Digital Media Studies Course Overview

Digital Media Studies students take a range of courses, from New Media Theory to Video Game Design, which are offered in a variety of departments. Course projects may range from designing flipbooks, interfaces and websites to abstract videos examining marginalized issues within society.

The curriculum is designed to inspire students to combine their unique perspectives on digital culture with design and technology. The links below lead to course examples taught by faculty within the Digital Media Studies as well as the School of Architecture and the College of Liberal Arts and Education.

Digital Media Studies Curriculum

The Digital Media curriculum is currently under revision, but will be in place by the fall of 2006. The outline of courses below, in addition to the UDM Core Curriculum, represents the proposed course of study for Digital Media majors.

Digital Media Core - 12 Credits

All Digital Media majors must take the four courses outlined below.

Digital Media Studio - 12 Credits

Complete four semesters of studio work. One of those semesters can be completed as an independent study (E-Crit 495).

Select five courses in Design and/or Programming from the list below, with at least two at the 300 or 400 level. The list is not comprehensive, and students may consult the program director for course alternatives.

Liberal Arts "Minor" - 18 credits

Digital Media majors must complete at least 18 credits in one of the departments in the College of Liberal Arts. At least 9 credit hours must be completed at the 300 or 400 level.

As an alternative, students may pursue a certificate program in Women's Studies, African American Studies, Catholic Studies or Business Administration.

Digital Media Portfolio - 3 credits

All Digital Media students are required to complete an extensive web, CD, or DVD portfolio of their work in their final term of study.
