UDM Organic Chemistry Faculty Member Honored

University of Detroit Mercy Chemistry Professor Matt Mio has recently been appointed to the American Chemical Society (ACS) Division of Chemical Education's Examinations Institute. He will help develop the next Organic Chemistry Examination for students.

Honored to be selected, he explained, "I will be helping to write the 70-question national assessment exam for
undergraduates completing a year of traditionally sophomore-level organic
chemistry; this is used to gauge teaching and learning and how these criteria relate to ACS-approved bachelor's degrees nationwide."

Since 1988, the Examinations Institute has broadened its mission to include every aspect of chemistry assessment. Examinations using paper and pencil are still important parts of the program, but the Institute now sponsors the development of other tests. These include both a conceptual exam and a laboratory safety exam released in 1996. Recent additions are student study guides for the General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry exams, which have provided positive feedback among students.

Last week, Mio was also appointed to work on the Organic Chemistry section of the Dental Admissions Test (DAT) for the American Dental Association (ADA) and will begin working with the organization in the coming months. The DAT is the national entrance exam for all students pursuing a career in dental education.
