Detroit Free Press Journalist Discusses Reimagining Detroit
Detroit Free Press journalist and author John Gallagher and community development expert Harriet Saperstein will speak at University of Detroit Mercy on Monday, Oct. 25 from 5 - 6:30 p.m. in the Student Center Fountain Lounge on UDM’s McNichols Campus. The lecture will focus on the future of the City, from change to revitalization.

Gallagher will also discuss his new book, Reimagining Detroit, which focuses on a newer, smaller city with big opportunities. In the book, he concentrates on the uses of vacant space for community growth and wellness, whether it is using a vacant plot of land for community gardening or putting in transit systems on too-large highways. During the lecture, Reimagining Detroit will be discussed, as well as certain changes that can be made that could lead to opportunities for a revitalization of the city. Gallaghere emphasizes, “A better future awaits Detroit.”
Gallagher grew up in both Chicago and New Jersey, graduated from DePaul and Columbia universities, and currently resides in Detroit along the east riverfront. He has been writing for the Free Press for over 23 years. Gallagher has written two other books about architecture in Michigan; Reimagining Detroit is his most recent release.
This event is sponsored by the UDM College of Liberal Arts & Education and the Student Social Work Association.
