A job shadow/mentorship program
Target: Freshmen and Sophomore levels in non-required cooperative education programs at University of Detroit Mercy.
Purpose: This program encourages students to explore possible career fields and to establish future networking possibilities.
Goal: The goal of the program is for students to gain an understanding of a business, industry, and/or job function, to ask questions, and to observe day to day business operations.
Students will be matched with employer volunteers
2013-14 externship opportunities include:
- Northwestern Mutual,
- Ford Motor Company (Finance),
- Detroit Historical Society,
- Quicken Loans,
- University of Detroit Mercy Athletic Department,
- Chrysler Group LLC (Finance & Purchasing),
- Fastenal, and
- Argent International.

What is an Externship? Externships or job shadowing are shorter in duration than an internship. Externships may consist of a one day to three day visti to an employer's office. This offers participants a bird’s eye view of what it’s really like working in a particular career field.
What will a typical externship look like? The time spent at a volunteer organization may take many forms. Participants may spend the day:
- asking questions,
- attending meetings,
- tour the organization
- and meet with people working in other offices or departments.
When will the externship take place? Externships will typically take place during spring break and is a great way to learn more about careers and meet professionals currently working in the field.
Will I have to apply to participate in the Mentor A Titan Program? Students interested should plan to meet with Tracy Hrabovsky, CEC Peer Mentor to learn more about the process to participate.
