Assessment Team: Operational Policies and Procedures

I.  REPORTING LINE:  Team report to the Vice President for Academic Affairs

When formal recommendations are made to the Vice President for Academic Affairs (AVP), the Vice President will inform the team of his/her decision or reaction to the proposal within 60 days.  If the Vice President decides to take a course of action different from that recommended by the team, the Vice President will make him/herself available to explain to the team the reason for the contrary action.

II. Team Membership

A.    One representative of the School of Law
B.    One representative of the School of Dentistry
C.    One representative from each of the colleges/schools (selected by the college/school)
D.    One representative from the Libraries that report to the Dean of University Libraries
E.    One faculty member selected by the MFA from its members
F.    Two administrative representatives appointed by the AVP

III. Structure

A.    Chairperson

1.    Chairperson will be chosen by the Team membership on an annual basis
2.    Call meetings for the Team
3.    Conducts meetings for the Team
4.    Provides notification of a meeting at least ten days prior to the meeting
5.    Develops meeting agendas for distribution at least five days before the scheduled meeting
6.    Provide the Team with issues identified by the AVP
7.    Provide recommendations and other actions to timelines established by the AVP
8.    At the end of each academic year, the Team will evaluate its progress toward achievement of established goals in an annual report for the AVP

B.    Secretary

1.    Takes minutes of Team meetings
2.    Abbreviates meeting minutes to one page for the University Archives within one week of meeting
3.    Posts summary minutes and other documents online within one week of meeting (shared governance website)
4.    Reports Team activities to Campus Connection as appropriate
5.    Maintains roster of Team current membership

IV. Procedures

A. Team will meet at least once per month during the academic year and during the summer as needed
B.  A quorum shall consist of a majority of members for a meeting, consensus, or vote to take place
C.  Meetings will operate under the principle of consensus unless a vote is requested

V.  DUTIES

A.    Establish, in consultation with the AVP, goals for the academic year
B.    At the end of each academic year, the team will evaluate its progress toward achievement of established goals in an annual report to the AVP
C.    Share best practices around the university regarding assessment
D.    Review the assessment methodologies being used by each college/school and department/program
E.    Identify those departments/programs in which assessment activities require improvement, and suggest ways to improve
F.    Interact with the Core Curriculum Committee/Task Force regarding assessment of the Core objectives
G.    Recommend assessment policy and, at the request of the AVP, implement proposed assessment activities
H.    Maintain an ongoing awareness in the university community of the importance of assessment through workshops and other activities
I.    Provide the AVP with recommendations regarding assessment activities
