, but it will be very hard to leave all the friends I have made here and all the people who have worked so hard to make UDM an excellent educational experience for our students. On the other hand, I am eager to accept this new assignment and the opportunities it brings to make a positive difference for the Jesuits and their apostolic works throughout the United States.”

Stockhausen holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Michigan; a master’s degree in social ethics and a Master of Divinity degree from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, California; and a master’s degree in mathematics and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from St. Louis University.

The Board of Trustees of the University of Detroit Mercy is planning a process for the selection of Stockhausen’s successor.

02-16-archtrue1349900180215palmerscUDM launches new Architectural Engineering Program/www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2010/files/02-16-archpalmersc1266342198489palmersc1328561599369Beginning in the fall, University of Detroit Mercy’s College of Engineering and Science will offer a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering (B.A.E), providing engineering students a more comprehensive understanding of architectural design. This new degree is like no other in the state, as students will take the same set of classes as first year architecture students and also be required to take a coop.Graduates of the program will work in areas related to building planning, design and construction.  The specialty of building electrical and mechanical systems is in particular demand. As energy prices go up, and as the country places stronger emphasis on sustainable practices, there is a need to make new buildings that are green, and renovate older ones to be more efficient. This program comes at a crucial time for Michigan because the economy needs to diversify into areas with green jobs.

“Co-op graduates from our program will be equipped to design and renovate buildings to be more energy efficient” said Alan Hoback, Chair of Civil, Architectural & Environmental Engineering at UDM.

Students will take courses in all three areas of architectural engineering: structures, construction, and mechanical and electrical systems.  In their last two years at UDM, the students will specialize their coursework in one of these areas.

“As we enter the College of Engineering & Science’s 100th year of educating engineering leaders, we are launching another innovative degree program designed with and for architectural professionals, complimenting UDM’s strong programs in both civil engineering and architecture, explained Leo E. Hanifin, Dean of the College of Engineering and Science.

“I can see a strong demand for graduates of UDM’s unique program,” said Steven R. Berlage, Vice President and General Manager, Turner Construction Company.  “In today’s economy, this degree it will better prepare students to be more successful in their careers.”

The students in this program will get cooperative education employment in their off-terms.  These co-op jobs will give the graduates of the engineering programs a full year of experience before they graduate.  They will help the students decide which specialty of architectural engineering that they would like to focus on, improve their resumes, and provide an income that students use to pay for tuition and living expenses.

Current Civil Engineering student, Erin Brady, says, “The coop program is a wonderful opportunity to get job experience in the field.  I was able to put money toward school and also determine which specialty I would want to study.” Merit and need-based scholarships are available.

This program supplements other engineering programs at UDM including: Civil & Environmental Engineering, Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering, and Electrical and Computer Engineering.  All engineering programs at UDM have received notoriety for their innovative curriculum and their involvement of students into real projects.

The B.A.E. program just received a $100,000 gift from University engineering alumnus, Warren Loranger. The gift will be used to renovate space into a new design studio built specifically for the program.

The first course should build students Spanish language skills as it best prepares students for Mexican Law electives scheduled for the coming summer and fall terms at UDM. Basic proficiency in Spanish is required for this introductory course.Gabriela Sakmar, the licensed Mexican attorney teaching the course, describes this seminar as a preview of Mexican law in which students receive a general overview of the Mexican legal system, its institutions and civil law traditions, as well as general information about the country of Mexico. Throughout the course, students are also learning Spanish legal terminology.

The course began with the history of Mexico — its culture, customs, educational program — and basic legal vocabulary. As the course progresses, participants — law students, faculty and staff — learn about the structure of the Mexican government as well as its politics and economy. Sakmar uses a comparative approach to look at issues that arise in both the U.S. and Mexico, such as the individual rights included in the Mexican Constitution and the U.S. Bill of Rights.

During the 2009-2010 intersession, UDM will offer two other courses in Mexican law to be taught this summer as part of the joint J.D./L.E.D. degree program and the "Degrees of the Americas" program.

04-13-haititrue1349900180215palmerscUDM Faculty Discuss Volunteer Work in Haiti /www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2010/files/04-13-haitipalmersc1271186747178palmersc1328561602849University of Detroit Mercy is hosting a Haiti School Inspection Team Report presentation on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at 5 p.m. in the new Genevieve Fisk Loranger Architecture Center on the McNichols Campus.UDM and the Jesuit Relief Service were responsible for organizing teams of volunteers to inspect damaged schools in Port au Prince in conjunction with Haiti’s Ministry of Education for safety issues. UDM Architecture professor Gilbert Sunghera, S.J. and civil & environmental engineering professor Alan Hoback, along with UDM alumna Marie Haener-Patti will be leading the presentation, focusing on their experiences in Haiti. The team members had to complete an online training program as a preparation tool conducted by Hoback.

Two teams, consisting of UDM Architecture and Engineering alumni and faculty, inspected 55 schools over a period of two weeks in March. Fifteen percent of these schools were damaged beyond repair, and only 60 percent of the schools were considered partially usable. There were 4,700 total schools that needed to be assessed so Haitian children could return to them. There were also many other schools that needed work as well that were not registered. It became apparent that there was a lot of damage in the schools before the earthquake including poor electricity and water issues.

HaitiFr. Sunghera is a consultant for architectural design and faculty member at UDM. He received his BA at the University of California, Irvine focused in Environmental Psychology. His Masters Degree is in Architecture from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Before entering the Jesuit community, he worked for three years as an architectural designer. He was ordained in 2002 and has been expanding his knowledge on the relationship between religion and architecture. His spirituality and architectural experience is what made him have a deep connection with the Haiti relief trip. While Sunghera and his group were able to accomplish the tasks they were assigned to do, it is unclear if they will be need to return to Haiti.

Brother Jim Boynton who was a fellow volunteer on the trip explained, “Downtown Port- au- Prince is still like a war zone. Banks, businesses, and religious institutions have been hit hard, or in some cases mortally wounded. For the first few weeks with our team, I had an inside look at the challenges faced by the health system and by those who had immediate needs of food and shelter. Now, working with the Foi et Joie School network, I am able to see the long-term damage done to the educational system.”

For photos of the trip, visit the website: http://eng-sci.udmercy.edu/programs/eng/civil-environmental/haiti.htm

The talk is free and open to the public with a small reception after the presentation.

Fay, O.P., Ph.D/www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2010/files/05-06-commencepalmersc1273144928540palmersc1328561585395University of Detroit Mercy will hold its annual commencement ceremony for undergraduate and graduate students on Saturday, May 15, 1:30 p.m. at Calihan Hall on the McNichols Campus. More than 800 graduates and their families are expected to attend the event. At the annual commencement, the University will honor one of the most distinguished leaders in American Catholic and Jesuit higher education, Maureen A. Fay, O.P., Ph.D. An Adrian Dominican nun, Fay led the successful consolidation of University of Detroit and Mercy College of Detroit twenty years ago to form University of Detroit Mercy. She served as president of the consolidated institution from 1990 to 2004. UDM President Gerard L. Stockhausen, S.J., Ph.D, her successor, will present her with an honorary degree for her commitment to Catholic higher education.

Since 2005, Fay has been the executive director for the AJCU Leadership Seminar, working directly with Jesuit universities throughout the U.S. Prior to her UDM position, she led Mercy College of Detroit from 1983-1990.

As president of University of Detroit Mercy, Fay focused her attention on the growth and revitalization of UDM, Michigan's largest, most comprehensive Catholic university with an enrollment of approximately 6,000 students. She also maintained a sustained effort to develop urban partnerships wherever the academic pursuits of the university and the needs of the surrounding communities intersected.

In assessing the university's performance, she at one point remarked, "Even though our graduates have gone on to become corporate executives, elected officials, civic and community servants, teachers, attorneys, health care providers, engineers, entrepreneurs, scientists, architects, and noted professionals in every field, that is not the truest measure of our success. The truest measure of our success is that we are making a substantive and positive difference in our world through the lives of our students, our faculty, our staff, and our graduates."

A native of Chicago, Fay received a Master’s of Arts degree in English from University of Detroit and earned a doctoral degree from the University of Chicago in Social Sciences. At the University of Chicago, she won a prestigious Carnegie Fellowship and later received an American Council on Education Fellowship.

She remains active in many Detroit area community and civic organizations as well as with a number of educational organizations including the Detroit Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Downtown (Detroit) Partnership, New Detroit and Kelly Services. She has earned various awards from civic and non-profit organizations such as the Salvation Army, the National Conference for Humanity and Justice, and Alternatives for Girls.

Also during the commencement program, UDM Valedictorian Katelyn McCutcheon, an engineering graduate in the Civil and Mechanical Engineering program, will address the audience, representing this year’s graduates.

McCutcheon has achieved many accomplishments during her time at UDM, including being named to the Engineering and Science Dean’s List every semester. Her extra-curricular activities include Student Dean of the Honors Program, former member of the UDM soccer team, president of Pi Tau Sigma, the National Mechanical Engineering Honor Society.

05-27-missiontrue1349900180215palmerscUDM Graduates receive 2010 Mission Award/www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2010/files/05-27-missionpalmersc1274959595222palmersc1328561582902At its May 15 Commencement Ceremony, University of Detroit Mercy recognized two 2010 graduates with the inaugural Vivere ex Mission (to live out the mission) Award that is given to graduating students who went outside the norm to live the UDM mission. Ervis Fama, who graduated with bachelor's degrees in Biology and Psychology, and Theresa Skora, who earned her master's degree in Architecture, were both selected for exemplifying and living out the mission of University of Detroit Mercy.Commended for their intellectual, social, ethical and spiritual qualities, Fama was also cited for his work as Student Senate president and his involvement with the First Albanian-American Bektashi Monastery, and Skora was cited for her commitment and creative communication efforts in support of University Ministry programs.

While working as a teaching assistant in the Biology Department and maintaining his status on the Dean’s List, Fama has demonstrated his leadership as president of the Student Senate as well as serving on the Students Advisory Board for the College of Liberal Arts & Education and co-chair and vice president of the Mission and Values Committee. He has been a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success as well as serving on the Student Advisory Board for the UDM Institute for Leadership and Service. He extends his reach beyond the University by volunteering to the broaded community as well. Ervis has provided community service with the Capuchin Soup Kitchen of Detroit and the First Albanian-American Bektashi Monastery, where he cooked for gatherings, cleaned and helped remodel the Monastery as a reflection of his deep relationship with God. Ervis has maintained academic integrity while being fully integrated through social development at the University.

Over the last five years, Skora has been involved in almost every program University Ministry runs including Hunger Week, Alternate Spring Break and International Service Experience. She has used her creativity and artistic talents to bring messages of the University Ministry to her fellow students. Many of these deal with the world’s disparities of wealth and poverty. She has also donated time and energy to take part in events dealing with the world and its social justice issues. Skora has also been involved with the University in other ways. She was involved with the Pep Band, American Institute of Architecture Students, Mission-Urban-Social Justice Team of Shared Governance and Ambassador of University Ministry. Skora was also the most active and faithful student member of the Mission-Urban-Social Justice Team of Shared Governance since the team’s conception. 06-11-igvctrue1349900180215palmerscUDM Robotics Team takes first place at International Engineering Competition .... again/www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2010/files/06-11-igvcpalmersc1276167860440palmersc1328561556427For the third consecutive year, University of Detroit Mercy took home the top prize at the Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition, held June 4-7 in Rochester, Michigan.

Fifty-Eight teams representing 47 schools from twenty-two states and six countries entered the competition which required building and testing autonomous robots. UDM competed against universities from around the world including the University of Wisconsin Madison, the U.S. Naval Academy, Princeton, Cornell, University of Illinois Urbana, Penn State, Georgia Tech, Hosei (Japan), Ecole de Technologie Superieure (Canada), Waterloo (Canada), and the University of Texas Austin.

“Our students worked extremely hard and were able to achieve a high score in their last attempt in the Autonomous Challenge, which enabled the team to take overall first place in the IGVC,” said Electrical Engineering Professor Mark Paulik.

The IGVC is an annual international competition created to offer cutting-edge design experience to engineering students. The competition consisted of four challenge events: Autonomous Challenge, Navigation Challenge, JAUS Challenge and the Design Competition. The scores from each of these events are combined to determine the overall First Place Grand Award winner.

“In two of the challenges – Navigation and Jaus – it took the last run to nip Hosei University (the eventual 2nd place winner in these challenges and in the grand award) by a few seconds each time,” said Professor of Electrical & Computer Mohan Krishnan. “It was also our best performance in the glamour event of the competition - the Autonomous Challenge – in which we came first and were about 50 feet from completing the course when we timed out.”

The University of Detroit Mercy team received the 2010 First Place Grand Award with a score of 108: the team won first place in three of the four challenges. Hosei University from Japan placed second with a score of 82.

2010 IGVC"It was magnificent teamwork, truly dedicated students and a will of iron that enabled us to achieve the 1st place grand award as well as 1st place positioning in all three on-field challenges," said Utayba Mohammad, one of the ECE faculty directing this year's IGVC student team.

The UDM team Cerberus consists of students Matt Parrish, Jason Osbourne, Alex Szmatula, Jean Carrier, Richard Fatyma, Elona Palushaj, Sergei Gage, Tom Wogaman, David Shelly, Rebeca Espinoza, Maen Hammod, Qing Wang, Yue Chen, Qingxiao Ni and Jie Li and engineering faculty advisors Mark Paulik, Mohan Krishnan, Chaomin Luo and Utayba Mohammad.

“This victory once again reflects the high quality of our students and the unique capability of our faculty to teach students to design and build complex intelligent electro-mechanical systems that work,” said UDM Engineering & Science Dean Leo Hanifin. “This education results in highly effective engineers with the competence and the confidence to change the world through the development and deployment of advanced technologies, products and systems.”

The ASME IShow provides a platform for top collegiate teams to compete for seed money to further develop their product. These teams must demonstrate their technical creativity and the winners must prove that they have a sustainable business model to a judging panel of successful innovators, industry experts, venture capitalists, and intellectual property specialists.

Team SEAL’s members (Mark Fazi, Obafemi Osunfisan, Raymond Slowik, and Matthew Butkovich) developed a portable, intelligent lifting device (Stability Enhanced Assistive Lift) to assist people who have fallen to the floor to safely regain a standing position. Such a device has the potential to allow seniors to remain more independent in their homes, and to allow reductions in staffing costs in senior living centers. The team’s faculty advisors are Nassif Rayess (Mechanical Engineering), Sandra Yost (Electrical and Computer Engineering), and Mike Bernacchi (Marketing).

ASME IShowThe competition scores were based on a five-page product plan and a seven-minute presentation, which was given by Fazi and Osunfisan at the IShow held in Pittsburgh. Teams from MIT and Stanford finished ahead of Team SEAL. The other seven finalists were teams from MIT, Columbia University, University of Michigan (2), Arizona State University, Santa Clara University, and Western New England University.

06-14-chinatrue1349900180215palmerscUniversity of Detroit Mercy Educator to Join Prestigious Program in China/www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2010/files/06-14-chinapalmersc1276533330219palmersc1328561535211University of Detroit Mercy administrator and educator Lara Wasner will join fifteen educators from across the country in the prestigious Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad program focusing on China’s history, culture, changing society and rapid economic growth. During the month-long seminar in June and July, the group will visit Beijing, Xi’an, Chongqing and Shanghai, with an option to continue to Hong Kong for four days. The program will not only enhance the work of the educators, but will have a wider impact through the curriculum projects that each participant is required to develop based on their experience; the projects will be available for use by educators nationwide.

The study program, open to university and college professors of all disciplines, provides participants an opportunity to learn about China’s long history, vibrant contemporary culture and diversity. Beijing, the capital and political center of the country, has been transformed in recent decades through rapid modernization. Xi’an, in north central China, was the capital during many dynasties, and the eastern terminus of the Silk Road, long reflecting the dynamism and importance of international trade and cultural exchange. Chongqing, the largest city in China (population 30 million), played an important role in World War II, and now juxtaposes urban growth and rural development. The final stop is Shanghai, a financial and cultural center host this year to the first expo held in China. Those who choose to go to Hong Kong will see a very different city influenced both by its colonial history and by contemporary China.

Wasner directs the Language and Cultural Training Department at the University of Detroit Mercy (UDM), manages UDM’s community-based foreign language and English as a Second Language programs, coordinates traditional on-campus language courses, and assists foreign language faculty with curriculum development. She founded UDM’s Brazil Study Abroad Program, sending students to Brazil to study Portuguese and Afro-Brazilian culture. Wasner also established UDM’s English immersion summer camps for Chinese students, which has resulted in joint-degree programs between UDM and several Chinese universities. She received a B.A. in English literature and an M.A. in education administration from the University of Detroit Mercy.

The Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad: History and Culture in China program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and Chinese Ministry of Education, and is administered by the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations and the China Education Association for International Exchange.

The National Committee on United States-China Relations, established in 1966, is the leading national, non-partisan public affairs organization devoted exclusively to building constructive and durable relationships between the United States and China. The Committee’s continuity of experience and depth of associations in Greater China and the United States help it perform its key mission of creating opportunities for informed discussion and reasoned debate about issues of common interest and concern to the United States, the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong SAR and Taiwan.

07-14-theatretrue1349900180215palmerscUniversity of Detroit Mercy Theatre Company Celebrates 40 Years of Theatre/www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2010/files/07-14-theatrepalmersc1279113323520palmersc1328561583646The UDM Theatre Company proudly announces its 40th theatrical season at the University of Detroit Mercy. The 2010-2011 season will continue the UDM Theatre Company’s tradition of theatrical excellence in the Metro Detroit community. Presented at the Marygrove Theatre on the campus of Marygrove College, the UDM Theatre Company’s 40th season will feature Keely & Du, Cabaret, A Life in the Theatre and The Tempest.

Opening the UDM Theatre Company’s 40th season is Jane Martin’s heart-pounding drama of clashing adult ideologies: Keely & Du. Keely, a young pregnant woman, is being held against her will and is forced to question her life and individual freedoms. Du, an older woman, is living out her convictions while caring for Keely. Can two people, despite intense philosophical disagreement, become friends? What is the extent of individual freedom? When do personal convictions cross ethical and moral lines? Nominated for the 1994 Pulitzer Prize, Keely & Du is a joltingly real play that is rooted in human experience. Directed by David Regal, Keely & Du will run for seven performances: October 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9 at 8 p.m., and October 3 and 10 at 2 p.m.

The season’s second production has the UDM Theatre Company and the Marygrove College’s Music and Dance departments joining together to produce Cabaret! Known for its sexy, witty and politically-charged musical numbers, Cabaret is set in the intimate Kit Kat Klub of 1930s Berlin just prior to the Nazi rise to power. The play highlights the impact of global conflicts on the lives of everyday people during one of the darkest moments in world history. Directed by Greg Grobis and featuring the students of both universities as well as local guest artists, this sexy, seedy and shadowy production will show that, truly, “life is a Cabaret!” Seven performances: November 12, 13, 18, 19 and 20 at 8 p.m., and November 14 and 21 at 2 p.m. David Mamet’s A Life in the Theatre will be the UDM Theatre Company’s third production. The play focuses on the relationship between a seasoned professional actor, played by David Regal, and a novice actor. This comedy depicts the core principle of the UDM Theatre Company by illustrating the rite-of-passage of the novice actor while emphasizing the discipline needed to maintain a career in the theatre. Directed by Dr. Arthur Beer, A Life in the Theatre will run for three weekends: February 4, 5, 11, 12, 18 and 19 at 8 p.m., and February 6, 13 and 20 at 2 p.m.

To close the season, The UDM Theatre Company will revive the first play it produced 40 years ago: William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Considered to be one of Shakespeare’s greatest works, The Tempest tells the story of Prospero, played by Dr. Arthur Beer, who is fighting for justice after being deprived his throne by his brother. This classic chess match of men versus monsters celebrates its 400th anniversary this year. The Tempest will be directed by Andrew Huff and will run for three weekends: March 25 and 26, April 1, 2, 8 and 9 at 8 p.m., and March 27 and April 3 and 10 at 2 p.m.

Take advantage of the UDM Theatre Company’s best ticket offer and get season tickets to all four shows for only $46 for regular subscribers or $41 for discount subscribers, a savings of 45% off regular ticket prices. All processing fees will be waived for subscribers, saving you even more! Season ticket sales will begin August 1, 2010 and are available through October 10. To request a copy of the subscription brochure, please sign up for the UDM Theatre Company e-newsletter at http://theatre.udmercy.edu.

Back by popular demand is the Student Flex Pass for any full-time student currently enrolled in high school, community college or a university. A student picture ID is required to purchase a Student Flex Pass. Individual ticket sales begin September 1, 2010. Adult admission to the 2010-2011 season will be $18 for plays and $25 for the musical plus a $3 processing fee for each non-subscriber order. Student rates are $9 for plays and $12 for the musical; all processing fees for students will be waived.

The UDM Theatre Company’s performances are held at the Marygrove Theatre on the campus of Marygrove College, 8425 W. McNichols Rd. Each year, University of Detroit Mercy faculty, staff and students gather in Gesu Church for the annual "Celebrate Spirit!" event. This longstanding tradition is a symbol of the beginning of the new academic year for students, faculty and staff and will include a worship service for all faiths, a picnic lunch and a student organization fair.

LOCATION CHANGE: The Celebrate Spirit! service will now take place in Gesu Church, on Oak Drive, one block north of McNichols Campus.
See Gesu information.

The picnic and student organization fair following the service will still take place in the Fisher Fountain area on McNichols Campus.

This festive event will take place on Thursday, Sept. 23, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on UDM's McNichols Campus. "Celebrate Spirit!" gathers the entire University community together to rededicate everyone to UDM's mission, to renew friendships, and to welcome new friends. The yearly event is part of a religious tradition that dates back to the great European universities in the Middle Ages who celebrated the new school year.

The festivities include a worship service led by Rev. Gary Wright, S.J., for all faiths in Gesu Church, which serves as the official welcome to the new school year. There will also be a picnic lunch and student organization fair on the McNichols Campus around the Fisher Fountain to introduce students to the many student activities they can be involved in.

Guest speaker Faye Nelson, President and CEO of the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy and University alumnus (‘75, ‘80) will help the celebration focus on our education “in an urban context.” She has been involved in the restoration of the Detroit Riverfront and can help the university community better use our resources to address the needs of our larger community, Detroit, and to participate in its redesign and renewal.

This event is free and open to the entire University of Detroit Mercy community. All are encouraged to attend and receive inspiration as we recommit ourselves to living the UDM Mission in the city of Detroit.

09-21-archtrue1349900180215palmerscArchitecture Hosts “Urban Artscape” /www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2010/files/09-21-archpalmersc1285087153436palmersc1328561561440

University of Detroit Mercy Architecture Professors Noah Resnick and Dan Pitera will participate in "Urban Artscape" on October 5 at 6 p.m. The event is a panel discussion featuring several of the city's top urban art innovators, as part of the Hamilton Anderson Associates' "CHALLENGING DETROIT: (re)generating urbanism." series.

"Urban Artscape" is a program featuring many of the city's top innovators of urban art. The event aims to explore how certain social, economic and geographic factors impact their work, including the ways in which the scale and scope of artistic interventions are informed or modulated by the city.  The panel will also evaluate the short and long-term effectiveness of such interventions as devices for urban regeneration.  Whether describing a single urban intervention, an academic analysis of Detroit’s urban artscape, the public aspect of urban art, or the implementation of a larger, ephemeral artistic festival, "Urban Artscape" hopes to look at the effectiveness of these interventions when viewed from an ever-widening perspective?

Other speakers on the panel include Public Pool Art Space Co-Founder and Vice President of Integrated Marketing at Lovio George, Jim Boyle; Director of Public Art Workz Urban Muralist, Chazz Miller; and Hamilton Anderson Associates' Melissa Dittmer.

The series strives to serve as a platform for the discussion of innovative strategies for the social, economic and environmental regeneration and redevelopment of the city. Overall effectiveness of interventions, from creative urban art to solo urban intervention acts will be discussed.

This is a free event; the public is encouraged to attend at the 5th floor of Willy’s Overland Loft, 444 W. Willis Street in Detroit. A reception will follow at Re:view Contemporary Gallery in Detroit. For more information visit http://www.roguehaa.com.

09-22-circletrue1349900180215palmerscSister Maureen A. Fay and Warren Loranger Honored at Ignatian Circle Dinner/www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2010/files/09-22-circlepalmersc1285166354017palmersc1328561597770

Maureen A. Fay, O.P., Ph.D. ’66 and Warren Loranger ’51 will be honored at University of Detroit Mercy's Ignatian Circle Dinner on Friday, September 24, 2010 at 5:30 p.m. in the Fountain Lounge of the Student Center Building, McNichols Campus. A mass will precede the dinner at 4:30 p.m. UDM President Michael Joseph will present the awards to the very special individuals for their contributions to the University and our community.

Maureen A. Fay, O.P., Ph.D. ‘66, University of Detroit Mercy President Emerita, is the recipient of  University of Detroit Mercy’s Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award. She is being recognized for her professional achievement and distinguished career in higher education and for her visionary leadership in uniting Mercy College of Detroit and University of Detroit to form the University of Detroit Mercy.

Sister Maureen began her vocation as an educator, earning a bachelor’s degree from Siena Heights College, a master’s in English from University of Detroit and her Ph.D. in Social Sciences from the University of Chicago. She held both faculty and administrative positions at several higher learning institutions in Michigan and Illinois, and served as president of Mercy College of Detroit from 1983-1990.

Through a bold vision, she was at the forefront of uniting Mercy College of Detroit and University of Detroit to preserve the future of Catholic higher education in the city of Detroit. Sister Maureen skillfully collaborated, guided, and served as the first president of the consolidated University of Detroit Mercy from 1990-2004. She also had the distinction of being the first woman president of a Jesuit university. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the successful consolidation of the two institutions.

During her 14 years as UDM president, Sister Maureen led the University with wisdom and insight focusing on UDM’s mission – to provide academic excellence within a Catholic and urban context. Her accomplishments were numerous, including the Commission on the Future to help position UDM’s programs and plans for the 21st century; the $101.3 million Legacy Campaign; the Prioritization strategic planning process and Vision 2020 implementation; construction and renovation of facilities; modernization of the technological and physical infrastructure; and implementation of innovative programs. Her skills at strategic planning, commitment to the Detroit area, and ability to establish positive working relationships with students, faculty, alumni and the community have earned her much admiration and long-standing support.

Since 2004, she has been the executive director of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities Leadership Seminar. Sister Maureen has shared her knowledge and expertise as a member of numerous university, health care, professional and corporate boards and committees.

Respected by her peers and honored for her community service, Sister Maureen is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Adrian Dominican Outstanding Achievement Award, the Alternatives for Girls Role Model Award and the Salvation Army William Booth Award.  In addition, she has received honorary degrees from six esteemed schools: Siena Heights College, St. Thomas University, Marquette University, Xavier University and College of the Holy Cross as well as University of Detroit Mercy this past May.

LorangerWarren Loranger ’51, retired president and CEO of Pella Window & Door Company, is this year’s recipient of The Founders Award. He has been recognized for his commitment to his alma mater in the tradition of UDM’s Jesuit and Mercy founders.

Loranger earned his bachelor’s degree in Architectural Engineering at the University of Detroit after his service in the Air Force during World War II, where his education prepared him for his future business endeavors. His hard work and creativity produced a multi-million dollar company out of a modest start.

Loranger has remained an advocate for his alma matter and the School of Architecture. His generous financial gifts to the School of Architecture have led to significant renovations, including the Genevieve Fisk Loranger Exhibition Center and various interior and exterior project to the building. In 1994, the building was named in his honor to reflect his ongoing commitment to the School. Recently, he helped to support a new academic degree program in Architectural Engineering. Loranger continues to have the interest and well being of UDM students in mind.

Loranger’s personal philosophy is “to give back, to help people achieve whatever they are capable of doing.” He helps people in large and small ways through quiet philanthropic efforts, such as making a college education possible for several students or creating space for groups to undertake activities.

Several YMCAs have benefited from Loranger’s support: the Bay City YMCA, Bay City, MI; Venice Family YMCA, Venice, FL; and South County Family YMCA, Warren Loranger Englewood Branch. His contributions have also made a difference to the Englewood Art Center in Englewood, FL; Ringling College of Arts and Design; Raven Hill Discovery Center in Northern Michigan, the Boy Scouts of America, Bay County, MI; and Waterford Youth Assistance, Waterford, MI.

Loranger hopes to encourage others to support UDM’s mission by sharing his resources with his alma mater. He says, “People who understand the importance of the type of education UDM provides, and the foundation it gives to its graduates, will support the University’s work.” Warren Loranger truly exemplifies the Jesuit motto of being “Men for Others.”

Area school children are invited to the free event, but it is open to the public as well.

View the UDM photo gallery for "Safety Street"

Over 400 neighborhood children from grades K-5th will attend “Safety Street” this year, dressed in their favorite costumes. UDM students in Halloween attire will distribute candy to the children and also offer free face painting during the event.

To prepare for the event, UDM students hold a Safety Street Façade Blowout Party, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in the Fountain Lounge. Fraternities, sororities, and student groups participate in the fun evening; the School of Dentistry participates by giving out free toothbrushes, toothpaste and dental floss. The School of Architecture was the first to establish Safety Street for neighborhood children, but the event soon evolved to include the entire UDM community.

Detroit Free Press journalist and author John Gallagher and community development expert Harriet Saperstein will speak at University of Detroit Mercy on Monday, Oct. 25 from 5 - 6:30 p.m. in the Student Center Fountain Lounge on UDM’s McNichols Campus. The lecture will focus on the future of the City, from change to revitalization.

Gallagher will also discuss his new book, Reimagining Detroit, which focuses on a newer, smaller city with big opportunities. In the book, he concentrates on the uses of vacant space for community growth and wellness, whether it is using a vacant plot of land for community gardening or putting in transit systems on too-large highways. During the lecture, Reimagining Detroit will be discussed, as well as certain changes that can be made that could lead to opportunities for a revitalization of the city. Gallaghere emphasizes, “A better future awaits Detroit.”

Gallagher grew up in both Chicago and New Jersey, graduated from DePaul and Columbia universities, and currently resides in Detroit along the east riverfront. He has been writing for the Free Press for over 23 years. Gallagher has written two other books about architecture in Michigan; Reimagining Detroit is his most recent release.

This event is sponsored by the UDM College of Liberal Arts & Education and the Student Social Work Association.

10-26-cabarettrue1349900180215palmerscUDM Theatre Company and Marygrove Music & Dance Present "Cabaret"/www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2010/files/10-26-cabaretpalmersc1288123613131palmersc1328561599513Leave your troubles outside and come to the UDM Theatre Company’s and Marygrove College Music and Dance Department’s special 7-performance production of Cabaret! Running November 12 through 21, Cabaret will be performed at the Marygrove Theatre at 8 pm on Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays and 2 pm on Sundays. “What good is sitting alone in your room? Come hear the music play!”

Join the Master of Ceremonies as he beckons you to leave your troubles outside and experience the sexy, witty and politically charged musical numbers of the Kit Kat Klub. This legendary landmark musical, set just prior to Nazi rule in 1930’s Berlin, highlights the impact of global conflicts on the lives of everyday people during one of the darkest moments in world history. Rebellious and melancholy, audacious and gleeful, Cabaret sizzles and provokes with classics such as Wilkommen, Money and Cabaret. Cabaret is recommended for mature audiences due to sexual situations and humor.

Cabaret premiered on Broadway in 1966 and in 1972 was turned into an eight-time Oscar award-winning movie starring Liza Minnelli, Michael York and Joel Grey. Later, the musical was revived on Broadway with Alan Cumming and Natasha Richardson, capturing the Tony Award. Joe Masteroff’s book for Cabaret was based on John van Druten’s play I Am a Camera, itself inspired by Christopher Isherwood’s Berlin Stories.

Susan Boonenberg and Maxwell Bolton will star as Sally Bowles and the Master of Ceremonies alongside Diane Hill (AEA) and Greg Traskoma (AEA) as Fraulein Schneider and Herr Schultz. Patrick O’Reilly (Cliff), Joel Frazee (Ernst Ludwig) and Kristen Schultes (Fraulein Kost) comprise the other principal roles. The Kit Kat Klub ensemble will feature students from both University of Detroit Mercy and Marygrove College.

Cabaret: book by Joe Masteroff, lyrics by Fred Ebb and music by John Kander. It will be directed by Greg Grobis with musical direction by Tara Sievers and choreography by Sue Panek. The creative team includes David Regal (Artistic Director), Melinda Pacha (Costume Design), Mark Choinski (Scenic Design), Kathleen Lanphear (Lighting Design) and Matthew Lira (Stage Manager).

Opening November 12 and playing a limited, two-week engagement till November 21, 2010 at the Marygrove College Theatre, Cabaret will highlight that “life is a Cabaret!” Seven performances: November 12, 13, 18, 19 and 20 at 8 pm, and November 14 and 21 at 2 pm. Thursday, November 18 will be a special pay-what-you-can performance!

Tickets for Cabaret are $25 for adult admission and $12 for students. Please note: there is a $3.00 service fee per order for adult non-subscribers.
Cabaret performances will take place at the Marygrove Theatre on the campus of Marygrove College, 8425 W. McNichols Rd. Detroit, MI 48221. The Theatre Company’s box office is located in Reno Hall on the University of Detroit Mercy campus. Hours of operation are 12 noon to 5 pm, Tuesday through Friday. The box office will move on the day of the performance to the Marygrove Theatre and will open 45 minutes prior to curtain. For tickets, call the theatre box office at 313-993-3270 or reserve your tickets online at http://theatre.udmercy.edu.

Competition begins when the moderator poses a variety of ethical questions to each competing team, and the team that comes up with the most morally defensible answer will win the match.  Questions may address ethical problems on classroom topics (e.g., cheating or plagiarism), personal relationships (e.g., dating or friendship), professional ethics (e.g., engineering, law, medicine), or social and political ethics (e.g., free speech, gun control, etc.).

A panel of judges drawn from UDM faculty, staff and administration, along with several guest judges from off campus, rate answers in terms of intelligibility, focus, depth, and judgment. The first-place team has the honor of representing UDM at the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl. This event is in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE). Forty teams, representing colleges and universities throughout the United States, will put their abilities of ethical reasoning to the test.

For more information, please contact Associate Professor of Philosophy Martin G. Leever at 313-993-1135 or visit http://www.liberalarts.udmercy.edu/philosopy/ethicsbowl/index.htm.

UDM's Carney Latin American Solidarity Archive (CLASA) and the Gesu Peace and Justice Committee will host Father Alberto Franco on Monday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. in the Ford Life Sciences Building, room 113, on the McNichols Campus.

Franco is a Colombian priest and human rights advocate who has worked for over 20 years to support the rights of Afro-Colombian and mixed race farmers. Colombia struggles with having the second largest number of internally displaced people in the world; many Colombian people are being forced out of their homes due to military occupation. Franco will be discussing his life’s work of building peace during times of war.

He is the executive secretary of Inter-Church Justice and Peace Commission, a human rights and community organizing group. Despite numerous death threats, he continues to work and spread knowledge of injustice and human rights. Father Alberto said, “In Colombia it is easier to form a guerrilla group than a trade union, and less dangerous. Colombia is a democracy where active non-violence is almost impossible.”

Franco is currently on a speaking tour of the Midwest to raise awareness of the situation taking place in Colombia. He has been a featured speaker at the United Nations World Council of Churches, and has traveled across the world to spread his story of peace in a violent world.

This is a free event and is open to the public. For more information, please contact CLASA Director Gail Presbey at 313- 993-1124 or presbegm@udmercy.edu.

Ford Motor Company's Group Vice President of Design and Chief Creative Officer J Mays will visit the University of Detroit Mercy to give the lecture, "Innovation and Design," as part of the 2010 Ford Innovation Symposium. The symposium will be held on Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010 at 6 p.m. on the McNichols Campus in the Life Sciences Building, Room 113.

Mays joined Ford Motor Company in 1997 as vice president of Design and was named group vice president in 2003. In 2005, he took on the expanded role of group vice president and chief creative officer.

During his career at Ford, Mays has simultaneously managed and developed the design language of multiple vehicle brands. He has also successfully led the effort to develop a single, global Ford Design language that now applies to most vehicles Ford produces around the world. Currently, he is responsible for shaping the global design direction of Ford Motor Company’s Ford, Lincoln and Mercury brands, and creating long-range strategic design visions that support the worldwide ‘One Ford’ business model to develop products customers want and value.

Mays has received many professional awards and accomplishments, including the Harvard Design School annual Excellence in Design Award in February 2002 and the Don Kubly Professional Attainment Award from the Art Center in September 2002. In 2010, he was profiled in the January issue of Esquire magazine. Mays has also taken on unique advisory consulting roles.  For example, he worked with Disney/Pixar on vehicle design for the 2006 animated feature-film Cars.

For the second year, undergraduate students had the opportunity to enter the 2010 UDM Ford Innovation contest, showcasing the most creative new ideas for future Ford vehicles. At the symposium, the winners of this year’s contest will be announced. For more information, contact Nicole Oliver at 313-993-1218 or nicole.oliver@udmercy.edu.

11-09-norquisttrue1349900180215palmerscSchool of Architecture hosts “The Value of Urban Complexity” featuring former Milwaukee Mayor John Norquist/www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2010/files/11-09-norquistpalmersc1289315073541palmersc1328561601311

University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture will hold a discussion featuring John Norquist on Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010. The event will be held in the Genevieve Fisk Loranger Center of the Warren Loranger Building on the McNichols campus from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m.

The theme of the talk is “The Value of Urban Complexity” and is part of the 2010-2011 Architecture Lecture Series: Shifting Landscapes + Inter-Disciplinary Discussions. Norquist is President and CEO of Congress for the New Urbanism, (CNU), an organization that promotes sustainable, walkable communities.

Formally the mayor of Milwaukee, WI from 1988-2004, the area saw many successful changes under Norquist’s leadership.  Milwaukee saw a decline in poverty, a major boom in new downtown housing and an increase in education and welfare reform in the state.

He oversaw a revision of the city's zoning code and reoriented development around walkable streets and public amenities such as the city's 3.1-mile Riverwalk. Named a Governing magazine “Public Official of the Year” during his tenure as mayor, he also received widespread recognition for championing the removal of a .8 mile stretch of elevated freeway, clearing the way for an anticipated $250 million in infill development in the heart of Milwaukee.

At CNU, he has joined local activists in numerous cities as a key champion of plans to replace freeways with boulevards. A leader in national discussions of urban design and educational issues, Norquist is the author of "The Wealth of Cities", and has taught courses in urban policy and urban planning at the University of Chicago, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning, and at Marquette University. CNU works with partners such as the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Green Building Council to restore communities.  Together, they work to transform old building complexes into efficient street and neighborhood networks and provide a base for public transportation.

The event is in collaboration with Lawrence Tech University and is sponsored by University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture, Great Lakes Fabricators and Erectors Association, AIA Detroit, Dichotomy, HOK Toronto, Rossetti Associates, Master of Community Development Program and SSOE, Inc., University of Detroit Mercy Women's & Gender Studies Program, Wayne State University, Lawrence Technological University.

PROCLAMATION

Erie City Council recognizes Garibaldi’s leadership - Feb 2, 2011 (.pdf)

Recognized as a national scholar in higher education, Garibaldi’s career spans more than 35 years as a tenured professor, accomplished researcher and educational administrator. Garibaldi has served as Gannon University’s president since 2001. During that time, the university’s enrollment has increased by 24% from 3,401 to 4,238 students, the highest in 17 years, and its endowment more than doubled. In 2008, he successfully completed the largest comprehensive fund-raising campaign in Gannon’s history, raising more than $31.5 million in private gifts and $8 million in foundation and government grants.

Other major accomplishments during his nearly ten-year tenure include: U.S. News & World Report top-tier rankings for seven straight years, Best Value (or Great School, Great Price) rankings for five years, and a Top Up-and-Coming recognition; highly successful five-year Strategic Plans I and II; establishment of the Erie Technology Incubator; and acquisition of and major renovations to more than a dozen administrative, academic and student housing buildings.

“I am honored to be selected as the first lay president of the University of Detroit Mercy,” said Garibaldi. “As a nationally-ranked Catholic university with its distinctive Mercy and Jesuit traditions, I look forward to working with the faculty, staff, students and trustees to continue to advance the academic excellence and student-centered emphases that are reflected in the UDM mission.”

A native of New Orleans, La., Garibaldi earned his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Minnesota in 1976 and his Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Howard University in 1973. He remains an active scholar in the professional disciplines of education and psychology, producing more than 11 books and monographs and more than 80 research articles and chapters. His research interests focus on educational achievement and attainment in schools, African-American males, teacher education, and the growing gender and racial disparities in education. Garibaldi is recognized as a Fellow of both the American Psychological Association and the American Educational Research Association.

“The University was fortunate to have a highly select group from which to choose our new president,” said UDM Trustee and Kelly Services CEO Carl Camden, who chaired the presidential search committee. “President Garibaldi was selected by a Board vote after a national search that encompassed 60 candidates. He was the final candidate recommended by the presidential search committee, comprised of trustees, alumni, faculty, administrators and student. We think President Garibaldi will advance UDM not only as an institution of higher education, but also as a community resource in the Detroit area.”

Prior to joining Gannon University, Dr. Garibaldi was a Senior Fellow in the Office of the Vice President for Collaborations and Corporate Secretary at the Educational Testing Service in 2000-01; he served as the first Provost and Chief Academic Officer at Howard University and a tenured Professor in the School of Education between 1996 and 2000; and, between 1982 and 1996, he served successively as Chairman of the Education Department, Dean of Arts and Sciences, and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Xavier University of Louisiana. Between 1977 and 1982, he was a federal government administrator and researcher at the U.S. Department of Education’s National Institute of Education, where he was also a staff member of the National Commission on Excellence in Education, which produced the landmark report, A Nation at Risk.

He has received numerous awards and honors, including honorary doctorates from Seton Hall University and Our Lady of Holy Cross College, La.; the University of Minnesota Outstanding Achievement Award; the Howard University Distinguished Alumni Award for Postgraduate Achievement in Education; and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Service Award. In March 2010, he received the “Person of the Year Award” from the University of Notre Dame Club of Erie.

Garibaldi serves on a number of scholarly and professional boards and committees, such as the American Council on Education, Association of Governing Board’s Council of Presidents, National Association of College and University Business Officers, and Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania. He is also a past chair of the Board of Directors of both the Council of Independent Colleges and the American Association for Higher Education.  He is also a member of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ National Review Board, as well as the boards of trustees of Seton Hall University (NJ) and University of St. Thomas (MN).

“Dr. Garibaldi brings a depth and breadth of administrative experience in higher education and Catholic higher education from department chair to Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences to Provost and Chief Academic Officer to President while remaining an active scholar in his field,” stated Liz Roberts-Kirchhoff, UDM associate professor of Chemistry/Biochemistry and a faculty representative on the presidential search committee. “His past achievements demonstrate his commitment to community engagement and his ability to be both strategic and mission-centered.”

Garibaldi succeeds former UDM President Gerard L. Stockhausen, S.J, who stepped down in June to take a leadership position with the Jesuit Conference in Washington, D.C.

The Carney Latin American Solidarity Archive will host speaker Kolya Abramsky on Monday, Nov. 22 at 9 a.m. in Briggs 350 on the McNichols campus. This event is free and open to the public.

Abramsky will be speaking on "Social Struggles in the Transition to a Postpetrol World", loosely based off of his recently published book: Sparking a Worldwide Energy Revolution—Social Struggles in the Transition to a Postpetrol World. The history of the relationship between energy and technology, the current energy crisis and a transition to an alternative energy world will be covered in this speech.

In his book, Abramsky states, "The question as to how can the countries with the highest consumption of energy, especially the USA, maintain their "lifestyles" and standards of living becomes the center of attention surely pales in the face of the more confrontational question that strives to address today's enormous global energy inequalities".

Abramsky has been working within the field of alternative energy for the past six years. He has worked with the World Wind Energy Institute, promoting non-commercial renewable energy education at the Nordic Folkecenter for Renewable Energy.

The speaker has received the Manfried-Heindler Award for Energy and Climate Change Research, and has received an IAS Grant four times. Currently, he is researching the process to reach a transition to full renewable energy, and the possible social issues that may rise because of it.

12-15-miotrue1349900180215palmerscUDM Organic Chemistry Faculty Member Honored/www.udmercy.edu/news_events/news/by-year/2010/files/12-15-miopalmersc1292426505816palmersc1328561569636University of Detroit Mercy Chemistry Professor Matt Mio has recently been appointed to the American Chemical Society (ACS) Division of Chemical Education's Examinations Institute. He will help develop the next Organic Chemistry Examination for students.Honored to be selected, he explained, "I will be helping to write the 70-question national assessment exam for
undergraduates completing a year of traditionally sophomore-level organic
chemistry; this is used to gauge teaching and learning and how these criteria relate to ACS-approved bachelor's degrees nationwide."

Since 1988, the Examinations Institute has broadened its mission to include every aspect of chemistry assessment. Examinations using paper and pencil are still important parts of the program, but the Institute now sponsors the development of other tests. These include both a conceptual exam and a laboratory safety exam released in 1996. Recent additions are student study guides for the General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry exams, which have provided positive feedback among students.

Last week, Mio was also appointed to work on the Organic Chemistry section of the Dental Admissions Test (DAT) for the American Dental Association (ADA) and will begin working with the organization in the coming months. The DAT is the national entrance exam for all students pursuing a career in dental education.

The AEV Certificate at UDM provides engineers with the technical knowledge needed to be effective contributors to the development of world-class advanced electric vehicles. The curriculum emphasizes core electric and hybrid vehicle engineering expertise, such as power electronics, power flow, energy management and system architecture.

The program was launched last January in collaboration with Ford Motor Company and will graduate its first group of students this month.  In order to receive certification, students must complete five courses at the graduate level, which also can be used toward one of four UDM master’s degrees in engineering and science.

MAGMA’s goal is to ensure that the automotive industry has trained workers who can prosper in the emerging green economy. The skill development and training sponsored by MAGMA mirrors the specific knowledge and skill demands of employers in the automotive manufacturing industry. MAGMA believes that UDM’s AEV Certificate program best prepares students to learn and carry out these tasks. The organization is currently offering funds for incumbent workers to subsidize up to $1,800 per student in approved courses. More information can be found at MAGMA's web site: http://www.sae.org/training/magma/.
