UDM Theatre Company and Marygrove Music & Dance Present "Cabaret"
Leave your troubles outside and come to the UDM Theatre Company’s and Marygrove College Music and Dance Department’s special 7-performance production of Cabaret! Running November 12 through 21, Cabaret will be performed at the Marygrove Theatre at 8 pm on Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays and 2 pm on Sundays. “What good is sitting alone in your room? Come hear the music play!”
Join the Master of Ceremonies as he beckons you to leave your troubles outside and experience the sexy, witty and politically charged musical numbers of the Kit Kat Klub. This legendary landmark musical, set just prior to Nazi rule in 1930’s Berlin, highlights the impact of global conflicts on the lives of everyday people during one of the darkest moments in world history. Rebellious and melancholy, audacious and gleeful, Cabaret sizzles and provokes with classics such as Wilkommen, Money and Cabaret. Cabaret is recommended for mature audiences due to sexual situations and humor.
Cabaret premiered on Broadway in 1966 and in 1972 was turned into an eight-time Oscar award-winning movie starring Liza Minnelli, Michael York and Joel Grey. Later, the musical was revived on Broadway with Alan Cumming and Natasha Richardson, capturing the Tony Award. Joe Masteroff’s book for Cabaret was based on John van Druten’s play I Am a Camera, itself inspired by Christopher Isherwood’s Berlin Stories.
Susan Boonenberg and Maxwell Bolton will star as Sally Bowles and the Master of Ceremonies alongside Diane Hill (AEA) and Greg Traskoma (AEA) as Fraulein Schneider and Herr Schultz. Patrick O’Reilly (Cliff), Joel Frazee (Ernst Ludwig) and Kristen Schultes (Fraulein Kost) comprise the other principal roles. The Kit Kat Klub ensemble will feature students from both University of Detroit Mercy and Marygrove College.
Cabaret: book by Joe Masteroff, lyrics by Fred Ebb and music by John Kander. It will be directed by Greg Grobis with musical direction by Tara Sievers and choreography by Sue Panek. The creative team includes David Regal (Artistic Director), Melinda Pacha (Costume Design), Mark Choinski (Scenic Design), Kathleen Lanphear (Lighting Design) and Matthew Lira (Stage Manager).
Opening November 12 and playing a limited, two-week engagement till November 21, 2010 at the Marygrove College Theatre, Cabaret will highlight that “life is a Cabaret!” Seven performances: November 12, 13, 18, 19 and 20 at 8 pm, and November 14 and 21 at 2 pm. Thursday, November 18 will be a special pay-what-you-can performance!
