Mercy Foundation Day, Dec. 12
December 12, 2011 marks the 180th anniversary of the founding of the Sisters of Mercy — the day Catherine McAuley founded the religious congregation to serve the sick poor and to educate young women. Today, the Sisters of Mercy are well known for their leadership in health care, education and other social service work.
In the U.S., the Sisters of Mercy sponsor 16 universities and colleges, including University of Detroit Mercy, which is co-sponsored by the Society of Jesus. This network of universities/colleges form the Conference for Mercy Higher Education, which recently created a brief video to highlight the characteristics of a Mercy-sponsored university/college.
