The Broadside Press Poet’s Theatre has helped promote African American literature since 1965, allowing Detroiters an outlet to express themselves through the printed word. Broadside has been able to develop many literary projects by creating new linkages with organizations such as the Detroit Public Library and the Young Writer’s Institute for Teens.
The naming of the Center after Dudley Randall reflects not only the University’s great respect for a poet and a publisher who literally transformed the face of American Literature, but also, our commitment to continuing his vision of the written word as a living art form intimately connected to community and to self-determination; as well as our commitment to continuing his vision of publishing as a vehicle for building relationships and for promoting cultural critique. Dudley Randall was a great inspiration to generations of writers, readers, and community activists.
The event is free and open to the public. Broadside Press Poets' Theater meets on UDM's McNichols Campus the third Sunday of each month. For more information, contact Rosemary Weatherston, director, Dudley Randall Center for Print Culture at weatherr@udmercy.edu.
