Description

This certificate program intends to rapidly infuse important advanced electric vehicle (AEV) knowledge and capabilities into the technological team of the automotive and defense ground vehicle industries of the region. It is aimed at specific learning outcomes defined in direct collaboration with leaders in AEV development at the Ford Motor Company. Input from a variety of Industry and Academic sources is being used to continuously refresh the information and technologies discussed for this rapidly evolving drivetrain system.  Students successful in these courses will learn to apply their engineering talents to the development of the next generation of advanced electric vehicles.

Engineers in this program will select five of the seven newly created graduate courses that were designed by "competency teams," whose explicit purpose is to create curriculum that is directly responsive to industry needs, but also deploys the most current technology, strategies, methods and tools emerging from universities, corporations and national laboratories. The certificate program is offered in two locations, currently -Rotunda Campus, Dearborn Mi and UDM McNichols Campus, Detroit, MI.

Students may choose to concentrate several courses in one focal area or may select a variety of courses across multiple focal areas.

Advanced Electric Vehicle Certificate Requirements

This is a 15 credit (5 course) certificate program. Nine credits (3 courses) are required core courses, and 6 credits (2 courses) are electives which may be chosen from the list below.  Students must maintain a gpa above 3.0.  Grades below "C" will not advance a student towards graduation.

Required Courses (9 credit hours)

AEV 5010 Intro To Advanced Electric Vehicles 3 cr.
AEV 5020 Controls Modeling & Design for AEV 3 cr.
AEV 5050 E-Drives 3 cr.



Elective courses (choose 2 courses - 6 credit hours)

AEV 5030 Energy Storage 3 cr.
AEV 5040 Power Electronics 3 cr.
AEV 5060 Innovation and System Architecture 3 cr.
AEV 5070 Systems Engineering 3 cr.



Students wishing to specialize in a particular focal area should choose their elective courses to reflect the desired focus.

Systems Specialization

Energy Storage and Electronics Specialization

AEV 5030 Energy Storage 3 cr.
