Pope Francis named Person of the Year
On Dec. 11, the editors of Time Magazine named Pope Francis as their Person of the Year. As he is the first Jesuit Pope, other Jesuits and administrators at Jesuit institutions around the country have been featured in the media commenting on the news.

Homecoming, Jan. 11
Join with other fans of Detroit Titans basketball for Homecoming 2014 on Saturday, Jan. 11! Festivities begin at 2 p.m. when the Titans women's team hosts the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies and don't conclude until after the Titans men's team takes on the Grizzlies at 7 p.m.
All faculty, staff and alumni are invited to Mass on Homecoming Day at 4 p.m. in the Commerce & Finance Building's St. Ignatius Chapel, and to the Alumni Tailgate party beginning at 5 p.m. in the Engineering Building High Bay. The admission price for the Tailgate includes family fun, food, beverages and a vote in the Alumni Chili Cook-off. Faculty and staff honored
At the Dec. 13 Employee Christmas Party and Colleague Recognition Celebration, many of our UDM coworkers were honored for their years of service to the University. See the 2013 years of service list (PDF). Also, the recipients of the three Commitment to Excellence Awards were named: Associate Vice President & University Registrar Diane Praet (Administrator award), Secretary for the Biology Department Mary Jackman (Staff award) and Assistant Director for Residence Life Trevor Mannausa (Rising Star award).
Snow day? Register for UDM's emergency alert system
With winter upon us, make sure to register for UDM's emergency alert system (EAS) to make sure you receive timely alerts on class cancellations or other emergency notices via your mobile phone, landline phone or email. To register, go to the Rave Mobile Safety site, and sign in with your TitanConnect user name and password. Follow the site's instructions to confirm or modify your contact information. You can also perform a test to make sure you receive system notices.

In the Chemistry & Biochemistry Department, Professor Mark Benvenuto and students Andrew Diefenbach, Witold Fuchs, Tim Gornall, Shelby Maurice, Clint Mikek, Mitch Sable, Tom Wakerly and Ben West cowrote the article, "The thermite demonstration revisited: A dramatic, yet safe combustion," which was published in the fall 2013 issue of the journal of the Michigan Science Teachers Association, MSTA Journal.
Assistant Dean of the Career Education Center Elissa Clemons coordinated the annual holiday networking event for the Michigan Career Educator and Employer Alliance, held Dec. 12 in Southfield, Mich. Clemons also gave a presentation at the event on state trends related to recruitment of post-secondary students through internship and full-time employment.
Justin Kelly, S.J., associate professor of Religious Studies, gave the presentation, "Pride and Prejudice at 200: Why Austen's classic is still so good," at the Grosse Pointe (Mich.) Library, Dec. 11.
