The 40,000 square-foot facility will be completed in two phases. The first phase will have a gym with two courts, an elevated three-lane track, men’s and women’s locker rooms, a large group exercise room, a weight lifting room and two rooms for cardiovascular workouts, each with a full range of equipment.

The second phase will be added at a later time once additional funds have been raised. Phase II of the project will encompass an eight-lane pool for competitive meets and recreational swimming with bleacher seating for 250, a concessions area, team locker rooms, additional offices and an alumni board room.

Located on the east side of the Engineering Building, the Student Fitness Center will face the Lillie B. Kassab Mall. It is just a short walk to the new tennis courts, practice fields and Calihan Hall as well as the residence halls.

The brick building features a spacious lobby, large span of windows, vaulted ceilings and easy access. It complements the architecture of the campus’ classic buildings as designed by TMP Architecture and Peter Basso Associates, Inc.  When Phase I opens in fall 2012, students will be able to work out on campus without having to drive to an off-site fitness center.

Phase I funding is in place; fundraising is under way to complete Phase II, with naming opportunities available. For more information, please contact Vice President for University Advancement Gregory Cascione at 313-993-1250 or
