Not long ago, the pit bull living across the street from Diane Ross made her afraid to go outside. The 50-year-old Waterford Township resident said the dog charged at her three times this spring and was "terrorizing" her neighborhood. She was worried for the safety of her 2 1/2 -year-old grandson and tiny bichon frise. But thanks to her township's enforcement of a decades-old ban against the breed, she said she no longer has a reason for concern: A district court judge last month ordered that the dog, which lunged at her and bit others, be destroyed.

Ten Michigan nonprofit arts agencies will split up $400,000 in grants from the federal stimulus package. The grants from the National Endowment for the Arts are designed to save jobs during the recession. Grants of $50,000 each are headed to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Hall, the Flint Institute of Arts, the Irving S. Gilmore International Keyboard Festival in Kalamazoo, Michigan State University's folk and traditional arts program, the Mosaic Youth Theater of Detroit and the University of Detroit Mercy's design program.

McCallum is the head coach at the University of Detroit Mercy and Zeigler the head coach at Central Michigan. Their sons, Ray McCallum Jr. and Trey Zeigler, are best friends, teammates on Team Detroit's travel ball squad and being recruited by some of the top programs in the nation.
