TV Judge Jeanine Pirro Addressed Victims' Rights and Legal Issues at Law School

Hon. Jeanine Pirro, a highly respected, nationally-syndicated television court show judge, former District Attorney and County Court Judge, visited the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law on January 28, 2010. Judge Pirro honored law students with an hour-long discussion centered on her passion for victims¹ rights and her vast experience in the courtroom.

Judge Pirro was an Assistant District Attorney in Westchester County, New York, before becoming the first female judge to sit on the county court bench, and the first female District Attorney of Westchester County, serving from 1993 to 2005.

Students filled the Moot Court Room at the School of Law to hear Judge Pirro's presentation and for the opportunity to discuss current issues in the law. "It's all about victims" rights for me," she began. "That¹s my perspective on the law." Her passion for protecting victims was clear as she told stories about her time as a prosecutor and as a judge. "Victims don¹t have rights," she argued. "Criminals have rights. We've got to do something for crime victims, so we don¹t end up losing them, too."

A focus of Judge Pirro's career has been the protection of women and children in domestic violence and sexual crimes. Referencing current publicized court cases such as the Chris Brown assault and battery case and the David Letterman extortion case, Judge Pirro encouraged students to recognize that the goal of any trial should be to uncover the truth. "It's not a game," she reminded them. "You¹re developing the skills here to truly help people."

The Judge Jeanine Pirro show is broadcast locally in Detroit on WKBD/CW50 weekdays at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

The entire University of Detroit Mercy School of Law community extends it thanks to Judge Pirro for taking the time to speak with our students, and for sharing with them her perspective on the value of law and what they can do as attorneys to improve it.
