TRE 131. 3 cr.
Introduction to the Theatre
An examination of theatre as a complex and living art form from the perspectives of writer, interpretive artists, and audience. This is a non-performance course which exposes students to the components of theatrical production as a means of cultural expression.

TRE 132. 1-4 cr.
Rehearsal and Production
Supervised laboratory experience coordinated with University productions. This course is for freshmen and sophomores only and may be repeated for a total of 4 cr.

TRE 161. 3 cr.
Fundamentals of Acting
An introductory survey of the crafts of acting. The course focuses on fundamental work in improvisation, developing the body as an instrument, and theatre speech and diction. It is required for all majors; recommended for non-majors.

TRE 266. 3 cr.
Elements of Theatre Crafts
Lecture and laboratory course in techniques of stage craft: backstage organization, theatre terminology, construction techniques, scene painting, lighting principles, and use of special materials for fabrication of scenery and properties. It is required for all majors; recommended for non-majors.

TRE 268. 3 cr.
Acting II
An introduction to the acting process which focuses on developing a method for actors to begin to analyze character. Through exercises and scene work the actor begins to name goals, uncover tactics, relate to other characters and achieve stated expectations. This is a more in-depth consideration of the fundamentals of acting applied to scenes.

TRE 310. 3 cr.
Scenic Design
Prerequisite: Approval of Instructor
A study of the methods and purposes of theatrical scenic design. This course explores the philosophical and collaborative nature of the scenic designers work through specific design projects which emphasize analysis and visual interpretation of the written script.

TRE 350, 355, 450, 455. 3 cr.
Scene Study BFA
Prerequisite: Audition into BFA or permission of chair.
An exploration of selected topics in the advanced development of the actor’s process, business and instrument. Each semester is devoted to one of the following: imagination and creativity which uncovers emotional blocks and connects right-brain/left-brain activities; advanced process work using plays from modern drama; auditioning techniques and the business of being an actor; and scene study of the plays of Shakespeare through the work of John Barton.

TRE 351, 356, 451, 456. 3 cr.
Acting Dynamics BFA
Prerequisite: Audition into BFA or permission of chair.
Four semesters of advanced acting training with scene work focusing on the acting student’s individual and unique qualities, both positive and negative. The emphasis is on contemporary plays. Analyses and critiques are provided by the instructor and the class.

Acting Styles BFA
Prerequisite: Audition into BFA or permission of chair.
Four semesters of advanced acting techniques, emphasizing styles of movement and speech demanded by classical and period plays.

TRE 459. 3 cr.
Voice and Diction BFA
Prerequisite: Audition into BFA or permission of chair.
An intensive study of all elements related to the actor’s vocal instrument: voice and body. Semester one, taken during the sophomore year, focuses on movement: games and improvisation; clown technique; stage combat; and basic dance elements. Geared to improve actor grace, posture, walk, alignment, balance, endurance, flexibility and musicality. Semesters two and three focus on voice production and articulation through a modified Linklater system. The fourth semester (3 cr.) focuses on acquiring proficiency in dialects.

Rehearsal and Production II
Supervised laboratory experience in positions of responsibility. This course is offered to juniors and seniors only and may be repeated for a total of 4 cr.

TRE 430. 3 cr.
Theatre History I
Prerequisite: Junior standing and permission of instructor.
Study of the development of theatre from the Greeks through French neoclassicism; plays, their authors, historical methods and styles of staging, and their significance in the history of culture. This course is required of theatre majors, recommended for literature and history majors.

TRE 431. 3 cr.
Theatre History II
Prerequisite: Junior standing and permission of instructor.
Study of the development of theatre in the western world from the Restoration through contemporary trends; plays, their authors, historical methods and styles of staging, and their significance in the history of culture. This course is required for BFA majors, recommended for literature and history majors.

TRE 465. 3 cr.
Fundamentals of Directing
Prerequisite: Junior standing and permission of instructor.
Study of the basic principles of staging: geography of the stage, dramatic analysis, use of floor plan and set, principles of visual and temporal composition, planning rehearsals, and working with actors. The course involves extensive demonstration and experience in scene work, culminating in a series of student directed one-acts.

TRE 467. 3 cr.
Methods of Teaching High School Dramatics
Preparation of lesson plans, course work, and a major production project. This course is designed for BA majors seeking certification in Secondary teaching and can be taken by arrangement only.

TRE 468. 3 cr.
Methods of Play Production
Prerequisite: Senior standing and permission of instructor. A survey of the problems of dramatic production with emphasis on pre-production organization, crews, casting, theatre management, publicity and promotion. This course is designed for BA majors, directing majors and can be taken by arrangement only.
