UDM Hunger Awareness Week

More than University of Detroit Mercy students are expected to participate in the University Ministry’s “National Hunger Homelessness Awareness Week” on Nov. 14-20, 2010.

“Hunger Awareness Week” was created to bring awareness to the widespread problem of hunger and homelessness both within the community and nationally. Universities and organizations across the country participate in this weeklong event with the hope of bringing a greater understanding to homelessness and to promote future involvement.

Many student organizations work together to make Hunger Awareness Week a successful event. This year’s events include:

Monday, Nov. 15:
Volunteer at Detroit Rescue Mission
Two shifts of 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Tuesday, Nov. 16:
Poetry Night in Grounds at 8 p.m.
Sponsored by AASA, Omega Psi Phi and Sweet Epiphany Detroit

Wednesday, Nov. 17:
Dodgeball Tournament in Calihan Hall at 7 p.m.
Admission: one canned good

Thursday, Nov. 18:
Candlelight Vigil at Detroit Covenant House at 6 p.m.

Friday, Nov. 19:
Volunteer at Mercy Primary Care Center
Two shifts of 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. and 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Saturday, Nov. 20:
Homeless Advocacy Walk from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m.

“Hunger Awareness Week” is an annual event one week before Thanksgiving sponsored by the National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness.
