Anthony, New Mexico

group

The new site for 2008 was a Border Awareness Experience sponsored by the Women's Intercultural Center in Anthony, New Mexico, near El Paso, Texas.  Students who participated learned about border issues and their complexities. Initially, students spent two days with host families in a colonia, a neighborhood along the border, on the outskirts of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, across from El Paso.  Students had an opportunity to visit a women's center and chat with the women about their lives along the border.  The students also assisted the women in making herbal remedies.

In El Paso, Texas, our delegation visited various agencies that assist undocumented people.  For service work, students served in Tierra Madre (Mother Earth), an intercultural and sustainable community in New Mexico, where approximately 25-30 homes have been built for low income families; approximately 40 houses are to be built.  We assisted in insulating one home with bales of hay – straw bale home construction, and applying tar paper on outside wooden beams.  For students to have a more full experience, it is suggested that participants be able to speak Spanish at an intermediate level. There is a maximum of 6 student participants.
