Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina

Did you know that you can re-roof a trailer? We didn't think so either, but that was the major project of our 2008 spring break service trip to South Carolina, Huger (pronounced HU-gee) to be exact. Under the direction of the United Methodist Relief Center, we worked on Miss Carrie's rusty blue-grey trailer, covering the leaking roof with "hydrostop", caulking, fixing her bedroom ceiling putting up new soffits, replacing the lattice around the trailer's base, and painting the shutters white and trailer a wisteria violet color. In three and a half days we gave the owner a "new home." Eleven of us learned a number of new construction skills, including the fact that you can't paint wet metal with latex paint!

It wasn't all work. As a matter of fact, because we were rained out a day and a half, we probably had more free time than ever, and got to experience the Atlantic up close and personal at about 55 degrees.
