Ultimate Liquid Nitrogen Pong event, Dec. 7
The UDM Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry invites everyone to the Engineering Building High Bay, Friday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. for "Ultimate Liquid Nitrogen Pong," where you can try to catch one of 1,500 ping pong balls, which they plan to blast into the air with a chemical explosion. The demonstration includes a chance to win cash prizes by catching special ping pong balls. Plastic cups, for catching the balls, will be sold for one dollar apiece. Catch the golden ball, and you'll win $100!
School of Law celebrates new home for legal clinics, Dec. 11
The UDM School of Law will officially dedicate the George J. Asher Law Clinic Center on Tuesday, Dec. 11 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception. The new Center, located in the renovated, historic Detroit Engine Two firehouse near the School, is the new home for 10 of the renowned pro bono clinics the School supports. Christmas Party and Employee Recognition Celebration, Dec. 14
Remember that the 2012 Christmas Party and Employee Recognition Celebration will be held Friday, Dec. 14 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the new Student Fitness Center. UDM employees are invited to come celebrate the season and our fellow employees for their years of service and their commitment to excellence.
50 years ago: Robert Frost at UDM
On Nov. 14, 1962, celebrated poet Robert Frost, then 88, came to the University to read some of his poetry for more than 8,000 who had gathered in and around the University's Memorial Building (renamed Calihan Hall in 1977). UDM signs agreement with WCCCD for classes on east side
A memorandum of understanding signed last month by UDM and Wayne County Community College District (WCCCD) will enable students on the east side of Detroit to earn advanced degrees close to home. Classes in finance, education, health care and mathematics will be available at the WCCCD site. See the UDM story for more.
WXYZ-TV features Student Fitness Center
On Nov. 27, WXYZ-TV Channel 7 Action News featured a story about the new Student Fitness Center at University of Detroit Mercy. The piece by Dave LewAllen includes interviews with student Nora Abolins and UDM President Antoine Garibaldi. Watch the segment on the UDM YouTube channel.
Professor of Business Administration Michael Bernacchi appeared on a "Money Works" segment of Fox 2 News on Nov. 27. The interview with Bernacchi focused on trends and patterns of holiday shopping. You can watch the segment on MyFoxDetroit.com.
Assistant Professor of Computer & Information Systems Rita Barrios authored the article, "Intrusion detection for the database: Detecting the insider threat," which will be presented at the seventh International Conference on Digital Society (ICDS 2013) in February 2013 in Nice, France.
Associate Professor of Biology James Graves gave a lecture on encephalitis viruses and poliovirus for 22 University of Detroit Jesuit High School science students accompanied by teacher Dominic Coccitti, in order to assist the students in selecting a university, Nov. 20.
Assistant Professor of Education Jiawen Wang recently co-authored two articles: "Asian American families," published in Encyclopedia of Diversity in Education (SAGE Publications), and "Human behavior in chatrooms," in Encyclopedia of Cyber Behavior (IGI Global).
