Additional Information about the Institute

The University of Detroit Mercy seeks to provide students with a rigorous, person-centered education which takes seriously our situation in a metropolis rich in diversity, yet fragmented in many ways. In order to help heal this fragmentation, and to at least maintain, if not improve, the quality of life in the Detroit metropolitan region, the Institute for Building Sustainable Communities seeks to foster the concept of sustainable community development as an integral part of education at UDM.

There already exist many programs at the University which afford students the opportunity to analyze, and in some cases to participate in, efforts to strengthen the fabric of modern life in this metropolis. The Institute will strive to facilitate communication and coordination among these programs, and will try to aid in developing further classes along these lines, especially classes involving students in hands-on experiences in the city. The Institute will also facilitate workshops on sustainability topics.

Those involved in the Institute would certainly welcome your ideas regarding integrating sustainable community development into the educational effort at UDM. The Director of the Institute is Dr. Michael Whitty, who can be reached at 248-594-7596, whittymd@udmercy.edu.

We would very much like to receive any suggestions you have regarding the Institute. Please e-mail whittymd@udmercy.edu, or call 248-594-7596.
